About Wendy Waghorn
Graham and I loved this area of Devon and had a holiday apartment in Bigbury, we had renovated 3 or 4 other properties, so when the Manor House and barns came up for Auction we couldn't resist it. It really is a beautiful area. It has been hard work, but very rewarding and it is great seeing guests faces when they arrive as it has a real WOW factor. Graham's background is TV and film. He worked for the BBC as a Director of Photography and Cameraman on Films and TV for over 25 years. My background was Fashion Buying for 20 years, with a switch over to Interiors Buying and Desisn.
Why Wendy Waghorn chose Staverton
The brilliant things about this property are the fact that you are tucked away in a small quiet lane yet close enough to the A38 to be able to jump on it and travel around easily (avoiding the narrow country lanes). Plus you are in the middle of countryside and beside Dartmoor, but also very close to the Coast and some beautiful harbours. The history of the building is amazing. Beams galore!
What makes this Barn unique
The great thing is we have plenty of space, and so my daughter, and grandchildren can stay whenever they like. My grandson loves it so much he has visited on every school holiday so far. My grand daughter stayed 4 times during the last Summer holidays. They love all the coastal areas, and wild horses.

A little slice of Devon
Well located for East Devon. Just off A38 which makes coast and the moors very accessible. We even headed to Cornwall for a day. Although near the road, Milk Churn is very quiet. Property is very clean, modern and well kitted out. Loads of DVDs for when TV has repeats and you want to get away from depressing news programs. Having the heating on for us after a wet and windy day on Dartmoor was especially welcome. Strongly recommended.
Very nice barn conversion
Milk Churn Cottage is really cosy and is very nicely furnished and equipped. Location ideal for exploring the area. We had a great week. Wendy was lovely, making sure everything was ok and suggesting places to visit and where to eat. Would have been 5 stars but for the A38 being close by (obviously, there is nothing Wendy can do about that of course !!) - not a problem at all when in the barn due to the thick walls, but a little bit too noisy for us when sitting out in the courtyard. This did not detract in any way though from us having a lovely stay.
Got lots of writing done!
We had a really comfortable week's stay at Milk Churn Cottage this Easter. The high vaulted ceiling in the kitchen/lounge area gave a light and spacious feel to the accommodation. Everything was clean and well maintained, beds comfy and shower really good too. Wendy couldn't have been more helpful. It's easy to switch off with so many lovely Dartmoor walks on our doorstep - again Wendy recommended some excellent ones nearby, along with dog-friendly gasto-pubs. Riverford Organics cafe and farm shop (called Ben's) are only a couple of minutes drive away so perfect for stocking up on quality provisions. The close proximity to the A38 didn't trouble me at all - the birdsong drowned out much of the road noise! The wifi was a bit hit and miss though so I needed to get a dongle to aid my research and writing, so I'd recommend that if you need reliable connection. Other than that I can highly recommend Mick Churn Cottage and would be glad to return some day soon.
Vielen Dank liebe Wendy.
We had a lovely time, thank you!
We had a lovely time staying in Milk Churn Cottage. It really is very conveniently located if you want to explore the area, within reach of lovely towns, coast and the moor.
We were made very welcome, toys and books had been put out especially for our three girls, they particularly love the dressing up things. I expected their bedroom to be cramped as we needed an extra bed in there but it was lovely and cosy, nice bedding and the 'spare' bed was very good quality and comfortable. Our bedroom was lovely too, very prettily decorated. With three little ones it was great to have a bath and a shower, although the shower screen did make it a little awkward to bath two at the same time.
Upstairs is a great open plan area, it was nice to be all together. The decor is lovely and there are was plenty of space for five of us. I was a little concerned about the rugs, I think they need a non-slip backing, just to be sure there are no accidents. We did find the TV a bit tricky to operate. Maybe a page could be added to the cottage manual? However it was quite nice to have a break from TV!
The little kitchen is fairly well equipped, nice big fridge/freezer. As a larger group we were using up the crockery quite quickly so it was good always have hot water and of course the dishwasher! I did find the area a bit dark. If there were anyway of adding a bit more light that would be really beneficial for the cook!
We enjoyed using the courtyard and the girls had fun with the outdoor games equipment. We really appreciated the tips that Wendy gave us on where to walk and also tipping us off about Teignmouth beach. We had a lovely day there, it was really convenient as we parked just behind the beach and there were toilets close by. Wendy told us there was a park, cafe and shops nearby too but the girls wanted to spend all day on the beach! The other lovely beach day we had was at Bigbury, only about 40 mins away.
All in all we had a lovely holiday.
Many thanks for your very kind remarks, I am so glad you all had such an enjoyable holiday. We would have happily explained the TV remote if you had asked. The Barn kitchen has high beams and we have 4 spotlights on the beam aimed at the worktop, 3 worktop unit lights, and an oven light over the hob, so I think that is very good lighting, plus a window in the kitchen.
It is great that we can offer such a safe area for children to play.
I do hope you get the chance to visit us again, your family will be made most welcome.
Kind regards, Wendy
Lovely well equipped cottage with easy access to dartmoor and the coast
A lovely cottage, very well equipped and travel cot, high chair and stair gate all provided for our baby. Big open plan kitchen / sitting room. Good sized bedrooms and comfortable bed. The bathroom is a good size and great with a baby as it has a bath. The bathroom is the only part of the cottage that didn't quite meet the high standard of the rest of the property, just slightly tired looking compared to the rest. We would definitely return for another stay here in the future though!
Nice outdoor area and lots of parking. Outdoor games provided too.
Good location if you want to split time between dartmoor and the south coast.
Many thanks for your superb review, we are so pleased you had a good holiday, and you would like to return. You would be made very welcome.
We had a few days gap between a booking, so we gave the bathroom a facelift, to make sure it was up to our impeccable standards. To keep the Barn in the pristine condition that we insist on, we are constantly doing maintenance and repairs. Many thanks again for your kind comments.
Best wishes, Wendy and Graham.
