Our cottage was originally a schoolhouse in the early 1900s. We loved the history of the house but not the bad design elements so we've spent a year renovating it to be comfortable while retaining a feeling of its past history. It has two cozy bedrooms, one with a queen sized bed and the other with twin beds. We made the third schoolroom into a shared bathroom with a lovely old claw foot tub and shiplapped walls with art work from an Eastern Shore artist. The entire house has 9 foot ceilings which brings in floods of light. The front living room has a soft, down-filled chaise lounge for reading and the back living room has a large opening into the kitchen to make it feel part of the house. Our home is located in the town of Onancock, a 10 minute walk to shops, a movie theater, restaurants and a farmer's market in the summer. It is a 15 minute walk to the town's marina where there are kayaks and boat rentals.

Why Julie Houser chose Onancock
I've been visiting the Eastern Shore for 30 plus years and have always loved the simple pace, the kindness of the locals, the ample seafood and produce. Onancock has the added bonus of having some stellar restaurants for the nights you don't want to cook. And there always seems to be some sort of event or festival to make the weekends fun.
What makes this Cottage unique
This cottage was love at first sight for me, sagging porches, scary plumbing and all. It was a joy to slowly peel away the bad and see the beauty underneath, making it all fresh and new. The house gets gorgeous light, even on a cloudy day. The floors are lovely, old, scarred and full of character. Its a small house but has beautiful detail and molding work. The ceilings throughout the house are painted a delicate green/blue making the house a peaceful and serene getaway for me.

A picture is worth a thousand words, and every photo of this place was spot on. This cottage is definitely worth a visit.
Perfect for a Small Getaway
I spent a weekend here with a few friends to go hang gliding on the eastern shore. It was exactly what we needed. Great value for the price. Very cozy and homey feel.
Location of the house is disappointing
The interior of the house is quite charming, but the house is nestled very close in between two other houses, resulting in no privacy. From the kitchen window, you have to view the neighbor's backyard full of trash and discarded items. If I wanted to be so close to neighbors, I would have rented a Shore house. The owner should be more upfront about her house being located so close to her neighbors'. One of the neighbors is obviously upset with the house being rented as he made sure to park his car so close to ours that my husband had to climb through the passenger side to get into our vehicle. Very disappointing as when you drive through the area, you see all the other houses with large side yards and lots of privacy.
Thank you for your visit and I'm happy that you found the interior charming as we make an effort to leave our guests a lovely and scrupulously clean home. I am so sorry that the neighbor's yard was perhaps not to your liking. We have had many guests stay before and no one has ever been troubled by this, but I'll do my best to resolve it. While we can't make our lot size larger, we have designed a driveway that will accommodate three cars. I have updated our photos to reflect this and to better show the neighboring homes as you recommended. Our neighbor has been very kind to our guests so I can't imagine why he would have acted poorly with your family. I thank you for your candor. I just wish you had conveyed this to us while you were actually still staying so we could have helped to resolve at least part of your concerns.
Wonderful home with tons of character
This was our first trip to the VA Eastern Shore. The home was clean, well furnished, kitchen had everything you needed to cook. The house itself has TONS of character, and the claw foot tub was wonderful. There was great food in town ,we had a great meal at Mallards on the Wharf. If you don't feel like going out to dine, Panzotti's delivers a great pizza. If you forgot anything for your trip, there is a Walmart nearby. I can't tell you how much we loved this house, it retained much of the "old" character, with all the modern amenities you could ask for.
Lovely little cottage that is beautifully decorated.
Had a great time. Loved the house. The restaurants in town are great. We had planned on eating at the Charlotte but when we got there they had a sign up saying reservations only. Even tho there was no mention on the website of needing them on the weekend. We ended up at Bizottos. Had a wonderful meal. Janet's is the best as well. The Saturday Farmers market is great.
Adorable, tranquil cottage
We loved the cottage - it was comfortable and just what we needed for a mom's weekend away. Onancock was cute and had a surprising number of restaurant options to chose from and some nice shops. We enjoyed Janet's for breakfast and the Irish pub one night and Mallards the other night for dinner. It was a great location to explore the peninsula - check out Cape Charles if you have time for a day trip!
Julie was easy to get in touch with when we couldn't figure out the shower and when we needed a beach recommendation.
We hope to be back next year for another weekend getaway!
