In central Greece, in a two hour distance from both Athens and Thessaloniki and only 10 km from Sourpi’s road intersection, in the national road Athens-Thessaloniki is the coastal village of Amaliapoli, at first Mitzela, which was founded by “captains” in 1827. These captains were chased away from their village, named “Mitzela” in eastern Pelion, because they fought against Turks with 32 ships. They chose to settle in this blessed wind protected bay, with the famous by Homer, Kikynthos island at the entrance of the bay.
The village was named Amaliapoli, in 1839, after Amalia, the first Queen of Contemporary Greece, who together with the King visited the village and was amazed by the harmony of the landscape and the sea-mountain combination, as the settlement is partly located on a hill. She personally stressed that the newly established village should have a street plan of European standards, a pioneer idea for the time, designed by the Bavarian architect Birmbach and the Saxon architect ERNST Ziller, who later acquired the Greek citizenship. Also, Queen Amalia founded a school, Port Authorities and Customs .
The transcendent beauty of Amaliapoli-Mitzela displays to the visitors who do not rush to leave, but spend time to discover it. Many lacy beaches offer the opportunity for a variety of activities such as fishing, swimming and excursions.
The “Transfiguration of Christ” Church has a marble temple which was carved by the world-famous sculptor Giannoulis Chalepas and finished in 1857. Russian monks in 1920, after the Asia Minor catastrophy, carried in Amaliapolis the sacred icon of the “Panagia Eleoussa” and the village celebrates her honor in the “Sunday of All Saints” Day.
Pelion mountain is opposite the village and the lights of the mountain settlements can been seen in the night by Amaliapoli, making a very beautiful scenery. The beaches in the Bay of Volos are close and it only takes less than 30 minutes to reach them with a power boat. If someone chooses a bigger trip, he can reach Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos islands in 1 hour, while Nies is located in a less than 10 minutes distance. You can also escape to “Othry” the neighboring mountain range with many spots of interest as the beautiful vegetation, unique sites with gushing water and the one thousand years old monastery “Panagia Xenia”.
You can go for shopping in Volos or Larissa, both about 45 minutes drive. In the night you can enjoy your drink at the beach bars or eat fresh fish and seafood, fished by local fishermen, in the restaurants, looking at the lightened chapel in islet “Kikynthos” always having as a background the lights of the villages at the eastern site of the legendary mountain of the Centaurs, Pelion.
Because of its central geographical position, Amaliapoli is chosen as a starting point for nature excursions. And it is not a coincidence that from this specific point, two mythical heroes started their military campaigns. Jason of the Argonauts and Achilles, the son of Zeus for Legendary Troy.
