Overview

About the property

2 Ensuite Bedrooms (with Aircon), Private Pool, Terraces, Wifi, Stunning Views

Finca las Pasas is a fully modernised and refurbished detached single-storey former farmhouse with authentic Spanish character.

Summer 2017 will be the first time for several years that Finca las Pasas is made available for holiday rentals (hence no reviews).

What sets Finca las Pasas apart from many other villas is the fact that it is walking distance to a lovely village with several restaurants, minimarkets and other local facilities. It also has air-conditioning in both bedrooms, so you are assured of a good night's sleep!

It is decorated, furnished and equipped to a very high standard.

With both bedrooms being ensuite, Finca las Pasas is suitable for two couples holidaying together or a family of four. We can also provide a travel cot if there is a youngster in your party.

The finca offers the following facilities:-

Private pool

Generous terraces around the house and around the pool, with a fully shaded dining area. There is also an upper terrace for hanging out washing.

Spacious entrance hall (with piano!) from which all the bedrooms are accessed

27ft / 9m sitting room with dining area and doors onto the terrace

Large fitted and fully equipped kitchen (oven, hob, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine etc)

1 double bedroom with ensuite shower room and WC

1 twin bedroom (beds are positioned together) with ensuite shower room and WC

Separate family bathroom (incl. bath, bidet & WC).

Both bedrooms have air con and a fan.

[The house has a third bedroom but this is kept locked as it contains the owners' belongings.]

The finca has broadband WiFi, a large flatscreen TV with UK TV channels, DVD player and music system.

Those with mobility problems should be advised that the pool is situated on a separate terrace below the house, accessed via a flight of steps. However the rest of the property, including the parking area is on the same level.

There is a gate from the house and upper terraces to the steps which lead to the pool.

The whole property, including the parking terrace, is gated from the road.

Finca las Pasas is very peaceful and is in a stunning and quiet location without being isolated. There is another holiday property across the road from the finca - and next door, above the finca, is the summer house of a local Spanish family. Finca las Pasas is the last house on a quiet country lane as as such has unimpaired views of the valley below and the layers of mountains in the distance.

Fresh bed linen, towels and tea towels are of course provided for all new guests.

A travel cot and high chair can be provided upon request.

About Catherine Potter

Originally from Lancaster / South Cumbria, Susanne and Catherine bought Finca las Pasas in 2003 as a holiday home and enjoyed visiting several weeks per year. From 2010, the youngsters having departed for university and being self-employed ourselves, we started spending more time in Spain, living between Iznate and Lancaster. As a result Finca las Pasas is better equipped and of better quality than most holiday homes - as it is a home from home for us.

Catherine Potter purchased this farmhouse in 2003

Why Catherine Potter chose Axarquia (Costa del Sol)

We decided to buy a holiday home back in 2003 and chose this corner of Spain for several reasons. One of us spoke a little Spanish (picked up during a back-packing holiday in Central America many years ago!). We wanted to be as far south as possible in mainland Europe to ensure good winters. We wanted to be on the mainland, as we didn't want to be constrained by the limitations of an island. And we had both fallen in love with rural Andalucia and its white villages whilst on holiday here a few years earlier.

When we bought the finca it was operated as a small raisin farm by its owners, who now live on their principal farm at the other side of the valley. Much of 2003 and 2004 was spent fully refurbishing and modernising the house, giving it a new kitchen, converting what had been a semi-outdoor sitting room into a room integrated into the rest of the house, and, most importantly, adding the pool.  We also installed an air-conditioning/heating system, ensuring that one can retreat from the heat during the Spanish summer.

We particularly wanted a property within or on the edge of a community, so that we could experience something of Spanish life first hand - and be walking distance to restaurants and shops. We also wanted a pool, which meant having some land. Combining these two requirements is difficult to achieve in Andalucia because the villages tend to be cut into the hillsides, with properties seemingly built one on top of another, leaving no space for gardens or pools. This small finca therefore proved to be the ideal property, close to a lovely village but within its own grounds. Its elevated position also means that it has unbelievably stunning panoramic views. The final benefit is that it is very private and peaceful - although we do have neighbours, which we think is a benefit from a security perspective.

What makes this farmhouse unique

You will not believe the views from our finca! They are stunning! If you arrive in the dark you will only see the twinkle of near and distant lights. When morning comes you will be thrilled to see the situation of the finca. The view also changes throughout the day, from sunrise to sunset, morning to afternoon, with new shadows revealing the curves and features of the landscape. It was undoubtedly the views that sold the finca to us.

Not many rural properties with views like ours are also walking distance to a village. And not just any village! Iznate is picture postcard perfect in many ways - it is very photogenic - its quaint steep streets, its lovely church and the views from the central plaza. Also, not all the villages in the Axarquia have good restaurants. Some are very touristy, geared entirely to a foreign clientele. Others are perhaps a little too local and not very inviting to a visitor. The restaurants and bars of Iznate have definitely got the balance right, catering to locals, a few expats and holidaymakers, they offer great menu choices at very reasonable prices. Try Agostina's for her BBQ tapas; Bar Andalucia for its pinchitos de cerdo, its wine list and full service menu; Restaurant Tejada (or Alfonsos as it is locally known) for its seafood pil pil, weekend specials and full service menu; and restaurante Los Gatos for its lovely ambiance and its secreto iberico. Also on the edge of the village, just a 5 minute walk from the finca is Meson Rural los Callejones, a lovely full service restaurant with stunning mountain views.

Finca las Pasas and Iznate are also in a great location in that although very much rural, they are very close to the resorts of the coast, to beaches, to the city of Malaga, to the airport and to large supermarkets and shops. Many other villages are much more remote and perhaps a 45 minute drive to facilities.

In our view, our little finca and our lovely village of Iznate are perfect in every way!

Beautiful, peaceful, very comfortable and with amazing views

  • 5 of 5

We have really enjoyed our stay here. The setting is very beautiful with views across the campo to the distant hills. The terraces and pool area work perfectly. The pool, in particular, is well maintained, clear and is pumped regularly throughout the day. Inside the finca, the kitchen is modern, spacious and well equipped . The fridge/ freezer is great and big enough for all your needs. TV, if you want it, has all the regular English channels. Bedrooms are comfy and all have ensuite facilities. The air conditioning is invaluable in making the nights cooler. Overall, the finca was very comfortable. Flies and bugs generally were rarely a problem. Iznate itself is quiet but easily reached by foot or car, and everybody has been really friendly. We have enjoyed the accessibility of the coastal motorway which is only a few miles away. We were able to drive to various other resorts including La Herradura, which is one of our favourite places on the coast. Eroski supermarket is a quarter of an hours drive and is our favourite shopping destination. We also drove to Granada for the Alhambra. Luckily, we had booked in advance as tickets were sold out on the day (early June!). We drove over the Zaffaraya pass- unmissable! All in all, we would love to return here one day. Happy memories!

In a beautiful setting, rustic and original Spanish features but with modern facilities

  • 4 of 5

The finca itself lived up to our expectations, a lovely view from the pool area and terrace. Everything you needed was there. Entrance to the finca was on quite a steep slope so good driving skills are needed. Cleanliness was generally good, just the fridge needed some attention. Bedrooms were clean & comfortable, plenty of hot water. We really enjoyed our holiday there and would recommend it to anyone who wants a relaxing break.

Vacaciones en familia, tranquilidad y descanso

  • 5 of 5

Finca las Pasas (Raisin Farmhouse) is situated on the edge of the historic 'pueblo blanco' (white village) of Iznate in the Axarquia region of Andalucia. The centre of the village is a 15 minute (but very hilly) walk from the Finca.

Iznate (pronounced Eez-na-tay) is a small town originally founded by the Moors, with a population of circa 900. It is one of the prettiest villages in the Axarquia, still very traditional in many ways, and offers a warm welcome to holidaying visitors.

The village is in an elevated position giving it splendid views over this part of the Axarquia. The houses seem to be piled up on top of each other, taking advantage of the natural slope of the terrain, and many of the village's windy lanes are inaccessible by car. At the centre of the village is a XVI century church and a plaza around which 4 restaurants and bars offer a mouthwatering selection of the local gastronomy. Local specialities include pinchitos de cerdo / gambas (pork or prawn kebabs), gambas pil pil (spicy prawns), boquerones (anchovies in vinager), secreto iberico (the tenderest cut of pork), ternera con pasas (beef with raisins) and Vino Dulce (the local fortified wine fermented from the raisins of the local Moscatel grape). Iznate also has a post office, mini-markets, a bank, a tobacconist and other village facilities. We are fortunate in having a particularly attractive and welcoming restaurant less than a five minute walk from the finca, adjacent to a tennis court which our visitors are welcome to use.

Iznate is a 5 minute drive inland from the arterial A7 / E-15 motorway running along the length of the Spanish Mediterranean coast. It is less than 15 minutes to the coastal towns of Torre del Mar, Benajarafe and Rincon de la Victoria, holiday destinations enjoyed mainly by Spanish visitors. Both Torre and Rincon have wonderful promenades, dotted with countless beachside restaurants, enjoyed seemingly by all the town's inhabitants, young and old, late into the evening - a simply great family outing - and so uniquely Spanish.  Indeed a recent young visitor to the finca in August described both Torre and Rincon as 'children's paradises' because of the facilities and amusements laid on for young people in the summer season!  Benajarafe is much smaller and less-developed, with just 10 or so restaurants alongside a beautiful beach, for those who prefer a quieter seaside ambiance.

Iznate is 15 minutes from the Moorish city of Velez-Malaga which, amongst its many facilities, has a museum and several churches, a theatre, a water park and a large indoor shopping centre incorporating a hypermarket and a variety of fashion shops.

Nerja, an attractive low-rise tourist resort, is just a 20 minute drive away. As well as its beaches, Nerja is known for its magnificent cave complex which is open to visitors. There is also a geologically significant cave complex which can be visited at Rincon de la Victoria.

If you love cities, then Malaga is less than a 30 minute drive. It is a very attractive city known for its tapas bars, art galleries (especially the Picasso Museum and Pompidou Centre), parks, waterfront and monuments from the Phonoecian, Roman, Moorish, Renaissance and 19th century periods of its history. A visit to Malaga is a very enjoyable day or evening out.

Many of our visitors also choose to visit the cities of Granada (with its Alhambra), Ronda, Antequera and Cordoba during their stay - all day trips.

A 30 minute drive from Finca las Pasas is possibly the loveliest river canyon walk you will ever experience. The Rio Chillar walk is very popular with all ages during the summer months as it is stunningly beautiful, has several places where you can bathe, offers plenty of shade and also paddling through the cool water keeps temperatures down!

The owners of the finca have partnered with a number of local service providers who offer our guests such spa treatments as massages, reiki and yoga (at the finca) - and can also take you horse-riding, teach you Spanish or even flamenco dancing!

The Costa del Sol has become famous for its sprawling tourist ghettos to the west of Malaga.  But the initiated have long known that inland Andalucia and the coastline to the east of Malaga is a world away from all of that!

So a holiday at Finca las Pasas offers the best of all worlds – traditional rural Spain, magnificent countryside with some amazing hiking, close to the coast and beaches, historical city visits and, if you are really craving some more mainstream tourism, then Nerja and Frigiliana are just a short hop in the car.
