SEVERAL THINGS TO NOTE BEFORE YOU BOOK:

Review the rental agreement. There are a number of expectations that we ask you to observe. It is YOUR responsibility to communicate these to others in your party BEFORE stay. Here are the major ones:

1. This is a NON-SMOKING PROPERTY. That includes the home, the decks, and the grounds. (Big Canoe is VERY dry at times, and high fire risk is common.)

2. The home is made available to ONLY the number of occupants specified at time of booking. Do not bring or invite persons (day or night) or a dog to the property, who have not been specifically identified, quantified, approved, and paid at the time the reservation is made. (When booking the property, your indication that a dog will be joining you will generate a charge). The total cost of the rental is based upon the maximum number of guests who will occupy the home, plus pet charge if applicable, even though that number may vary during during the term of the rental. The overnight occupancy of the home is limited to the number of occupants specified at booking. Additional overnight guests coming into the home who are not part of the rental party is similar to turning the "vacation rental" into a hotel, and these additional guests will be charged as such. To avoid what may potentially be an awkward situation, be sure to identify ALL occupants at time of booking. I may approve a very limited number of occasional "day-guests" during the term of your occupancy, but the home may NOT be used as a gathering place for groups without specific host approval. Charges will apply for day or night guests not identified during the booking process, at a rate equivalent to that which would have been generated had the guest been identified at time of booking.

3. I ask that guests here observe reasonable and acceptable standards of care and behavior while in the home. I want the home to be as nice as possible for every guest. I provide plenty of drink coasters, disinfectant wipes, and grill-cleaning materials. Spills, food, and grease in the oven, stovetop, grill, floors, and surfaces are the RENTER'S RESPONSIBILITY to address BEFORE CHECKOUT. Guests will be responsible for removing trash to the Big Canoe facility. I also recommend a parent's watchful eye on the kids, as it's always easier to prevent a problem than to fix one.

4. This is a mountain community, and this home rests 2000' up the side of a mountain. That means you should expect to travel curvy, inclined roads to get here and around Big Canoe. There is a chance that your cell reception will be great or poor, depending on carrier. Your internet performance, and TV channel choice and reception may not be what you experience in flat urban areas. Refraining from using the internet for streaming, gaming, Netflix, etc. will leave plenty of bandwidth for traditional web surfing, e-mail, and transactional activity.

5. Big Canoe does not permit on-street parking, or parking of RV's. The driveway will accommodate 5 cars, but large pickups will reduce that, and RVs are not practical. You may park ONE car at the bottom of the cul-de-sac for very short periods, but for vehicles in excess of 5, you must make other arrangements, such as shuttling from one of the parking lots inside BC.

This home is located on a large, very private double lot. There is a SEPARATE, DETACHED efficiency apartment that at times is used by the OWNER ONLY if he happens to be in Big Canoe while the house is occupied by guests. Owner MAY or MAY NOT, depending upon schedule, be available to greet you, provide an orientation to the home and to answer questions during your stay.

INQUIRIES AND BOOKINGS:

INSTANT BOOKING is enabled. Calendar and rates are ALWAYS up to date. I try to respond to all inquiries within 20 MINUTES. Inquiries about availability, cost, and discounts are not necessary. Simply enter the dates of your stay and the number in your party into the VRBO calendar, and it will provide a reliable quote. You can then move directly to a reservation request. I am very happy to respond to specific questions about my home and your stay here. Including a few words about your group and vacation plans is always welcome.

Payment terms: 50% payable at booking, balance payable 30 days before arrival. (Failure to submit balance within 48 hours of billing is a breach of the rental agreement.)

Cancellation policy: full refund of amount paid if cancelled greater than 60 days before arrival date.

An additional suggestion: Just as a traveler wants to know the details of his accommodations, the homeowner wants to know something about his guests and how they intend to use his property. As noted above, I attempt to respond to all serious inquiries within 20 minutes. To ensure security, the address will only be provided to booked guests.

Upon arrival, guests MUST immediately contact owner via VRBO message only, if there are any concerns regarding neatness/cleanliness of the home.

Finally, note that in order to make the home affordable to all group sizes, (and to reflect the additional wear and cleaning associated with larger groups and/or pets) the seasonal base rate is applied to a group size of SIX. Each guest beyond that number who will be accommodated in the home during the term of the rental is calculated at $10 per night per person, and reflected in your VRBO quote. Additional guests who are invited to the home but have not been stipulated at time of booking will be charged at a rate of $10 per night per person for the entire length of the term, as though they HAD been included in the total guest count at time of registration/reservation. Due to past abuses, this will be strictly enforced. A dog will be charged at a weekly rate of $175, and possibly less for shorter term stays. When booking the home, applicant should note the TOTAL number of guests who will sleep in the home during your stay, even though some may arrive late or depart early, and thus not be present during the entire term of the rental. The rental rate will be based upon this number.

I am looking forward to hosting you soon

About Kevin Worrilow

I am a retiree of the IBM Corporation, having grown up in the small northwestern Ohio town of Lima. I hold a BS degree and MBA from "THE" Ohio State University. Most of my business career was spent in Cincinnati. I enjoy traveling throughout the USA, and have a goal of exploring every National Park. I have also made many journeys to Europe and Central America, traveling many countries via train or bus with a backpack. I am an avid reader, swimmer, hiker, tennis player, student of Objectivist philosophy, and music aficionado, with a collection of over 4000 vintage vinyl "rock" LPs, which I also sell to other collectors across the world. I live in beautiful Naples FL most of the year, and spend parts of my summer in Big Canoe, which on any given summer day is about 15 degrees cooler than south Florida (in fact, my elevation here in BC is usually around 10 degrees cooler than Atlanta in the summer!)

Kevin Worrilow purchased this house in 2016

Why Kevin Worrilow chose Jasper

I happened upon this home during a weekend visiting Big Canoe. (I had no intention of buying a house!) I was immediately struck by the uniqueness of the design and layout, which is ideal for not only large gatherings but also for everyday family living. It has ample open space to accommodate an extended family or company wanting to enjoy a shared experience, but also provides a number of separate nooks, rooms, 2 decks and 3 floors to give residents plenty of privacy and the ability to "do their own thing". Plus, it has TWO rooms, one elevated to tree-top level, that are IDEAL for billiards and other games. The chef in your group will love the Wolf commercial range and other high-end kitchen appliances.

Of course, the wooded, mountainside setting speaks for itself. Where else can you fall asleep to the sound of a flowing stream and wake up to the sun coming up over the mountain? Or pass deer, wild turkeys, BEARS, or maybe even BOBCATS as you wind your way down to the golf course, tennis courts, or swimming pools? And we haven't even talked about the wild azaleas and rhododendrons in the spring....

Beyond the property line, you have the wonderful, National Park-like setting of Big Canoe, with amenities that rival the finest resorts but nestled in the Appalachian foothills!

What makes this house unique

The first feature you will HEAR as you step out of your car is the soothing sound of the waterfalls below. The first feature you'll SEE as you enter the home is the authentic Craftsman design and flourishes, and the seasonal view through the back of the home of the stream bed and mountains beyond. Entering the front door, observe the tall wainscoting throughout, the hardwood floors, and the vaulted, all-glass, "in the treetops" billiard room. You'll feel as though you are in a treehouse and walking through the clouds (which at times you are!) Note the authentic Craftsman moldings around transom-topped doors and windows. Check out the professional kitchen, then proceed through the living room, past the stacked-stone fireplace, out the double doors, and onto the deck. Take in the view of the valley, the sounds of the stream, and the beauty of the mountains. Now, multiply that by the fact that you have the same views and sounds from almost every room in the house, and the lower covered deck as well! Returning inside, peek into the huge 1st floor master suite with jet-tub, then detour to the terrace level where you'll find another comfortable great room with 50" TV, another master suite with heated floors, and another glass-enclosed entertainment room. Upstairs on the top level, you'll find an Amish-made queen Craftsman bedroom, and another bedroom with THREE twins and a trundle for the kids, all with that fantastic view! Life's very good here, and I would be happy for you discover it by spending a few days in "Galt's Gulch"!

Absolutely the Best at Big Canoe!

  • 5 of 5

My family has been to the Big Canoe Community a few times now staying in different rentals and I can honestly say that "Galt's Gulch" is the absolute best. It is so much more than just a rental - it is truly a home. The home has beautiful high-end craftsmen style furniture, top-of-the-line appliances, great kitchenware & dishes and wonderful bedding. The home is extremely spacious - we had a group of 8 and had beds to spare. Of the 5 total bedrooms, three have king size beds which allows for multiple adult couples travelling together to have equal space. There are 2 gamerooms loaded with a full size pool table, authentic air hockey, ping pong table & tons of board games.

Added to that is a huge dvd collection and a cabinet full of books. There is no lack of indoor entertainment. However, outdoors is the real reason you should come to Big Canoe. The home has 2 huge decks, one that is completely covered in case of rain.

When outside on the decks, you can hear the rush of water from the creek below. Plus you are surrounded by beautiful woods and grounds allowing for total privacy.

For the able bodied, there is a trail down to the creek directly off of the lower deck.

Once at the creek, you can take 2 separate fairly easy hikes to waterfalls. When my grandchildren weren't at the creek or waterfalls, they were at Disharoon Lake. You can spend you days there enjoying all the activities - all included with the armbands provided by your host, Kevin. Lastly, let me say there is nothing better than renting directly from an owner who goes above and beyond on everything to make sure your stay is perfect. Kevin is always available if you have questions or in need of anything.

He is the perfect host. Thank you Kevin for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home. Hopefully, we can be one of your best repeat renters, at least until we buy our own place in Big Canoe!

Owner's Response: Susie and DD, thank you so much for taking the time to write such a thoughtful and extensive review. It is VERY much appreciated, and I think maybe I should just substitute YOUR description of the home for mine in my listing! In any case, I loved having you here, and hope to see you again, either in Louisiana, or here in Big Canoe as my guest or maybe as a neighbor!

Galt's Gulch is a beautiful home!

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure to stay at this wonderful home for a mini vacation and it did not disappoint. Upon our arrival the owner greeted us with bottle of wine and chocolates. Kevin (the owner) you were such a wonderful host to work with and better yet a pleasure to talk too. We have stayed at many homes and I will say Kevin supplies a lot of things that normal are not. Our grand-kids loved traveling down behind the house to the creek and going to the lake to swim, paddle boat and kayaks! They near got bored! The drive to the home is unbelievably beautiful. All 7 of us had the best time ever and we hope to come back sometime soon! Kevin thanks again for being a great host!

Owner's Response: JoAnn, those are about the nicest comments I’ve ever received, about the home or anything else! Made me blush a little! Thanks so much for coming, for taking such great care of the home, and for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful review. I hope you will all be back sometime soon!

Perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of staying at this property during the summer of 2018. The house was beautiful. The location was phenomenal. We were able to keep everyone happy with golf, hiking, wild life, paddle boards, lake swimming, pool, ping pong, board games and boating. We definitely are looking for the next available time frame for us to return. The owner was super nice and provided some welcome treats.

We loved it !!

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 12, including 5 adults and 7 children, stayed for 5 nights. We had ample space and the house was spotless. Everything we needed was provided and Kevin insured we felt welcomed. Unfortunately it rained for 2 days but I can’t imagine staying in a better house as we had ping pong, pool, air hockey and lots of board games to keep kids and adults happy. The house itself is a 15 minute drive from Big Canoe main gate. It is a windy mountain road. It feels remote but supermarket, gas station, ice cream shop and Home Restaurant are all within 5 mins of main gate. The Swim club pool and lake was a 10 min drive and it can’t be missed if you are visiting in summer. Eight armbands for entry were provided and this was a nice perk. We realized that this pool is closed weekdays from Aug 1st but the other Wildcat pool is open. Big Canoe is beautiful and I would highly recommend the Big Bear Pub and restaurant. The food was fresh, healthy and the menu suited everyone in our group. We would have gone back a second night but it is closed on Mondays. The staff at Big Canoe were outstanding and the locals very friendly. The only downside was having to take trash to the trash facility daily due to risk of bears. All of us want to go back.

AWESOME stay at Galt's Gulch

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at this house in Big Canoe was awesome!!!! The house was absolutely beautiful and spacious. We had four families staying here and we never felt cramped. There is a large dining room table and we could all dine together. The guys really enjoyed the pool table and playing ping pong. We brought games to play, but he provides many games at the house. The two decks were so nice and the view was beautiful. You could actually hear the waterfall on the decks. Kevin's description of the house is spot on and he is an excellent host. Kevin providing the armbands for the swimming areas was a plus. We had a lot of fun at the pools and lake. I would highly recommend staying at this house. I know we will be returning!!!

Amazing!!

  • 5 of 5

Three generations of us stayed in this spacious and spectacular home for three nights. The kind host was there to greet us on arrival, with welcome gifts, and to answer all of our questions. The home is beautifully furnished and we lacked.nothing. Hiking trails are right behind the house, and the views are amazing.

Owner's Response: Another great rental experience for me, and glad it was the same for you all. Really appreciate you leaving the house in such great shape. Hope to see you again, and if so how about I leave a bottle of rum on the table instead of the wine?! Kevin

Please note the following restrictions/house rules:

SMOKING: This is strictly a NON-SMOKING property. Smoking on the decks and surrounding grounds is prohibited due to fire hazard liability. Dogs ONLY under 20 pounds are allowed, but they must be completely house-trained and non-chewing. A pet "accident" carries a non-negotiable charge as specified in the rental agreement. Dogs may NOT be left alone uncaged if guests are not present. Please...no pets on furniture or beds.

CHILDREN: Young children must be supervised by adult guests while in the home, and may not be left alone in the home for any period of time. Adult presence and supervision is absolutely required when children 12 and under are using the pool table and stereos.

GUESTS: Attendance in the home is strictly limited to the named guests provided and agreed at time of reservation. We will accommodate up to TWO four-hour instances of "day-visitors" to the home, over the course of the rental. Instances of visitors beyond that number will be charged $50 per. ANY overnight visitors which were not initially listed/approved in the reservation will only be permitted with a charge of $100 per night per visitor, payable before gate entry will be permitted and with approval of owner.

BEACH TOWELS: During summer months, use of the pools, lake, and rock slide will require that you provide your OWN beach towels. Bring enough towel to accommodate your stay. Laundry in home.

CHILD SAFETY: There are two staircases, and two decks. A child gate is advisable.

PROPERTY DAMAGE: At time of booking, I will charge a REFUNDABLE damage deposit of $500. I will also offer $3000 of damage protection insurance for a NON-REFUNDABLE $79 fee. The $500 refundable charge is to protect ME, the owner. The $3000 insurance is to protect YOU, the renter. Should damage occur, the charges will first be levied against the $500 REFUNDABLE deposit. Should the damages exceed $500, the charges will next be applied against the $3000 policy.
