sweet cottage, great location but very busy at weekends, would go again

  • 4 of 5

perfect for two as long as you don't want to snuggle up on the settee, as tiny cottage. Great for a base for exploring surrounding area with fab walks and friendly pubs.

Characterful, clean and cosy cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage had everything we needed for our Easter break, beautiful accomodation and surroundings . We parked the car and didn't use it again until it was time to go home. We enjoyed many wonderful walks from the front door and enjoyed going back to such a lovely, well equipped cottage. Pure bliss! Oh and of course The George at Alstonfield being a short walk away was an added bonus. Wonderful food as always but it does seem necessary to book at weekends.

Many thanks and look forward to returning soon,

Sarah, Steve and Daisy

Cosy cottage, beautiful walks!

  • 5 of 5

We have just got home from our 4 night stay at the Old Miller's Cottage and I can honestly say we had a fantastic time! The location is fantastic with so many lovely walks literally on your doorstep! Our absolute favourite was the walk from milldale to dove dale stepping stones, a wonderful walk along the river with plenty of interesting sights along the way including caves!

There is a cottage in the village from which a lady sells ice creams, pasties, hot drinks and some essentials. If you need to do any food shopping, the closest place is Hartington where there are a couple of village shops and a cheese shop!

The cottage itself is lovely. It is small, so I wouldn't recommend it if you are planning on spending a lot of time indoors but for us it was the perfect base for our walks. There is a well equipped kitchen, electric fire/heater in the living room and a TV. Upstairs there is a comfortable bedroom and luxurious bathroom.

You do not get any phone signal or wifi as it is in a valley, but if you really need it you can climb to the top of the big hill towards alstonefield!

Last, but not least, pubs! There isn't a pub in milldale itself but a lovely, if not slightly fancy, pub in Alstonefield which is the village next door. Their food is fantastic but slightly on the pricey side, ranging from £12 to £24. There is also a pub in the other direction at Hope, but we were unable to visit it as it was closed the day we decided to walk that way! We did go to the pub at Wetton after our walk to Thors cave (another fab walk) ,which was great with a really friendly atmosphere.

Altogether, fantastic trip, great cottage, lovely holiday! :)

A lovely quaint cottage with all the mod cons. Highly recommended, can't wait to go back.

Lovely 4 night break. No wifi or phone signal, bliss! Lovely walks on your doorstep, so convenient. A trip to "Stepping Stones" is a must, can't wait to go back. Lovely pubs around with roaring fires just right as "Storm Doris" arrived.

Here in the White Peak area of the Peak National Park, characterised by its rolling plateau split by steep sided dales, lies the beautiful hamlet of Milldale. The hamlet nestles at the end of Dovedale and enjoys numerous walks starting and finishing there, with parking and a small refreshment shop for visitors. The cottage is the perfect starting point for visiting the surrounding Dales, explore the crags, caves, spires and deep limestone ravines of this iconic landscape. The area has been popular with anglers since the 17th Century after Izaak Walton

and Charles Cotton published 'The Compleat Angler'. It is from this book that the bridge at Milldale, crossing the River Dove, gets its name .

Short journeys by car is all that is required to take you to many local attractions and towns. The seat of the Duke of Devonshire, Chatsworth House, is close by with its award winning farm shop. Visit Bakewell and try a pudding, Buxton for opera and it's Georgian Crescent architecture. Carsington Water offers plenty of activities from a walk around the lake, to power boat courses! Ashbourne and Buxton Spa are both within a 25min drive and include major stores and supermarkets. The area is a haven for walkers, sightseers and day trippers all searching for enjoyment and relaxation, Old Millers Cottage is the perfect setting for you to be based. An excellent choice of restaurants is available or pubs in beautiful rural locations also specialising in good quality food
