Make a holiday villa in Lake Okeechobee your home away from home
Located in the heart of the Everglades and on the shores of Florida's largest freshwater lake, holiday accommodation in Lake Okeechobee is ideally sited for access to major airports, the fun of Orlando's amusement parks, and the extensive white beaches of Florida's Atlantic coast. NASA's Cape Canaveral is also only a short drive away, which means the majority of Florida's attractions are right on the doorstep of Lake Okeechobee holiday rentals. Most Lake Okeechobee apartments and villas come with air-conditioning and a BBQ facility, so guests can equally enjoy the indoors and outdoors. Some are family friendly and have access to a pool, and have satellite or cable TV for relaxing evenings after a day on the lake.
Things to do
-Watersports: When the location is in the Everglades, and with Lake Okeechobee accommodation right by the largest lake in Florida, it's no surprise how prevalent watersports are. From fishing to boating and kayaking to jet skiing, almost every waterborne passion can be addressed by the numerous marinas found close by.
-Nature: Of course, the Everglades are an iconic part of Florida's natural landscape, but they're not simply a vast expanse of wetland. Seven distinct ecosystems comprise the region, ranging from the famed sawgrass marshland to miles of prairie and pine forest. Guests can explore afoot, by car, boat, kayak, mountain bike and even horseback.
-Beaches: Waterfront areas abound around Lake Okeechobee holiday rentals, but sandy beaches are few and far between. For a real Florida beach experience, guests usually make the short 30 mile drive to the Atlantic coast for the miles of barrier island beaches and calm-watered boating opportunities of the Intracoastal Waterway.
-Theme Parks: The elaborate and monumentally exciting amusement parks of Orlando lie just two hours' drive to the north of Lake Okeechobee. With so many to chose from, an entire holiday could easily be spent solely sampling these attractions, but the unmissable ones are, of course, Disney World and Universal Studios.
-Nightlife: Decidedly rural with a resort flavour, Lake Okeechobee's nightlife may lack finesse, but it's simple, straightforward, and you know what you're getting. Chain restaurants dominate, and the bars may have a similar feel, but it's good-natured and fairly wholesome fun.
Weather in Lake Okeechobee
Florida's climate borders on the tropical, with two distinct seasons: one wet and one dry. The wet season is the summer, which tends to be long, hot, and humid. Temperatures get into the mid-30°C range, and afternoons and evenings often see the humidity break into thunderstorms. The dry winters are the high season, by comparison, with temperatures reaching the low-20s and somewhat mimicking the British summer.
Travel to Lake Okeechobee
Public transport is notoriously fickle in America outside of anomalies such as New York and Chicago. Flying and driving is by far the best option for travel in Florida, and the nearest international airport to Lake Okeechobee is Orlando at 103 miles away. Such a distance is considered a small jaunt by Americans, largely thanks to inexpensive petrol and a superbly designed and maintained road system. Miami International and Orlando-Sanford International are two further options at 130 miles away each, albeit in different directions.
