About Louise Killens
Welcome to the 5 pines. Named after the old growth majestic pines that tower over the our home, and reflecting the five members of our family. Built by renowned Chelsea Builder Peter Markhauser along his wife Louise, this house is culmination of a 25 year career designing and building homes in the Chelsea community. Sharing the home are their three children, Thomas, Paul and Katherine, each of whom have grown up as river kids, becoming national level competitive canoe and kayak racers along the way. Peter and Louise have been no slouches either, having both ascended to world level status as competitive dragon boaters. Suffice it to say that the cool waters of the Gatineau River flow through their veins. There is a loft which adjoins the house but has a separate entrance. We may be there should you need any assistance, but otherwise we will be scarce and can be reached by phone or email.

Why Louise Killens chose Chelsea
The 5 pines is like no other home. Perched on the edge of an outcrop of Canadian shield granite on a peninsula of the Gatineau River, the home commands impressive 270 degree views up and down this majestic and historic river. The home itself is a symphony of natural materials including reclaimed barn wood wide-plank floors and mill work, barn beam fireplace surrounds and staircase components, natural slate floors, and bent iron railings. Wind your way up through the home and you will be delighted by the views of the surrounding mountains and river from each and every room. Keep going and a surprise awaits you behind a door in the master bedroom where a secret stairway leads up to a delightful third floor attic sanctuary, with an unbelievable and endless view up the river from a romantic Romeo and Juliet style deck. (we hope your not afraid of heights otherwise you may want to avoid this sky top perch) Hungry after scaling those dizzying highest? Take a break in the covered porch and enjoy yet another view north up the Gatineau river. Grill your lunch on the BBQ and have a cool one and in no time you’ll be ready for your next adventure in the surrounding Gatineau hills. Sunbathing on our dock, take a swim in the “Gat” (as the local kids refer to the Gatineau river). Walk down to the the local golf course for 9 or 18 holes, or game of tennis. Canoeing, Kayaking , or stand-up paddle boarding there is no end to the activities available right at our door step. If you’re visiting in the winter, you can ski along the adjacent railway ski trail which hugs the banks of the “Gat”. for for more intensive ski challenge you can take a short drive to the world renowned ski trails of the Gatineau Park. Up for a little downhill skiing? There are three ski hills within close proximity. Après Ski? No problem. Just stop into our quaint little village of Chelsea where any culinary desire can be met in a variety of pubs and restaurants.

Fantastic place...beautiful location. Thank you for sharing!
We went with some friends for a colour trip right after Thanksgiving. The home, the layout and the deck were fantastic for a group of friends to sit back and relax!! THe house is beautifully built (we found out later that the homeowner is a contractor), with amazing touches such as reclaimed wood everywhere and phenomenal touches. We had a wonderful time! Thank you for sharing your home!
Thank you Tony, you were a wonderful guest! 😉
Amazing house in a gorgeous setting!
Our family met up to celebrate Thanksgiving together - we absolutely loved the setting and the house. The house itself is provides lot's of great spaces to relax as a group - the living room and the dining room worked wonderfully. Too bad it was not warmer as the outside deck is stunning and well appointed for outdoor dining.
The house is located walking distance to hiking trails which we took in everyday of our stay and the Gatineau Park is a short drive away. We headed there on the Sunday morning to take in the multicoloured leaves.
We definitely hope to visit again - the house is perfect for 10 guests!
Private, spacious beautiful home on the Gatineau River
Five Pines was the perfect getaway for our group of five women from the Ottawa area. We swam in the river, kayaked and relaxed by the water. The outdoor deck off the dining room is a lovely place for morning coffee. We felt as if we were in a tree house. The kitchen is very well-equipped and everyone enjoyed preparing meals around the large island. The spacious mud room off the main entry is so practical, great for storing boots, jackets, Coleman coolers, etc.
We hope to return during the winter for cross country skiing. Louise was very accommodating and a pleasure to deal with!
A beautiful river oasis so close to the city!
We rented Louise and Peter's home as a long weekend escape for my partner's birthday with a few of our friends. Living it Ottawa, the location was perfect! We were close enough that the drive wasn't daunting, but felt like we had adequately escaped the city. It was easy to take quick trips to the grocery store, Wakefield, or ride our bikes around Gatineau Park in the morning and then spend the afternoon swimming and floating around on the river (which was much more calm and inviting than expected).
The photos posted of Louise and Peter's house look beautiful, but let me tell you... it is even more gorgeous in person. There is no detail that was missed. The vaulted ceilings, beautiful old barn-board flooring and views of the river from every room made even the rainy days extremely enjoyable.
Additionally, Louise was always quick to respond and helpful to deal with. Thank you for making our long-weekend escape such an amazing experience!

The property was delightful with decks for great views. The river was a favourite in the heat for cooling off and paddle boarding.
