About the property

House in Roussillon for 8 people with Air Conditioning and Heated Swimming Pool

La Bergerie Provençale is set amidst the villages, vineyards, and orchards of Provence’s renowned Luberon national park.

Originally a 200 year old stone ‘Bergerie’ or shepherds house, the property has been extended and renovated to create a stunning and luxury villa within one hectare of gated private gardens with a very large 6x12 meter heated swimming pool.

Approached along a tree-lined drive, the house is situated in the beautiful countryside of the Luberon and is surrounded on all sides by vineyards, farmland and woodland with beautiful uninterrupted views of the village of Roussillon, one of France’s acclaimed ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France’.

Located in the very heart of the Luberon valley, the house is within easy driving distance of the areas most famous hilltop ‘perched’ villages, markets and restaurants including Gordes, Menerbes, Lacoste, Bonnieux with the local village of Roussillon only 3 minutes drive away.

The House has been designed to be a very comfortable and stylish home away from home. When you arrive you will be greeted by our English, French and German speaking house manager who will introduce to the house and its facilities.

There are four large double bedrooms opening out onto the shaded terrace overlooking the pool. Two of the bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms with baths and separate showers. The third and fourth bedrooms share a third separate bathroom equipped with bath and shower.

All bedrooms are fitted with Air Conditioning for your comfort.

The kitchen is well equipped with dishwasher, American fridge freezer, oven and microwave. A spacious separate utility room comes equipped with washing machine and drying area.

The house is naturally cool in summer and has under-floor heating and a large open fireplace in the living room for the cooler months.

The lounge has a large LCD television and DVD player with a wide range of satellite channels including all of the UK freeview channels including the childrens channels. Guests are welcome to use the iPod compatible sound dock and wireless broadband internet access.

Linen, towels and pool towels are included together with a cleaning service on departure.

Outside the gardens extend to one hectare containing a mixture of lawns, oak woodland and orchard. The heated south facing 6x12m swimming pool is reached by winding stone paths and is surrounded by a grassed area for sunbathing. The pool is accessed by security gate and is fitted with the latest automatic cover to ensure the safety of your family.

Sun loungers are provided as well as a lavish 3x3 metre outside L-shaped sofa for relaxing by the pool. Directly next to the pool terrace is the outdoor summer kitchen, this is equipped with a large BBQ. Another totally separate outside dining area is located in a grove of oak trees under a vine covered pergola.

'Spacious comfortable accommodation

  • 5 of 5

We travelled with our two adult children and partners and three year old grandson. The accommodation meant we all had our own sleeping and bathroom space away from the living area. The garden was large, a mix of grass area and flowering bushes near the house and pool and wild spring flower areas beyond to the climbing frame. Yet all visible from the covered outdoor table and pool area so we could keep an eye on the exploring child. Thank you for providing the toys for him, much enjoyed. Facilities were excellent, and Christian a great manager. He was ready to fit with our timetable and quick to respond to a BBQ malfunction. Plenty of china and cutlery, good cooking facilities and a fully functional utility area with soaps and dishwasher tablets provided, plus spare towels and bed linen if needed. We were able to enjoy our walking from the house through spring flowers, and blossom on fruit tees, neat vineyards and lavender fields. The youngsters walked as far as the Tara vineyard. You do need a car. Within short drives were many good venues, markets, hilltop towns with history, views and good eateries. We visited the Villages Des Boiries and Senaques Abbey , both good value. We saw wild boar and deer in the garden, plus butterflies and many birds- red kite, buzzards, hoopoe amongst them. On our walks we also saw a snake catch a mouse, and large roman snails in romantic attachments . The weather was great so we did not light the indoor fire, and the only down side was that in mid April the pool was not really warm enough to swim - the young adult males braved it but the rest of us just cooled our feet and splashed. However Neil had warned us and still got the pool team in to attempt to get it warm. All agreed that we would like to visit again - if the family doesn’t expand too much to fit !

Amazing house in a fantastic area!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to Provence and we have to say we loved it!

The house is perfectly located in the centre of the Luberon and we had trouble tearing ourselves away from the Pool each day to visit all the beautiful villages nearby.

We travelled as a family with two small children and found the house absolutely perfect for our needs. The owners provided High Chairs and Cots and the Security Cover on the Pool meant we could sunbathe and read our books without having to watch the little ones every move.

The house is located at the end of a very quiet private lane with no neighbours making it extremely quiet and private.

Although we ate out regularly we found the kitchen and BBQ to be well equipped for the dinners and lunches we prepared ourselves.

All the bedrooms are of a good size and the large Master Suite was a very pleasant surprise.

We have already booked to stay again next year!

Even better than we hoped...

  • 5 of 5

After a mammoth journey where lack of sleep the previous week led to matchstick propped eyelids that required 2 hourly Autoroute espresso top up's to keep the show on the road in one piece, we finally got within a few kilometres of La Bergerie Provencal. Our tired hearts soared when we saw the landscape of hills, red sand and pines lit by the orange early evening sun. The beautiful hilltop town of Gordes passed by and we descended with Roussillon in our sights.....then we got lost. No matter, spirits were high as we doubtfully drove into a small lane that after a few houses seemed to go nowhere. Just a bit further and ready to do a U-TURN the kids shouted 'thats it!'. Thank God...we crunched up the drive beyond the gates with relief, and knew we'd made a good choice before we'd set a foot on the ground....

Simple, stylish and traditional décor in the house makes you feel at home immediately. Each bedroom has its own character, lovely ensuite bathrooms and comfy linen.. Cosy lounge, lovely sofa's and DVD's for when your 14yrold Netflix Junkie son needs some screen time, although with a pool and garden as lovely as La Bergerie's, even he didn't feel the need for three days straight!

More than enough towels, crockery, cooking equipment etc...nice filter coffee machine and big fridge with water filter and ice dispenser to keep your Rosé chilled...Even a BBQ Nitwit like me managed a fine steak or two on the gas burner that sits out on the terrace...best holiday we've had in years. If only we could have turned down the volume of the Cicadas, Jeez! Thanks Neil and Mel..

TIcks all the boxes!

  • 5 of 5

I saw the photos online and could hardly believe that this place was going to be as good as it looked - but it was! We were a party of 4 adults and 2 children, aged 4 and 18 months respectively. The accommodation is both private and flexible, so that it would suit almost any combination of guests. There is plenty of space so that we never felt on top of one another and plenty of room in the garden for the children to run around (when they weren't in the pool!). The children's play area was an added bonus. The pool is something else-graduated and with steps at the shallow end for the children but large enough and deep enough for adults too. The setting is fabulous and it was a real treat to open the bedroom doors onto the garden and pop into the pool for an early morning dip. Rousillion with its supermarket, pretty shops and restaurants is only a few minutes (uphill) drive away but the villa itself is in a very rural position with no noise or light pollution. Christian, the house manager is both charming and multilingual and was able to conjure up a plumber at short notice when we had a problem with one of the showers. What's not to like? We're hoping to book again for next year.......

Where do you live?

A peaceful slice of Provence

  • 4 of 5

Allow mw to start this review by saying La Provencal Bergerie, Hameau Du Trabail, Roussillon is a lovely house with a beautiful, private pool and a spacious yard and that I would recommend it to almost everyone. If you're looking for a very comfortable house to crash at night, this is your place. However, and here's the rub, if your looking for something that feels like a home, a place where meals can be prepared and tables can be set this might not be the right place for you.

Pros: Location, location, location. I can't tell you how many day trip locations were within a 30 minute drive. Very comfortable beds. Wonderful sofas for those evenings when it's just a bit chilly for the patio. Beautiful heated pool, (though we were visiting during a cool snap and even with the water at 83 degrees it was a bit too cold.)

Cons. Towels. We were provided with one bath towel per person. No wash clothes, hand towels or bath mats. And the big fail, at least for our group, were the wine glasses. Tiny 6 or 8 ounce wine glasses were all they had to offer. We poured over wines to bring home for dinner each evening and the wine glasses were just pathetic.

Please take this review not as a condemnation of the property but instead our failing to find exactly what we were looking for. As I said. I would recommend the property to almost anyone.

Owner's Response: Bob, thank you for your review, we are glad that you enjoyed your stay. Each guest is supplied with one Bath Towel, One Pool Towel and a Hand Towel. We are not sure that guests would want to use face / wash cloths if we supplied them and in our experience this is the kind of personal item most people bring themselves. It is great that you were enjoying the local wines and apologies for the wine glasses being too small for you. These are very normal bistro glasses that are used all across France and they have the benefit of fitting in the dishwasher which I know is convenient for guests. I am afraid the best course of action may be to just keep refilling them regularly with those great local wines! We look forward to welcoming you again soon! Melanie & Neil

Perfection in Provence

  • 5 of 5

We cannot recommend this place highly enough - in over a decade of holidaying every year in the Luberon this is the best place we have found. It combines a stunning interior with a lovely garden and pool area. It is in grounds large enough to offer complete privacy and solitude but with a village just a few minutes drive away with a bakery, butcher and a good choice of places to eat. Well situated for many of the fantastic markets and for anyone who is a wine lover the options are endless. We are returning for our third stay next year.

Roussillon is located in the heart of the Luberon’s 'Golden Triangle' formed by the medieval hilltop villages of Gordes, Bonnieux, Lourmarin, Lacoste, Menerbes (featured in Peter Mayle's 'Year in Provence') and Oppede-le-Vieux, all of which are within 10-20 minutes drive.

The medieval village hides a picturesque maze of streets and squares, full of charming restaurants and art galleries. If you walk to the top of the village you will see wonderful panoramic views across the valley to the Grand Luberon, the slopes of Mont Ventoux, and the plateau of the Vaucluse.

The Luberon is considered to be the heart of Provence and the house is a perfect base to explore Avignon, Aix en provence, Orange and Arles all within an hours drive. The closest beach is located an hour's away at Cassis which has a fine sandy beach just outside the port, the Plage de la Grande mer. The French Riviera is two hours away.

It is a one hour drive to the international airports at Marseille and Nimes. The high speed TGV train service stops at Avignon is also one hour from the house.
