The cottage was built in 1640 & has the added attraction of ships timbers & beamed ceilings throughout & like the other Fishermen’s Cottages, as you enter you get the feeling of stepping back in time where the men made their living from fishing or smuggling.

This unique cottage offers 2 bedrooms, and can comfortably sleep 4 people. The main bedroom has a king size bed and the second bedroom has a bunk bed. You will also find a fully equipped kitchen with a breakfast bar and seating 4 persons. The lounge has a television with DVD. WI-FI is included. If this is required please advice us in advance and we will be happy to arrange this for you prior to your arrival. There is also free parking on the Eastern Esplanade which again is only a minutes walk away.

Broadstairs has been voted THE BEST SEASIDE TOWN in the south east to come and stay.

There are seven golden sandy beaches to visit, these include Viking bay, Joss bay, Botany bay and there are smaller more secluded beaches if you prefer.

About PHIL DENNIS

I was very lucky to be born in Broadstairs and I have lived here all my life.

Barnaby's Lodge was one of the first houses to be built in this lovely town.

I am a builder and have lovingly restored this unique cottage to it's former glory.

Why PHIL DENNIS chose Kent

Steeped in history this cottage was built in 1680 and was used by the smugglers. There is still the secret door in the lounge that they used to escape from the custom officers. Parts of this cottage are built out of chalk blocks carved out of the local cliffs with flint and ships timbers, really anything they could find on the beach.

This cottage is situated in the best position nice and quite and just a stone throw from Viking Bay, you could not wish to be any closer, with all the shops and restaurants on your door step.

What makes this cottage unique

It's such a cosy cottage, you can not help falling in love with it and there is a small secure garden with a patio table and chairs.

Everything is on your doorstep no need to use your car.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Couldn't have been happier. Lovely little cottage, great location, everything we needed for a relaxing weekend. Kids were really happy there and Phil was responsive, friendly and helpful. Thanks.

Broadstairs is lovely but this house is significantly over-priced

  • 3 of 5

Our family has visited Broadstairs many times: we love the place. Over the years it has become increasingly popular. We stayed in Barnaby's Cottage a few years ago, when it was a bargain. Now, the price has rocketed up and it represents very poor value. Its small and the equipment is very basic. Poor quality bedding, an absolute minimum of cooking stuff, no shower curtain, etc.

Yet the price is very high. Very, very poor value for money. We won't be staying there again.

Great little cottage in the heart of Broadstairs.

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay. The cottage had everything we needed. The great location does mean that it is quite noisy in the evenings as Broadstairs enjoys a lively nightlife. We were only there at the weekend so it might be quieter during the week. We were a bit surprised by some friends of the owner arriving on Saturday and expecting the property to be empty. That was a bit awkward but I would hope that was a one-off.

Owner's Response: Hi Virginia. Thank you for your review and I do apologise, the owner had come down for the weekend and thought the cottage was empty after I had told him it wasn't free until Monday. As for the nightlife yes it can be lively as some venues have music on a Friday night but this normally finishes about 11 O'clock. So pleased you had a great stay and look forward to seeing you again! Kind regards. Phil.

Owner's Response: Dear Moira Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. I was very surprised and alarmed to read your negative comments about the cleanliness of the cottage as our cleaner is extremely meticulous and experienced in her work. We really take great pride in the high standard of our cleanliness of the cottage and have only ever received positive comments about this from customers in the past. Following your comments I have now inspected every item in the cottage and renewed a few that were slightly worn . Kind regards Phil

Great location

Barnaby's Lodge was well equipped and it is just the best location for a stay in Broadstairs. I would recommend the phone ordering and delivery service available from The Old Curiosity Shop!

Come to Sunny Broadstairs

The loveliest seaside town in the South East of England

The Fishermen’s Cottages

The cottage is situated in the picturesque town of Broadstairs on the South East Coast of England.

You will find Barnaby's Lodge grade 2 listed, in a quiet courtyard in the old part of town. The Fisherman's Cottage is also grade 2 listed and is in the set in a courtyard adjacent.

Both properties are within easy access to the beach, local shops restaurants, bistros & wine bars which are all only a minute’s walk away.

A lovely atmosphere has been created in both of the cottages, Barnaby's Lodge was built in the 1600's and The Fisherman's Cottage was built in 1860 and both have been completely refurbished & tastefully decorated in traditional design in keeping with the style of each building.

Both of the cottages has the added attraction of beamed ceilings throughout, but as you enter each cottage you get the feeling of stepping back in time to those days when Broadstairs was a fishing town & the men made their living from fishing, boat building or smuggling!

Each Cottage has 2 bedrooms, & can comfortably sleep four people & comes complete with a fully equipped kitchen, lounge, Bath and shower room .

The Fisherman's Cottage has washing machine and a laundry service is available for Barnaby's Lodge at an additional charge if required.

We have endeavoured to ensure that your stay here in Broadstairs is both comfortable & enjoyable so hopefully you will want to return again!

Parking is available in the main car park across the road, & we can purchase a permit for you for £50.00 for 7 days, which allows you to park in other car parks around the isle.

If you require a permit please advise us in advance with you car registration number & we will be happy to arrange this for you prior to your arrival.

All properties are available throughout the year enabling you to visit the area outside the main holiday season, or for a short break if desired.

Come and stay in one of our four 17th & 18th century grade 2 listed cottages in the heart of Broadstairs.

Pets are welcome in Barnaby's, even they need a holiday too!

Whatever your pleasure…come and enjoy some Broadstairs treasure!

You will be guaranteed a warm and friendly welcome whenever you come to Broadstairs. This picturesque town has a special atmosphere all of its own. Originally a small fishing hamlet, the towns ancient maritime past is nowhere more clearly seen, than in the huddle of cottages, old customs house & 16th century weather boarded boat house which nestle around the harbour.

Broadstairs other major industry was Smuggling!

Daniel Defoe noted that, of the 300 habitants, 27

were fishermen & the others had no visible means of

support. Barnaby's Lodge was just one of

those cottages used by the smugglers. The beauty of

Broadstairs is not only stunning beaches, but a vast

mixture of shops, galleries, museums, & shows.

An excellent selection of pubs, restaurants, bistros & take aways you can experience; Italian, Mexican, Indian, Thai, Chinese, or traditional English food all within easy distance from your choice of accommodation.

If shopping is your pleasure, drive out to the new shopping centre at

Westwood Cross, just five minutes away, where you will find the large

department stores, or visit Historical Canterbury which is only 30

minutes away by car or train. The town is served well by bus, road &

rail.

If you enjoy the outdoor life, then experience a Viking Coastal Trail.

Winding your way through beaches, historic villages to where the

history of England really began!

The charm & heritage of Broadstairs has captivated generations of visitors, with popular events which are celebrated with great enthusiasm such as Dickens Week.

A colourful array of characters in period costumes re-enact the old days & bring history alive by one of England’s greatest writers Charles Dickens.

Another example is Folk Week, where the whole town comes alive &

bursts into music, dancing, & torchlight parades, bringing visitors from

all over the world. Folk Week celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015.

Other attractions also include: Water Gala, Air Show, Sailing Regatta,

Horse Shows, Beer & Food Festivals, Power Boat Show plus so much

more, something for the whole family, whatever your age.

Relax & enjoy the view of the harbour, from the Bandstand with live

music where you can see the fishermen setting off to make their living

on the high seas of the English Channel.
