Make a holiday cottage in Yelverton your home away from home

Yelverton is a rather large village located roughly 16 kilometres northeast of Plymouth in the stunning Devonshire countryside. The fact that Yelverton is situated right on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, and a mere 16 kilometres from the coast, also makes the village the perfect destination for active and adventurous holidaymakers, keen to use their time away to undertake some exciting outdoor activities. Yelverton is perfectly suited to active couples or families, who are looking for a quiet base from which to indulge their love of the outdoors.

Staying in a Yelverton holiday cottage, as opposed to holiday accommodation in larger towns such as historic Plymouth, allows travellers to avoid the tourist hoards that tend to flock to the coast during the summer months. Holidaymakers in Yelverton are thereby left with all of the benefits of a seaside getaway, minus the crowding and loss of privacy. As well as cottages, HomeAway offers bungalows and holiday barns in Yelverton.

Things to do

-Walking: The proximity of Yelverton holiday cottages to Dartmoor National Park means that visitors are spoiled for choice when it comes to great hiking trails. Walkers who would prefer to set off on their own however, may enjoy trails such as the Eylesbarrow & Sheeps Tor track, which winds through 13 kilometres of the surrounding countryside.

-Cycling: Avid cyclists will find that the region around Yelverton is perfect for both road cycling and mountain biking. Road cyclists basically have the option of setting off in whatever direction they choose, as the roads in the area are generally not overly busy; mountain bikers, meanwhile, have the whole of Dartmoor National Park on their doorstep! Holiday accommodation in Dartmoor itself is also available.

-Cultural attractions: Holidaymakers looking for something a little different won’t be able to go past the Yelverton Paperweight Centre. The centre began as a private collection of roughly 800 paperweights, although contemporarily, it houses over 1,200 of these pretty decorations, in addition to selling them along with paintings and other crafts.

-Museums: Buckland Abbey is a stunning 700-year-old structure, which lies roughly five kilometres outside Yelverton. Originally home to a group of monks, the Abbey now serves as an extension of the City of Plymouth Museums and Art Gallery, which displays part of their amazing collection there. Anyone interested in art or architecture will consequently find Buckland Abbey well worth the short drive from their Yeverton holiday accommodation.

-The Merrivale Prehistoric Settlement is an amazing Bronze Age ruin, which is situated roughly 14 kilometres from Yelverton. Consisting of the remains of a group of houses, a number of burial cairns and a post-medieval apple crushing stone (once used to make apple cider), the site has a lot to offer history buffs! One of the best things about visiting the settlement however is that there is no entrance fee, and visitors can spend as long as they wish exploring the area.

Weather in Yelverton

Yelverton enjoys warm summers and temperate winters, which makes the summer months popular with travellers interested in outdoor pursuits such as hiking. Holidaymakers who are more interested in using their time away to relax however, may like to consider booking a Yelverton holiday bungalow during the cooler months and revelling in the village’s out-of-season tranquillity.

Travel to Yelverton

Getting to Yelverton is a relatively simple process, owing to the fact that the village is situated just off the A386 north of Plymouth. Yelverton is easily reached via car, or for travellers without their own transport, buses from larger towns such as Plymouth are available.

Perfect For Exploring Dartmoor

5 of 5
We spent a week in this cosy cottage with views of the moors and Brent Tor. Very friendly owners and overall a very nice stay. The only complaint being that a week is not long enough here. The cottage is good for walkers and for touring around the area.
