Make a holiday cottage in Swimbridge your home away from home

Swimbridge is a small village situated roughly six kilometres from the larger town of Barnstaple in Devon. Swimbridge is known for its church, but even more so as the home of Rev. John "Jack" Russell, the man credited with breeding the first Jack Russell terrier. Visitors to the region may choose to explore the stunning walking trails, which wind through the rolling green hills that surround the village, or make their way to one of the nearby seaside townships for some sun, sand and shopping. Parents with children will also find the seclusion of Swimbridge holiday cottages the perfect place for a quiet family getaway.

Holiday accommodation in Swimbridge offers a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, with a number of great cottages, homes and apartments on offer. Swimbridge holiday homes, which average around £340 per week, also provide budget-conscious travellers with much more for their money than holiday rentals in Barnstaple and other large and popular resort areas.

Things to do

-Beaches: While Swimbridge holiday cottages may not be situated directly at the seaside there are still a number of great beaches within easy driving distance. Coastal locations such as Combe Martin Beach, Westward Ho!, Croyde Bay and Hele Beach provide holidaymakers with kilometres of seaside to explore, in addition to some great swimming locations and sea caves.

-Geocaching: Geocaching is basically a giant game of hide and seek, in which participants use global positioning devices to locate hidden treasure (geocaches). There are numerous geocaches located nearby to holiday cottages in Swimbridge, and finding these is a great holiday activity for families with children (or big kids!). It’s also a really fun way to explore and learn about the Swimbridge area.

-Hiking: Swimbridge’s proximity to the Exmoor National Park means numerous great walking trails in the region. A great example of one of the fantastic long distance paths leading out from the park is The South West Coast Path, which stretches over 1,013 kilometres and encompasses much of the coastline in the region. Holidaymakers looking for something a little shorter, however, will be spoiled for choice in the area.

-Cycling: Cycling is without question one of the most popular outdoor activities in the Swimbridge area. This is due in no small part to the presence of the Tarka Trail (a walking/cycling path), which winds its way through Devon. Enthusiastic cyclers can join the 290-kilometre path in Barnstaple and utilise it to visit a number of the surrounding villages or to simply explore the countryside. Holidaymakers interested in walking parts of the trail can also do so, with public transport available. HomeAway also offers holiday cottages in Ilfracombe and other villages along the Tarka Trail.

-Churches: One of the most stunning buildings in Swimbridge, the Church of St. James, is said by some to be amongst England’s best churches. At over 1,000 years old, the building is certainly steeped in history, although it’s the intricate furnishings and stunning artwork housed inside that makes the church a definite must-see.

Weather in Swimbridge

Swimbridge generally enjoys warm, temperate summers and cool, damp winters, which makes the summer months the most popular with tourists. Holidaymakers who don’t mind the cooler weather, however, will find that the village is also a great place for a winter getaway; especially when considering the possibility of a great out-of-season deal on a Swimbridge holiday cottage.

Travel to Swimbridge

Swimbridge is extremely easy to reach by car, owing to the fact that it’s situated just off the A361 near Barnstaple. But visitors who don’t have their own transportation need not despair: the village is also serviced by bus from Exeter, or travellers may like to take a train to Barnstaple and cover the remaining six kilometres to Swimbridge by taxi (or bus).

A lovely quiet place to stay set in a beautiful location

4 of 5
We found Stream Cottage a lovely place to stay, the cottage was clean and welcoming in a lovely quiet position and the beautiful garden was great for us all to enjoy, the position was close enough to get to the beach within half an hour and we also got to enjoy some lovely walks on Exmoor, we would recommend this cottage and we hope to return.

Well equipped cottage in great location

5 of 5
The cottage was fantastic; stylish and immaculate but also homely and well equipped for all the family''s needs. The owners were very helpful and welcoming. There were some really lovely touches such as homemade cake waiting our arrival and plenty of thought about making sure the children were entertained, too. We will definitely return!
