Teignmouth is a wonderful little historic port in South Devon. The working port is a wonderful place to sit, watching the boats coming in and out whilst you sip a tea or a local beer and let the day drift by.

Places to holiday in Teignmouth, Devon

A history in salt production and the fishing industry gave way to tourism in the mid 1800’s when the railway made its path through Teignmouth. This centuries old tourism industry makes the community welcome to anyone who ventures to its coastal shores. This beautiful community of beaches surrounded by red sandstone cliffs is one of Devon’s most popular holiday getaways.

A sand and shingle beach provide a great spot for simply watching the oceans water lap against the shore or to explore the Jurassic Coastline or Portland Bill on a sunny day. There are plenty of restaurants and shops around the area, as well as miniature golf and a children’s playground making it a great location to relax for the day with your family. Other outdoor adventures include trips to neighboring communities for a day of salmon fishing. Any adventure is found in close proximity to any guest house or Teignmouth self catering cottage.

Those seeking activities on dry land have several choices. Restaurants serving both ethnic and regional cuisine are many, as well as pubs which have anything from a family friendly atmosphere with adjoining playgrounds to pubs with lively bands playing inside.

Things to do in Teignmouth, Devon

Teignmouth Orangery is a pleasant area on the grounds of Bilton house which was constructed in the early 1840’s. Its grounds are lush with plant life and beautiful for simply strolling around its premises. Peruse areas from the same period on Teignmouth’s Pier. A visit to its historical railway station is another great way to understand the impact of the railroad on the community with many locomotives housed in the original buildings. The railway had a significant impact in the area and its increase in tourism in the mid 1800’s.

As the only historical pier in the area, the present day pier is a fun location for families with many children’s rides, a go kart track and plenty of quaint shops to get lost in. Castle Drogo allows those who cross its moat to understand a more recent history. The work of architect Edwin Lutyens has the appearance of a centuries old structure however was constructed in the early 1900’s. This is known as the last castle constructed in England. Also impressive are the gardens which are full of various types of flowers and plants.

Simply taking in the day to day activities along the coastal areas of Teignmouth’s older part of town is an educational way to observe the day-to-day life of Teignmouth while watching fishing boats coming to shore unloading a catch or taking in multi colored huts on its coastal areas.

A hidden gem close to everything

5 of 5
We stayed over the Easter school holidays with 4 adults and 2 children (4yo & 18mths). The position of the Corner House was great as beaches and town so close and parking was no hassle as a permit was conveniently sorted for us. Bedrooms were spacious, kitchen well equipped and lounge very cosy. We loved the thoughtful cream tea that awaited us and the owners were fantastic at communication - emails were responded to quickly and the guide book inside the house was detailed. Having small children, we especially loved the plastic cutlery, the games/books in the cupboard and bunk beds (plenty of room for our travel cot in any of the 3 rooms) and the use of a washing machine. Towels were plentiful and the house was immaculately cleaned too. To further equip for families a highchair would be a nice added bonus to save packing our own - that's our only thought for the future. Would highly recommend to others and would use again if returning to the area.

Second time at The Cottage and had a great week again. We love Shaldon and The Cottage is a perfect retreat. John was great to deal with and returned our deposit day after we left. no complaints and look forward to returning again - hopefully next year.
