About half an hour's drive from Puna is the Akaka Falls State Park. Akaka Falls is the second tallest waterfall in Hawaii and is well worth a visit.

Hawaii has only two seasons, summer from May to September and winter from October to April. However, the temperatures do not vary too much with average highs of about 29 to 30 degrees centigrade in the summer and 24 to 25 degrees in the winter. June and July are generally the driest months of the year. Visitors should pack warmer clothing if they intend to head up in to the mountains on the Big Island.
