Make a self catering villa or holiday rental in Haiku, Maui, Hawaii your home away from home

Haiku is a plantation town on the north coast of Maui, Hawaii’s second largest island. The town is a major centre of the pineapple production and has many cowboy ranches, locally called “paniolo”. The centre of this authentic town has a grocery store, post office, and several restaurants as well as an exotic bird sanctuary. It is the perfect place to rent a holiday home in Maui for those who want to stay in a real Hawaiian atmosphere. Close by there are several world class beaches with plenty of winter surf. The rainforest and waterfalls are just along the Hana Highway from Haiku.

Things to do in Haiku, Maui Beaches and Watersports

Haiku is just a few minutes drive from some of Maui’s best surfing beaches. Jaws is famous for its winter surf and along with Ho’okipa is popular for surfing and body boarding. Baldwin Beach is popular with locals and visitors alike for swimming and watersports.

Drive the Hana Highway

One of the world’s most scenic drives can easily be enjoyed from your self catering apartment in Haiku. The 56-mile winding route passes old plantation towns, beaches, forests and the Haleakala Crater with great scenery along the way and an incredible 54 bridges.

Shopping

There are plenty of opportunities for shopping close to your Haiku holiday rental home. From local art galleries to designer boutiques, Maui offers many handmade souvenirs. Jewellery, glassware, hats and wooden bowls are just some of the beautiful crafts made on Maui or visit some of the larger malls such as the Lahaina Cannery Mall which has 50 specialist stores.

Places to visit near Haiku, Maui Haleakala National Park

This dormant volcano, nicknamed “the House of the Sun”, is the tallest peak on Maui and climbs steeply to its 10,023-foot high peak. The crater is 3000 feet deep, 7.5 miles long and 2.5 miles wide. The bare rocky lava now resembles the moon’s surface.

Pineapple Plantation Tour

Maui grows almost one third of the world’s pineapples and a trip to a plantation is a fun visit. See how pineapples grow, ride a cart, pick your own juicy pineapple and watch a pineapple cutting demonstration at one of the many pineapple plantations close to your holiday rental home in Haiku.

Kula

The inland town of Kula is just 20 miles drive from your Haiku holiday rental. The Marketplace features the work of local artists and talented craftsmen. Once you have bought your fill of homemade produce, clothing and pottery, head for Kula Lodge. There are splendid views across the west of the island from the garden terrace which also has a wood burning pizza oven. Enjoy the exotic flower garden with a drink or dinner.

Weather in Haiku, Maui

Haiku has beautiful warm temperatures all year round ranging from 79-84°F (26-29°C). Popular with winter visitors, it has a little rain each month from October to March which keeps the island lush and green. The mountainous inland region has heavy rainfall throughout the year.

Escape back in time

5 of 5
I lived in Hawaii from 1975 til 1978 and never missed a day being astounded by the beauty of it all. For 34 years I have steadfastly refused to return lest I would have my memories destroyed by the overwhelming commercialization and crowding that have occurred since I left. Having remarried ten years ago, I finally relented to my new wife's implorings to visit, but I would not be a part of the Kaanapali/Makena madness. So I searched the net and found Hale Mauka Makai after much time spent looking for what I remembered about the Hawaiian paradise I once knew. The fear I had of disappointment when we arrived vanished when we arrived on the grounds, a surprisingly short drive from the airport. This was exactly the Hawaii I remembered! Wide open acreage, cooing doves, rampant with blooming flowers everywhere and a drop dead gorgeous house and grounds with absolute utter privacy. looking down to the ocean on one side and at Haleakala on the other. Trees laden with a variety of tropical fruits are begging to be picked and the pool is pristine. Claudia, Kevin, and little Nohealani will meet you when you unpack and then, unless you ask, you see no one and no other dwelling for the rest of your stay. There is among the owner's family that exceedingly rare quality that makes you feel like you've known them before and would love to know them forever. I've read travel reviews more than I care to count over the years in search of our travel destinations, but I have never written one. Hale Mauka Makai and the Ledesma family changed that. Take it from me--- I've lived the classic Hawaiian paradise years ago, and I'm here to tell it is still alive and well if you know where to look. Look no farther William and Elizabeth
