Things to do

-Museums. New York is at the vanguard when it comes to museums. Perhaps the most prestigious is the Metropolitan Museum of Art, boasting massive collections of anything from the Dutch masters to Ancient Egyptian art. The Guggenheim is a sight in its own right, while science is represented by the Transit Museum in Brooklyn and the American Museum of Natural History.

But among the many landmarks are the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, Times Square, Central Park and the Rockefeller Plaza. There are all kinds of ways to takes these sights in – by bus, boat, air or even on guided walking tours.

-Shopping. Any conceivable budget, style or taste is catered for in New York City. For upmarket shoppers 5th Avenue is a byword for luxur. Meanwhile SoHo and the Meatpacking district tend to be hip and trendy, home to all kinds of independent shops and art galleries, as is the Nolita area, known for its stylish boutiques.

-Entertainment. Broadway is synonymous with theatre, and more specifically musicals. New York is home to a staggering array of venues, both on and off-Broadway. In the summer the Shakespeare in the Park performances are especially popular, and tend to feature major Hollywood stars. High-brow institutions include the New York Philharmonic, New York Ballet and New York Opera.

-Dining. New York is the spiritual home of a variety of dishes and snacks, like hot dogs, bagels, pizza, not to mention cheesecake and deli food. Surely every world cuisine is represented in the city, and of course, you can find clusters of certain styles in distinct areas - think Little Italy and Chinatown.

Weather in New York City

New York is set in a humid-subtropical climate zone. Here there’s quite a big difference between winter lows and summer highs. Winters tend to be cold, with temperatures routinely dropping below freezing from around December to February. Spring and autumn weather is usually changeable, bringing highs that for the most part rest around the mid-teens. Arrive at a holiday home in New York in summer and you’ll experience consistently warm and humid weather - maximum temperatures in July and August are in the upper-20s or low 30s. Rainfall doesn’t fluctuate too much from season to season, though spring weather can be damp.

Travel to New York City

As the USA’s largest city, New York has a transport network to match. To get around most tourists will use the subway system, which is quick and efficient. There are also commuter trains – the Metro-North Railroad and the Long Island Railroad - which serve New York’s suburbs. By road you can travel on the affordable bus system, or via the iconic yellow taxis. If you’re reaching your New York apartment from overseas, there are three major international airports in the New York – JFK and La Guardia (LGA) in the Borough of Queens, and Newark, to the west of the city.

Excellent

Four of us stayed in Rose's apartment in March. It is very well located, only one block from Penn Station so getting to and from the airport was super easy. On Rose's recommendation we took the Airtrain from Newark. It took less than an hour and the walk from the station to the apartment is about 5 minutes. There is also a subway at Penn Station so getting around is really easy. Although I would suggest walking as you get to enjoy the city that way. The apartment is with in walking distance of many of the main attractions. The apartment is very comfortable and was lovely and warm. We arrived just after the snowstorms so this was very welcome. There is also plenty of hot warm. The kitchen is well equipped if you would like to cook. We got breakfast from a local deli and this worked perfectly for us. Rose was really easy to correspond with and was very helpful with suggestions of where to eat etc. I would highly recommend staying in this apartment. It has everything you could need for a great stay in New York City.

Hugely enjoyed our stay. Steve took care to see us installed, dealt quickly and efficiently with our queries, and provided us with a fully equipped apartment that had all the features and comforts required to make our stay perfect. Would not hesitate to recommend the apartment to future guests.
