About the property

1 bedroom, 1 bath, two-story house on small lake, large lot with shade trees

Our home is located in the Greater Pinellas Point neighborhood of St. Petersburg which is Exit 16 off of I-275 before the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. We are 1 block from the bay, only 2 minutes from the interstate, 10 minutes to downtown St. Petersburg, and 15-20 minutes to Ft. Desoto beaches and St. Pete Beach. Our architecturally unique home is called a bird cage home because it was built with the main living areas on the second floor and has a 40 ft. long lanai which allows for the enjoyment of outdoor living. The back yard slopes down to a small lake and has mature oak, mango, and palm trees. You can bird watch right from the porch, or just relax, read a book, or enjoy a meal at the bistro table while taking in the view and the fresh air. This 1 bedroom, 1 bath home features a remodeled kitchen with granite counter tops, wood cabinets, stainless steel French Door

refrigerator, and dishwasher. There is a microwave, convection oven, toaster oven, blender, coffee maker, George Foreman Grill, dishes, mugs, glasses, cooking utensils. Basic staples include spices, oil & vinegar, pasta, instant oatmeal, cereal, sugar, coffee, tea, etc. Downstairs features a smaller sitting area and an additional dining table. Just outside the back door is a sandstone patio with two Adirondack chairs, a chiminea (terracotta outdoor fireplace), and a gas grill that is ready to fire up.

About Joanne

We are both originally from New York and moved to Florida from Connecticut 30 years ago to be closer to my parents. We were also tired of the ice and snow and wanted to move to paradise! We enjoy kayaking, bicycling, rollerblading, tennis, and walking in the many nature parks in Pinellas County.

Joanne purchased this house in 1999

Why Joanne chose Pinellas Point

After living in Gulfport, FL for 11 years, we wanted a more private setting and found this peaceful, park-like property and have lived here for 18 years. We fell in love with all the trees, the privacy, and all the wildlife/birds that come to visit the lake and our yard. We love that we are 1 block away from Bay Vista waterfront park and community center, and only 7 blocks away from Lake Vista park and community center which has tennis courts, a walking trail, and a fitness course. Also, we love hiking at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve which is a short drive away. Downtown St. Petersburg and all it has to offer is only a 10-minute drive away. There is so much to see and do! You can choose to stay busy or stay put and enjoy the serenity of the house and yard.

What makes this house unique

We fell in love with this property because of its park-like setting and the unique design of the house. We love observing nature and our yard attracts wildlife/water birds/migratory birds because of its proximity to the lake/green space. We keep it in a semi-natural state and do not use any chemicals in our yard. We try to plant only Florida native plants so that they provide food for the wildlife. We keep a birdbath in one of our landscaped beds to attract birds looking for a cool bath or a drink of water. We fell in love with the 40 ft. long lanai that is perfect for enjoying the delightful breezes coming from the bay. Also, the house gets a lot of natural light during the day and when the sun starts to set, the light that it casts in the house is delightful. We hope you will love our home as much as we do!

Quiet, relaxing home in a great location

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and our small dog recently stayed in this lovely home. The yard looking out at the small lake and the "birdcage" porch were very relaxing. Joanne was welcoming and helpful. The house had everything a guest could imagine needing, including a first aid kit and sewing kit. Everything was clean and comfortable. The location is wonderful: in a quiet neighborhood, just blocks from a small park that looks out on Tampa Bay, but just a 20-min. drive to downtown St. Pete. We would highly recommend staying at this property.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your wonderful review. I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay, the views from the porch, and the proximity to downtown St. Petersburg. I try to put myself in my guests' position and imagine everything I would want in a vacation rental. Making sure my home is cozy, comfortable, and very clean, are my top priorities. Thank you again for choosing my bird cage home and I hope you will come visit in the future!

Great host, authentic Florida home

  • 5 of 5

We came across this rental a couple of weeks after Hurricane Irma, literally at the very last minute before our intended stay. After giving the owner some personal information, she showed a lot of understanding for our situation. We were traveling with our two young sons and she quickly agreed to have us stay at her home. Subsequently she also showed a great deal of flexibility with financial aspects as well as check-in and check-out times. She was always very responsive, pleasantly unassuming and exceptionally helpful and friendly. Most importantly, she gave special attention to our children and provided numerous toys, books and activities for them. She even made arrangements for a day at a public pool where she made sure that the boys had lots of entertainment, giving us time to relax. Her warm, welcoming attitude made us feel like family on many occasions.

The property itself is a gem. If you would like to experience an authentic Florida home, look no further! It's a moderate-size, cozy house with a spacious interior. And, unlike many other older homes, this one is BRIGHT. The numerous windows provide an abundance of light and unobstructed views which has such a positive effect. And of course there is the "cage" side that gets all the morning sunlight. Only 1 BR is accessible to guests, but Joanne provided an air mattress for our boys. The furniture is clean and comfortable. It is located in a calm neighborhood, on a scenic pond, and has a picturesque yard with mature trees and landscaping. Also, this house, along with several other birdcage houses in the neighborhood, is in the process of being considered for historic designation.

We wish Joanne good luck with her vacation-rental business and will definitely come back some day!

Great place!! Great hostess!!

  • 5 of 5

The house was beautiful and very homey. Joanne went above and beyond to make sure we were well taken care of. This was the first time i had ever used vrbo and I was extremely happy with the place where we stayed. My family and I were able to go to some nearby parks and my husband and son went kayaking for the first time. They thoroughly enjoyed it. Even though it was hot we still had a great time. I would definitely recommend staying here!! Very beautiful house and a great hostess!!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much, Laura! You and your family were such a pleasure to host and you took such good care of my home. I'm so happy that I was able to make your first experience with VRBO an enjoyable one. And, I'm so glad that your husband and son got to experience kayaking! I loved that you asked so many questions before you booked. This really helped both of us to feel confident that the house was the right fit for your vacation needs. I sure hope you will come and stay at the Bird Cage again. Enjoy the rest of your summer! Joanne

Excellent property for 2-3 people

  • 5 of 5

I am a very picky individual when it comes to any vacation accommodations. You won't regret renting Joanne's home and at a very reasonable price. The one bedroom home is absolutely wonderful. Cute, comfortable, immaculate, homey and a great location to beaches. Joanne is wonderful and very accommodating. Don't hesitate on this one.
