Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday apartment in Porto area - Baron Forrester Apartment

2 Bedrooms Apartment, in the historical center of Oporto, with fantastic views

2 Bedrooms Duplex Apartment, enterely renovated in a classified historical building, with very high standing, located in the heart of the historical city of Oporto, with unforgettable views on the Dom Luis Bridge, Douro River from one side, and Palacio da Bolsa, Sao Francisco Church and Infante Dom Henrique Square from the other side.

This apartment is located on the last and 5th floor of a building with an elevator. This building is known as Baron Forrester has spent some time leaving there.

Joseph James Forrester devoted a part of his life in a laborious survey of the River Douro, with a view of improvement of its navigation and a separte map of the port Wine districts, reprinted in England in 1852 by order of a select committee of the House of Commons. He was created Baron de Forrester for life in 1855 by the crown of Portugal, made knight commander of the orders of Christ and Isabella la Catolica, and received the cross of chevalier of various orders of his adopted country.

This Duplex is a real unique diamond in the historical center, with 2 Suites with 2 balconies, one in front of the Infante Dom Henrique Square and the other in front of the Dom Luis Bridge.

Fantastic Rental in Porto

  • 5 of 5

Clean, modern, spacious, and in a perfect location this apartment makes a stay in Porto a wonderful experience. With comfortable furniture and amenities, the views from this top-floor two-level are amazing. Located one block from the waterfront and just a few minutes' walk from everything in old town Porto, I would recommend this rental to everyone. Probably the best apartment rental I've experienced so far and in a city that is now at the top of my favorite places list.

Fabulous property in a great position

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay in Porto in this great apartment. Perfect position just back from the Riviera lots of restaurants and bars nearby though we tended to walk into the city where it was less touristy. The balcony from the master bedroom has wonderful views across the waterfront. Porto was a great city small enough to walk around although a little hilly, helped to walk off the huge meals and pastries! Couldn't see everything in the time we were there so will definitely be back and can't think of anywhere better to stay.

Beautiful apartment in wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was beautiful with modern decor. The location on the riverfront is great with views of the river from the bedroom balcony. It within walking distance of the train station and public transportation. It is on the fifth floor with an elevator to get you there.

Perfect location, killer views

  • 5 of 5

What a comfortable, spacious, well-thought-out apartment, with fantastic views both from the living room and the upstairs bedroom balcony!

We slept in the sunny upstairs bedroom, with its big, comfy bed and wall of windows. At night, we would lie in bed gazing at the romantic lights of the Dom Luis bridge; in the morning, we happily lingered over breakfast on the balcony, enjoying an almost wraparound vantage on the charming city of Porto. The living room has a comfy sectional couch, which is great for putting your feet up at the end of a long day navigating the city's hills. The kitchen is pretty bare bones, so if you want to do anything more ambitious than boil an egg, you have to pick up everything, down to the olive oil, salt and pepper, and paper napkins. But it's great if you're just picking up some things to assemble--juice, fruit, bread and cheese, as we did.

The location cannot be beat, just around the corner from the Ribeira and right across the square from the Palacio da Bolsa. It was an easy 10-minute walk up to the train station, 15 to the open-air food market.

The owner Marc was very quick to respond to all our requests and so patient and helpful with our needs. We flew in on an overnight flight that arrived at 7 am and had to cool our heels til a 1:30 apartment check-in, so his team did everything they could to facilitate an early bag drop-off and key pick-up, which we really appreciated. The on-site folks were very friendly and professional. I highly recommend this property and would come back in a flash!

Wonderful 14 days in Porto

  • 5 of 5

Marc’s beautiful and spacious apartment is the perfect location for two couples to get to know Porto. We stayed 2 weeks; for 1 week we had a 2nd couple join us. Marc was available by phone or email; when he wasn’t able to be present, he would send a family member to take care of things.

There is no washer/dryer. There is a lavanderia 5 minutes west of the apartment, at the west end of Rua de Reboleira just off Rua do Infante Dom Henrique. €5.50 for a large load, including drying and folding!

In Europe, tourist apartments tend to come with plenty of cooking equipment, but no basics like salt, pepper, sugar, oil, etc. There was coffee and a coffeemaker, but no tea or teapot. We enjoyed eating out, except for a couple of light meals on the patio, with its priceless views.

Our vacation theme is “eat, drink wine, walk, repeat”. Porto has plenty of opportunity to do all of those, within 15 minutes of our home base. We spent 90% of our time in old Porto, but took a relaxing river cruise with “Barcadouro” to Peso da Régua, returning on the train. €62.50 per person included continental breakfast and a good lunch, plus the train. The Museu do Douro in Régua is worth a visit.

Essential for foodies: <http://tasteportofoodtours.com>.

The bar just a few metres west of the door was our breakfast hangout. The Italian restaurant 1m away would get 2.5 stars out of 5; we tried it twice. Fave restaurants:

À Grade and Adega de São Nicolau - down the alley to the west

Prova wine bar & tapas, great wine not cheap

Vinhas de Alho, west on the Ribeira - Fado every night, good food

Pipas east on the Ribeira

Taberna do Largo - evenings only; noon on weekends. Petiscos!

Flor dos Congregados

Tascö

D. Luiz, a 15 minute walk, in Gaia

Do go to the Bolhão Market. The Pasteis de Nata (cream tarts) from the padaria at the north-west corner, are the best we had, for the cheapest price! Many good finds here, from dish towels to fresh bread, fruit and fish.

This apartment is inexpensive relative to hotels, and includes TWO bedrooms, TWO bathrooms, a kitchen, living room and dining room. Our damage deposit was returned in full.

Could it be better? Sure: air conditioning (Porto was having a heat wave,) washer/dryer (but I sympathize with the owner, who had pulled the machine after guests had damaged it on two occasions); a few basic food items as noted above (but restaurants are plentiful and interesting… who wants to cook on vacation?)

We would stay again.

Fantastic apartment but ...

  • 4 of 5

There's no doubt this is a wonderful apartment in an absolutely fantastic spot in Porto. It's exceptionally clean, a great size and beautifully appointed. We received wonderful communication and support prior to our arrival which made everything very easy and we had an absolutely super time. I just wish there were some little touches of hospitality in the property. While I know it's not always the case for properties to provide anything extra, we thought this one took not providing anything to extremes, not even providing a full roll of toilet paper in either toilet. I'd rather pay a few Euros more and have a few extras supplied than have to buy absolutely everything I need, especially for a short stay. Did we have a great time? Yes. Was the apartment comfortable and in a perfect position? Absolutely. Did we feel any sense of hospitality during out stay? Not really, although the owner was very accommodating letting us leave our bags in the apartment ahead of our check in time which we really appreciated. So, go for the comfort and the location - it's wonderful. But expect to buy everything you'll need when you arrive because there won't even be a teabag and don't really expect anyone to take an interest in whether you've enjoyed yourself or not. Perhaps that may have been different had the owner himself been available at check in and check out but he wasn't when we were there. One more thing that is worth mentioning is that the doors to the deck off the upstairs bedroom are very difficult to open and close and I think some people would struggle with them which would be a real shame as the views from the deck (and from the living room windows) are really special. It's also essential to get the deck doors open in the evening to cool the bedroom down. If you're not pretty strong, then you'll find that hard to do. The person who did our check in even struggled. So, we loved Porto, we loved the apartment, we had great support from the owner but a few little things mean we're rating it 4 not 5.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your comments and review. I am very happy to hear that you had a wonderful time in my apartment. Concerning the lack of "toilet paper" and other few little things, I will talk to the cleaning lady as this is the first it happens. Mistakes can happen! I am sorry. It is a pity that you did not mentionned this during your stay. Problems can be solved easily when communication is available. I would love to help if I knew! We try to do our best every day!
