Make a holiday villa in Lake Placid your home away from home
Also known as 'The Town of Murals' and ""The Caladium Capital of the World', holiday rentals in Lake Placid site you slap bang in the middle of Florida, perfectly placed to enjoy all the state has to offer. Located about an hour's drive from either coast, Lake Placid holiday villas or apartments are nearly all convenient for fishing, tennis and golf, and come equipped with washer/dryers, dishwashers, DVD players and satellite/cable TV. Most are family friendly but note that not every rental in Lake Placid comes furnished with air-conditioning; with so much water around, however, temperatures are somewhat moderate compared to other inland subtropical climates.
Things to do
-Nature: At Kissimmee Prairie Preserve & State Park, 54,000 acres of prairie land can be explored on foot, or by bike or horseback. Overnight camping, both primitive and regular is available if you want to see how big and bright the stars can be unobscured by civilisation's light pollution.
-Watersports: There's no need to travel the hour to either coast for water sports, as the massive 730-square-mile Lake Okeechobee is conveniently close to your Lake Placid rental accommodation. Jet skiing, waterskiing, boating and fishing are all available, as is the levee hike and bike trail for those who want to stay dry.
-Beaches: At an hour's drive from either coast, Lake Placid apartments and villas offer the opportunity to take in both sides of Florida, from the Gulf Coast beaches to the Space Coast on the Atlantic, which of course gives you the chance to visit all the NASA attractions.
-Nightlife: Choices are somewhat limited for letting your hair down, but there are a few decent eateries if you want to experience a little local culture. Jaxson's Bar & Grill has a pleasant screened-in patio overlooking the lake, while a couple of BBQ joints can introduce you to the signature American meal outside of the usual list of chain restaurants.
-Golf: With two golf courses in Lake Placid itself, a town of less than 2,000 people, there's ample opportunity for tee time. Nearby Sebring has a multitude of courses, so you'll never be short of a round or two only a very short drive away.
Weather in Lake Placid
Surrounded by so many lakes and wetland areas, Lake Placid enjoys a moderate to hot climate year-round, rarely reaching mid-30°C during the summer, and sitting at mid-20°C during the winter. Water heats up and cools down much more slowly than land, which explains why Florida is often actually cooler during the summer and warmer during the winter than states further north. Precipitation is concentrated in the summer months, chiefly as heavy thunderstorms.
Travel to Lake Placid
The best airport options are Orlando International at 102 miles away, and Tampa International, at 116. Miami International Airport is also a doable commute at 150 miles, especially if you hire your own car, which is frankly the only effective way to holiday in Florida: taxis are expensive, and public transport is almost nonexistent. Being without a car means you may find yourself stuck in a place where the automobile is a necessity rather than a luxury.
