About Ruth Nisco and Scott Lowry

Scott and Ruth met 2 years ago thru an online dating site and have been together ever since. They discovered that they shared the dream of getting out of the rat race and settling somewhere out of the city. Scott and Ruth love getting creative in the outdoors; gardening, animals, photography, trail blazing, and the idea of creating a homestead are some of their passions.

Scott is a native Washingtonian and graduate of UW. He worked many years at Boeing in Washington and Arizona, he has also been a firefighter, a scuba diver, and the best barista ever! Scott enjoys his current job at Taylor Shellfish, where he gets to go out on a boat everyday, farming oysters. Scott is also one of the biggest Seahawks fans on the planet! Ruth was born in Hawaii and also lived in Washington D.C., but most of her life has been in the Seattle area. She does prefer the sunny life of Hawaii, but has become enchanted with the rainy forest of Harstine Island! Ruth recently graduated with a degree in graphic design and finds her new life on the island inspirational.

Why Ruth Nisco and Scott Lowry chose Shelton

Last summer Ruth & Scott started looking for some property to purchase away from the big city of Seattle. Their search lead them to the little known island called Harstine. They booked a weekend at the Huckleberry House, then owned by Jim and Wilma. It was love at first site and to their amazement, Jim and Wilma Neal were looking to sell! The Neal's were hoping to find someone who loved and appreciated the property and who also would keep the VRBO cabin going.

After renting the main house and managing the cabin for them for the last six months, Ruth & Scott have been able to purchase the property and are now the proud owners of the Huckleberry cabin.

Ruth and Scott enjoy sharing their beautiful piece of earth with others, and hope that everyone who visits the Huckleberry House feels the magic too!

What makes this cabin unique

Peaceful, serene, lush, green, mystical maple trees, mossy fairy trails, quiet beach, campfires, best oysters and shellfish in the world, Huckleberry Creek, deer, birds, cozy homey cabin, relaxing hot tub in charming garden, signature zucchini+apple bread,

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for the wonderful tidiness left in the cabin and the treehouse. It was delightful to hear that the girls enjoyed their sleeping quarters up near the birds.

Great "Mom Getaway"

  • 5 of 5

Ruth and Scott bought this property recently after having stayed at Huckleberry House themselves as guests! I don't know if they've changed anything from the way it was with the previous owners, but Huckleberry was bigger and more "put together" than I'd thought from the pictures. Ruth gave me the tour, including a walk-though of the treasures inside the Guest Book -- this thing has everything! From a map of the trails on their property, to picture-based instructions for finding the 'secret' beach, to foolproof how-to's for using the many remotes. The ONLY place I've stayed that tells you how to use the remotes! Between the microwave and the toaster/convection oven you could cook whatever your heart desires! Uh, just don't try to use them at the same time or it throws the circuit on the power strip -- oops! Speaking of which...I can verify the smoke detector works and is sensitive to use of the convection oven, but a few flaps of a towel in front of it got things quiet again :) Bring your own food, but granola bars, coffee, tea, instant oatmeal, and homemade apple zucchini bread were provided. The TV has DISH, Pandora, and Netflix, plus a small library of DVDs to choose from. Beautiful whimsical trails on the property with a few playful surprises if you're looking closely. I can only imagine it's even nicer in the summer. Mature landscaping makes tea on the little porch a delight. It was just me and my mountain dog and there was ample room for the two of us. This cabin could sleep up to 4 adults + 2 children in the loft, but you'd have a hard time finding space for everyone to sit for meals so you may want to plan to eat in town if you're a party of 6 (or picnic on the floor if you're feeling young at heart). A heater in each room kept the temperature cozy, though with the big down comforter on the bed I didn't need the heater! It was a treat to soak in the full bathtub in the morning, then take a dip in the hot tub that evening (you'll find flip flops in the closet for getting you there and back). I didn't venture up into the treehouse myself, but plan to return with my kiddos to test it out. Thank you Ruth and Scott!

Just what we needed! Home away from home, great nature walks and the wild felid advocacy center was so much fun! And the hot tub was so relaxing.

Wonderful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

House, kitchen was way better stocked then I had anticipated! lots of dishes for eating and cooking.

Hostes was AMAZING! We felt very welcomed. I love the additional little touches of fresh greenery in the vases. Also, my son LOVED Timber the cat he said his favorite part of the trip was his hike in the woods with the hostess and Timber.

We will definitely consider staying again. Thank You!

Great little cabin

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed our stay at huckleberry house. Great little beach, lots of trails right by cabin. Great host Ruth greated us on arrival showed us around made sure we knew where things were, had apple zucchini bread waiting for us in cabin really good. Will definitely come again when weather warms up, a little cold outside for fire pit but would love it in spring or fall.
