About Ruth Nisco and Scott Lowry

Scott and Ruth met in 2015 thru an online dating site and have been together ever since. They discovered that they shared the dream of getting out of the rat race and settling somewhere out of the city. Scott and Ruth love getting creative in the outdoors; gardening, animals, photography, trail blazing, and the idea of creating a homestead are some of their passions.

Scott is a native Washingtonian and graduate of UW. He worked many years at Boeing in Washington and Arizona, he has also been a firefighter, a scuba diver, and the best barista ever! Scott is also one of the biggest Seahawks fans on the planet! Ruth was born in Hawaii and also lived in Washington D.C., but most of her life has been in the Seattle area. She does prefer the sunny life of Hawaii, but has become enchanted with the rainy forest of Harstine Island! Ruth recently graduated with a degree in graphic design and finds her new life on the island inspirational.

Ruth Nisco and Scott Lowry purchased this cabin in 2017

Why Ruth Nisco and Scott Lowry chose Shelton

The summer of 2016 Ruth & Scott started looking for some property to purchase away from the big city of Seattle. Their search lead them to the little known island called Harstine. They booked a weekend at the Huckleberry House, then owned by Jim and Wilma. It was love at first site and to their amazement, Jim and Wilma were looking to sell! They were hoping to find someone who loved and appreciated the property and who also would keep the VRBO cabin going.

After renting the main house and managing the cabin for them for the last six months, Ruth & Scott have been able to purchase the property and are now the proud owners of the Huckleberry Cabin and Trails.

Ruth and Scott enjoy sharing their beautiful piece of earth with others, and hope that everyone who visits the Huckleberry Cabin feels the magic too!

What makes this cabin unique

Peaceful, serene, lush, green, mystical maple trees, mossy fairy trails, quiet beach, campfires, best oysters and shellfish in the world, woodland wildlife, cozy homey cabin, relaxing hot tub in charming garden, signature zucchini+apple bread, Pet friendly

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for the wonderful tidiness left in the cabin and the treehouse. It was delightful to hear that the girls enjoyed their sleeping quarters up near the birds.

Fantastic Place!

  • 5 of 5

I took my girls (age 14 and 10) for a couple nights and we had a terrific time. This is a perfect cabin with wonderful decor and comforts. The forest area surrounding the cabin is absolutely beautiful. Many paths to walk, frogs to find, hammocks to relax (and play) in. Will definitely be coming back to see the forest during different seasons. Highly recommend!

Huckleberry House

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I loved out stay in the Huckleberry House. Ruth greeted us and provided great recommendations and information about the property and area. She & Scott were gracious hosts. Parking was easy, the cabin is very comfortable, the hot tub was amazing, the scenery unmatched, and the animals friendly. My wife fell in love with Timber. We drove into Shelton the first night for dinner, then explored Olympia the second day, before returning and visiting the beach on the island and the state parks. Of the places we have been, this rated #1. We hated to leave, but will definitely return. I would recommend the Huckleberry House to everyone interested in Washington state!

Cozy cabin in the woods on Harstine Island

  • 5 of 5

Ruth and Scott's cozy cabin had everything I needed! I was greeted by Ruth and on the counter was a small loaf of zucchini and apple bread baked by Scott! It was such a welcoming touch! The cabin is adjacent to their house, but there was enough distance for me. The porch of the cabin has a couple of chairs to sit outside to read or have a cup of tea or coffee and it's fairly hidden by shrubs. The kitchen has a two burner stove top, small fridge, and microwave. The bedroom has a queen size bed which was very comfortable and the living area has a fold out futon couch that could sleep another person. The trails around their property take you down to the road and is just a short distance to a picnic area with fire pit, picnic table and two Adirondack chairs and a wonderful view of the water. The cabin is located on Harstine Island which is in southern Puget Sound and close to Olympia, WA. I cooked my meals, but if you wanted to dine out, Shelton and Allyn are off the island, but not far away. Since most of the shore line is private, I took advantage of Harstine Island State Park and Jarrell Cove State Park and spent the day hiking and sitting on the beach. Another day my dog and I discovered Fudge Point State Park which has no facilities but has a lovely stretch of beach. I appreciated finding a wonderful place that allowed a dog! Many thanks to Ruth and Scott and I hope to come again. They also have a hot tub at the main house, which guests can use. Would highly recommend their cabin! Beverly Wong

Most completely furnished, cozy, whimsical, super bed, paths through surrounding "woods" with gnomes.

  • 5 of 5

This Huckleberry House is perfect for romantic getaways, anniversary celebrations, even for families with planned accommodations for children in the sleeping loft. There is a tree house and hiking trails through the woods with resident gnome guardians.

Super clean and organized: practical/compact - with all amenities in the kitchen and full bath. solid construction, cozy and quaint with whimsy (mi casa/su casa). Even a linen storage closet-towels and flip flops specific for the hot tub, romantically set in a mini-arbor with atmosphere lights.

Nature decor throughout this super solid construction.

Super private and a lovely sun deck.

Oh! Can't forget the delightful, perfect, home-baked zucchini, carrot, coconut bread loaf, absolutely dee-lish!

Above and beyond, in all respects.
