We had a 3 night stay at this cottage, and it was in a beautiful and quiet location. The cottage is well looked after and has everything you need. I would have no hesitation in staying at this cottage again,

Old Millers Cottage is a little cottage in a beautiful little village / hamlet called Milldale

  • 5 of 5

We've had a brilliant week staying at a lovely little cottage called Old Millers Cottage in a little village / hamlet called Milldale, it was the perfect base for us and our little mini schnauzer as there are plenty of walks from the front door and no need to use the car.

Old Millers Cottage has been very tastefully decorated and renovated to a very good standard whilst still keeping its character, there is a small paved gated area that's enough space to let your small dog out (with all the walking you'll do in the daytime there's no need for a big garden for your dog, they'll be too tired)

Milldale is very peaceful situated on the River Dove, just under a 4 mile walk down the river will take you to Dovedale (with stepping stones across the river that our dog managed to fall off of as she likes to race around and ended up taking a dip and swim which didn't bother her)

There are no shops in Milldale but one of the houses "Pollys" sells refreshments, sandwiches, ice cream from the stable door.

A house just a couple of hundred yards from the cottage sells their hens proper free range eggs.

Plenty of other walks from the door, a lovely pub at Alstonfield just a mile walk from the cottage, another lovely pub at Wetton just over 2 miles from the cottage.

Ashbourne (about 5 miles from Milldale) is the nearest town with a couple of good supermarkets and a great range of lovely independent shops and antique shops.

There is no wifi or mobile signal at the cottage (or in Milldale) which although strange at first it was bliss. There is a telephone box but you can only use it if you have a credit or debit card and good old BT rip you off by charging £2.20 a minute !!! So if you need to make a call walk to the top of a hill and you'll get a signal.

If we could add one thing to the cottage it would be a washing machine, although there is no spare space in the kitchen, possibly one could be plumbed in to the very well proportioned bathroom with some sort of housing to disguise it ?

A beautiful cottage

  • 4 of 5

A beautiful compact cottage in a fabulous location. The cottage is clean and well equipped with recently refurbished bathroom and kitchen. Very comfortable and we would happily recommend it to any couple looking for a holiday. The George at Astonefield is well worth walking to as well.

Charming and cosy

  • 5 of 5

Had a lovely few days stay at the cottage. Clean, warm, nicely decorated and comfortable, it perfectly suited our needs. No phone reception or wifi which was both a real pleasure to be cut off and sometimes limiting but a brisk walk up the hill to the pub (The George, Alstonefield) soon picked up reception.

We got lost following the postcode and found if using Google Maps on an iPhone, head to Polly's Kitchen which is almost opposite the cottage. Ant's directions were spot on though from the A515. A good value lovely cottage, highly recommended!

Here in the White Peak area of the Peak National Park, characterised by its rolling plateau split by steep sided dales, lies the beautiful hamlet of Milldale. The hamlet nestles at the end of Dovedale and enjoys numerous walks starting and finishing there, with parking and a small refreshment shop for visitors. The cottage is the perfect starting point for visiting the surrounding Dales, explore the crags, caves, spires and deep limestone ravines of this iconic landscape. The area has been popular with anglers since the 17th Century after Izaak Walton

and Charles Cotton published 'The Compleat Angler'. It is from this book that the bridge at Milldale, crossing the River Dove, gets its name .

Short journeys by car is all that is required to take you to many local attractions and towns. The seat of the Duke of Devonshire, Chatsworth House, is close by with its award winning farm shop. Visit Bakewell and try a pudding, Buxton for opera and it's Georgian Crescent architecture. Carsington Water offers plenty of activities from a walk around the lake, to power boat courses! Ashbourne and Buxton Spa are both within a 25min drive and include major stores and supermarkets. The area is a haven for walkers, sightseers and day trippers all searching for enjoyment and relaxation, Old Millers Cottage is the perfect setting for you to be based. An excellent choice of restaurants is available or pubs in beautiful rural locations also specialising in good quality food
