About Almirida village

Almirida is a small pretty seaside resort to the east of the bay of Souda. Situated about 24 kilometres or 15 miles west of Chania, and is becoming more popular with package tour companies. The resort boasts an impressive crescent shaped bay, and a reasonable selection of tavernas, café bars and shops, which stretch through the village. In the evening, life revolves around the waterfront tavernas and bars,

The atmosphere is more low key than many of the more well known resorts. Located up the hill and about a 10 minute walk from the beach, is the village of Plaka. Popular for its superb views of the bay of Souda and the White Mountains. The nearby village of Kalives can be reached along a pathway 4km away, where you will find a wider variety of tavernas, shops and a bank.

Not so long ago Almirida was a fishing village and a weekend retreat for Greeks visiting from Chania. Over the past few years Almirida has slowly grown into a small resort with an expanding number of villas, apartments and quite a few small family run hotels. Despite this change, it has remained popular with Greeks and many still use it for their weekend breaks. Almirida maintains a laid back, family-friendly atmosphere - very different from the notorious brash resorts such as Malia.

In the village you will find several mini markets as well as 2 bakeries and an excellent fresh fruit and vegetable shop (The Pear Tree). The wooded countryside behind Almirida is some of the most beautiful in Crete and a walkers paradise, especially in April and May when its not too hot and the spring flowers are on show. Mountain bikes can be hired locally. There is also a reasonable bus service if you wish to venture further.

This small seaside village has two gently shelving sandy beaches backed in places with waterside tavernas. Both beaches are safe for children and there are sun beds for rent. There is also a windsurfing school on the beach.

Hi John

We loved our stay and it suited the 20 somethings as well as the over 60's! Right distance from village but near enough to walk, will have to save up in order to return.

Please thank everyone for making the villa so welcoming and clean etc.

Lovely Villa in a great location

  • 4 of 5

Really enjoyed our stay at Villa Amadeus, chosen for its convenient location around 8 minutes flat walk to pretty Almirida village, (take a torch for walking back). Good sized pool set in a pretty well established garden with palm, orange, and lemon trees - very convenient for our G & T's ! The odd appliance not working in the kitchen and no free Wifi at the moment but otherwise we loved everything. Easy to book with lots of very useful information provided before and after booking.

Great location

  • 4 of 5

We had a very relaxing two week stay at Villa Amadeus. The villa is ideally positioned with a short walk into the town where there are a number of tavernas, shops and bars. The villa was clean and spacious, and the pool was large and surrounded by flowering bushes giving privacy. Almyrida is exactly how we remembered it from a visit 22 years ago - a great place for a family holiday.

Owner's Response: Almyrida really has maintained a lovely small beach village atmosphere. There are great bars and tavernas which all have very good free WiFi but it is still very quiet and family friendly.

Location, location, location

We found Amadeus to be in the perfect location for a peaceful holiday within a short walk of tavernas, shops and bars. There is always somewhere to sit in the sun or in the shade whichever you prefer. The views are glorious in every direction. The pool is a nice depth so you can stand up in it if you just want to cool down. The villa is very private - only one neighbouring villa which is positioned to maintain privacy. The only drawback I can find is that you need to remember to take the key with you when sitting by the pool as the only way back in is through the front door; we were always terrified we were going to lock ourselves out! We had a few light bulbs that were not working when we arrived but these were soon replaced by Martin. John was very helpful when making our booking and Andy the pool man was very friendly and chatty.

For eating out we could recommend Thalmi and Dimitri's in particular. We had glorious weather apart from a little rain one day and spent the whole week chilling out. We enjoyed shopping in the local shops; you can get almost anything you need there. The baker does particularly scrummy spinach pies.

We are hoping to return next year.

Owner's Response: Great call on the restaurants. The food at both Thalami and Dimitris is great. We particularly recommend Dimitris for lunch by the beach

Pretty perfect

  • 4 of 5

Our stay in Villa Armadeus was pretty much perfect. The location was just what we look for - walking distance to tavernas, shops and beach but secluded enough deep in the olive and orange groves to allow us to feel hidden from the rat race. Regular linen change and pool cleaning was much appreciated. The villa is well equipped. We found that the dishwasher didn't really work with dishwasher tabs (suggest buying powder) and the addition of the safe was great (there is an earlier review suggesting the purchase of one so it shows how responsive the owners are). The only thing that didn't make it perfect for our family (mainly our 13 & 9 year old son's) was the lack of wifi. Unfortunately, dongles weren't an option for us with idevices. On the plus side, it meant that we managed to get them out each evening to a taverna who all have wifi access.

Almyrida is just perfect - small, unpretentious and visited by many different European nationalities. Just like Greece was 20 years ago.

VERY PLEASANT STAY : APPRECIATED BY THE FAMILY !

  • 5 of 5

The stay at Villa Amadeus was very pleasant and the villa really in line with the description :

We've appreciated the space and the view on the mountains.

The swimming pool was well sized.

The Villa equipment was adapted.

The location not far from the village center was good for shopping as much as for still nights and rests !

Great location on the edge of Almirida village, within a few minutes walk of shops, bars, restaurants and the famous Blue Flag Almirida Beach.

WiFi to your laptop now available on request and at an exgtra charge, though FREE unlimited WiFi is available at most nearby tavernas and bars.

Full air-conditioning throughout

Nearby: Good swimming at Almirida Beach. Scuba/Snorkelling and boat trips from the beach. Omega Diving Centre (PADI) in Almyrida for the BEST DIVING in Greece! There is also a windsurfing school. Walking galore, easy tracks straight from the door. Spectacular countryside with breathtaking views of White Mountains from villa & all bedroom terraces. Sea Fishing - tackle shop in nearby Kalives. The White Mountains dominate the area and provide a dramatic backdrop to the sandy beaches at Almirida, Kalives and Georgeoupolis. The Apokoronas area is also well known for its traditional inland villages such as Vamos, Kefalas, Plaka and Kokkino Chorio - location for the film 'Zorba The Greek'.

The large bay that makes up the seaside resorts of Almirida and Kalives has many separate, safe, sandy beaches, usually with full facilities. Almirida, is a thriving seaside resort with tavernas and bars lining the sea front. There are a couple of mini-markets, a bakery, patisserie, a wine shop and newsagents.

Mountain bikes can be hired and there is also a small taxi rank. There is a bus service to Kalives & Chania.

Kalives is a nearby larger village along the coast.. In addition to the beaches, tavernas, bars & tourist shops there are local shops plus a good-sized supermarket (IN.KA). Banking, post office and petrol station are available.

Chania - a cosmopolitan city voted the most beautiful on Crete. With the White Mountains as a backdrop, its Venetian harbour, museums, fascinating indoor market & an old quarter of narrow streets packed with interesting shops, Chania offers something for most visitors. It is a vibrant place steeped in Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish history. The harbour area is a great place to sit & watch the world go by at one of the sea-front tavernas.

Charter Flight time 4 hours from UK airports to Chania (1/2 hour drive) or Heraklion (2 hour drive). We can also advise on reliable local car hire at reasonable cost with good English speaking staff..
