Lovely little character property, in an ideal location which has been excellently refurbished

  • 5 of 5

This is an absolute gem of a place, perfect for two with a cosy lounge, comfortable bedroom, lovely recently refurbished bathroom and quaint kitchen. Communication with the host was excellent, and the property was very convenient, with two pubs within a mile walk that we found, the bottom of Dovedale in a walk, and the small village having a nice traditional feel to it. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to walkers and fans of pubs. The George in Alstonfield is particularly worth a visit, but booking is advisable.

Lovely cottage in a peaceful spot

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Old Millers Cottage for 3 nights in October and had a wonderful experience. The cottage is exactly as shown in the photos, with a recently refurbished bathroom, very clean and well kept, and a small, but very well equipped kitchen. The owner was very helpful with any queries we had and made the check in / check out very easy, even though we arrived late on the Friday.

Would definitely be happy to come back and recommend to friends!

Fab location

  • 3 of 5

The cottage is very quaint and bijoux, and in an excellent location for many walks from the front door.

The kitchen is small, but very well equipped with all the utensils, baking trays and crockery you need.

The bathroom is a lovely size with plenty of hot water. We found it hard with only having one bath towel, and as the heating was off as it was summer, the towels never dried properly so became rather smelly. A couple of bath sheets per person would have made this nicer and feel a bit more luxurious.

As the cottage is nestled into the hillside, it was a bit damp and sometimes smelled. We bought a gel air freshener, which went someway to making it more pleasant!

There were signs telling us not to change the heating settings, and the radiators were off, but the electric fire in the lounge worked well at providing a burst of heat in the evening. (It was fairly chilly, even in July!)

There is no wifi at the property - it was actually nice to switch off for a week. But there is also no mobile signal or 3G/4G, so just be prepared to be without any form of communication!

Upon returning home each night, we took a cup of tea and sat outside in the bench by the river. There is no outside seating at the cottage, but this was a lovely spot to relax after a day's walking.

All in all, the cottage was cute and provided an excellent base for a walking holiday. For us, the damp, the heating situation and the towels led us to give a rating of 3 stars.

Owner's Response: With regards to heating it's obviously not usually on during the summer months, but this being England we never know what the weather is going to be like. A phone call on either of my 2 numbers provided at the cottage and I could have provided instruction on how to turn on the heating. The heating information applies to not altering the times the the heating is set to switch on and off at. One bath towel each has been sufficient for previous guests, but I can understand there may be drying issues if the weather is not favourable. The cottage isn't damp and none of our previous guests have raised this as an issue, old solid stone buildings do not have the characteristics of modern insulated properties, this needs to be considered.

Here in the White Peak area of the Peak National Park, characterised by its rolling plateau split by steep sided dales, lies the beautiful hamlet of Milldale. The hamlet nestles at the end of Dovedale and enjoys numerous walks starting and finishing there, with parking and a small refreshment shop for visitors. The cottage is the perfect starting point for visiting the surrounding Dales, explore the crags, caves, spires and deep limestone ravines of this iconic landscape. The area has been popular with anglers since the 17th Century after Izaak Walton and Charles Cotton published 'The Compleat Angler'. It is from this book that the bridge at Milldale, crossing the River Dove, gets its name .

Short journeys by car is all that is required to take you to many local attractions and towns. The seat of the Duke of Devonshire, Chatsworth House, is close by with its award winning farm shop. Visit Bakewell and try a pudding, Buxton for opera and it's Georgian Crescent architecture. Carsington Water offers plenty of activities from a walk around the lake, to power boat courses! Ashbourne and Buxton Spa are both within a 25min drive and include major stores and supermarkets. The area is a haven for walkers, sightseers and day trippers all searching for enjoyment and relaxation, Old Millers Cottage is the perfect setting for you to be based. An excellent choice of restaurants is available or pubs in beautiful rural locations also specialising in good quality food.

There is no internet / wifi at the cottage. Also do to the steep valley sides there is no mobile phone reception, you have to travel to higher ground to get a signal.
