Hi!- We are Les and Sue Milner, the owners of Haus Bergheim. We previously lived in Leicestershire, England and after many years of wonderful holidays in Austria we finally achieved our dream of buying a property and settling in this beautiful part of the world.
We have spent a year renovating Haus Bergheim, creating two seperate apartments, and are now delighted to be able to share our 'mountain home' with guests who can also enjoy the peaceful ambience of lakes and forests, the spectacular mountain landscape and the unique, traditional Austrian welcome.
We love the range of outdoor activities that are available to us here. We are both very keen skiers and chose this location because we have fantastic ski areas within 10 minutes of Haus Bergheim on which we have covered thousands of kilometers! It really is a joy to have this so nearby and we have spent many happy hours with friends/guests exploring the delights of the Dachstein West and Krippenstein ski areas. Occasionally we travel a little further (25 minutes) to Loser and Feuerkogel which are also excellent. Each of the areas offers something different and we are fortunate to have such a variety to choose from.
Whilst downhill skiing is our first passion we have also taken the occasional adventure on the Langlauf 'loipe'. Once again we are spoilt for choice with a great variety of langlauf 'loipe' within 5-15 minutes of our house.
In Summer we spend as much time as possible exploring the local area, either walking or Mountain Biking. We are very lucky to be surrounded by hundreds of kilometers of fantastic walking and cycling routes, taking in forests, mountains and lakes. We often plan our route to stop at one of the numerous 'Alms' where we sample the local hospitality, take in the wonderful views and feel refreshed before the journey home. Of course with Lake Hallstatt opposite our house we sometimes just go for a relaxing walk, and sit by the lake at the Seeraunzn with a cold beer and delicious food.
Les & Sue Milner purchased this apartment in 2009
Built in 1823, Haus Bergheim is a traditional ‘Forester’ house which has been recently renovated retaining its original rustic character combined with modern features to provide spacious, comfortable accommodation in quiet relaxed surroundings 50 metres from Lake Hallstatt.
Haus Bergheim is a home from home. It's thick stone walls and log burner make it very cosy in Winter and the insulation properties make it pleasantly cool in Summer when the temperatures can be above 35 deg.
The private garden and terrace is also a feature that guests enjoy for quiet relaxation, mountain gazing and a safe place for small children to play.
We scoured the greater eastern slopes of Salzburg and this was the best full package around. It didn't disappoint. The space was awesome for a couple (that's us) or even a family up to 6 people. Two bathrooms were very nice and the shower was amazing. Kitchen is just right and nice outdoor dining if you choose. Hosts live upstairs but you wouldn't know it. They were readily available and shared great ideas of how to explore the area. Everything was clean, purposeful, and comfortable. We stay in apartments rather than hotels and this was top.
Keep it simple and eat just 2 minutes away at Steegwirt Gausthaus, they have the best Weiss-Biere and versions of Schitzel around. I would not recommend eating at the Gausthaus adjacent the Post (flies were impossible to avoid and swat). There is all the hiking and mountain biking you can handle - try the Sarstein for a rigorous day! There is also the beautiful lake across the road that you can rent kayaks to enjoy or simply take a walk or go for a run around it using the paths and roads.
A big ackowledgement to Les and Sue, they have really created a special place in the middle of a special place. I would definitely recommend their apartment.
We stayed at Haus Bergheim for 8 nights in June 2016 and our immediate impression was that it was one of the best, if not the best, apartment we had ever rented in our many years travelling. The ground floor apartment is perfect for four adults. We had elderly ladies with us who shared the twin bedded room. Both bedrooms were spacious and well equipped. The wardrobe/shelving combinations offered loads of space for all our belonging so no arguing about who had which shelf. Very comfortable beds and beautiful bedding. The kitchen living room is roomy, well equipped, bright and beautifully decorated. The house is about 200 years old and full of character but has been renovated with style and practicality. We especially loved the bathroom with it's huge walk in luxury shower and the private rear garden with terrace, table and chairs for those warm evenings. Lots of little extras were provided which really make a difference to a holiday such as liquid soap, cling film, kitchen roll, aluminium foil, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, salt and pepper, and much more. Finally Sue and Les were great landlords - really helpful without being at all intrusive. Although they live upstairs we were hardly aware they were there but when we needed help to find an English speaking doctor Sue sorted us out and even made an appointment for us. Halstatt is stunning, picture book pretty and a lovely place to stroll around, sit in cafes or eat dinner. We would definitely return to Haus Bergheim if we visit the area in the future. Thank you Sue and Les.
We loved our stay here. The unit was spotlessly clean and extremely well-maintained. The location is great -- just across the road from the lake, but in an uncongested area with a path through the woods just steps away. It was pin-drop quiet at night. I wish we could have brought home the extremely comfortable bed and fantastic shower! There is a nice terrace just outside the kitchen door. The owners, Sue and Les, who live upstairs, are the perfect hosts. They went out of their way to provide useful information and advice, but were completely unobtrusive. We rented four different places during our 3-week travels in Czech Republic and Austria, and this was our favorite, by far. And, of course, the Hallstatt area is beautiful. A great place to visit, especially if you like hiking.
We stayed in Les and Sue's rental apartment in August 2015. The rental was roomy, clean and the backyard vistas where gorgeous for a morning tea or afternoon beverage. They were nearby (upstairs) if needed and helpful in a number of ways but also where also respectful of our privacy. Great people. Would highly recommend this place to anyone.
We stayed by Sue 5 days with the whole family. The apartment has a big kitchen and living room and two bedrooms. We are suprised with the size of the apartment. We thought it was smaller. The owner respected our privacy. The location is very good, 5 minutes to Hallstatt by car. It was really good choice.

Haus Bergheim is located within the Dachstein West mountain range, beside Lake Hallstatt (Hallstatt is a UNESCO world heritage site), part of the Salzkammergut area. The Spa town of Bad Ischl is 14 km and we are within an hour of Salzburg.
It is a rural and very traditional region, the 'Austrian Lake District', beautiful whatever the season or weather. In the winter it is a winter sports haven and in the summer offers everything if you like the outdoors; particularly renowned for walking, cycling and mountain biking, but also popular for kayaking, climbing and fly fishing.
There are a number of ski areas around, the nearest and biggest being the Dachstein West. The Krippenstein, offers free riding/off piste. Both these are easily accessible by free ski bus (100 metres from Haus Bergheim). There is plenty of opportunity for other winter activities e.g. ski touring, snow shoeing, tobogganing, sleigh rides, etc.
There are a host of walking/cycling opportunities and plenty of sightseeing attractions.
The village shops are a 10 minute walk where you will find the local Baker, Butcher and a small supermarket. There are also three local bars/restaurants, ‘Steegwirt’, ‘Hotel Post’ and ‘Fleischauerei’ offering fresh local produce, local beer, schnapps and of course delicious cakes/desserts.
The town of Bad Goisern is a 10 minute drive away and has many facilities including a weekly farmers market, bars/restaurants/coffee shops, ski/sports shops, cycle hire, supermarkets (4), museum, swimming pool etc.
