Make a holiday cottage in Shillingstone your home away from home

Situated within beautiful Blackmore Vale, Shillingstone is a tranquil village nestled against the River Stour in Dorset. The peaceful setting of Shillingstone and its proximity to holiday homes in Shaftesbury makes it an ideal escape from the city. Blackmore Vale is home to numerous historic sites and scenic walks that attract outdoor enthusiasts, families, and couples seeking a romantic hideaway. Shillingstone is actually mentioned in the Domesday Book when it was a village of 46 dwellings. It was once home to tallest maypole in Dorset, but today it is a typical rural village that just over 1,000 people call home.

Holiday cottages in Shillingstone are readily available through HomeAway, with everything from cosy one-bedroom cottages to luxurious five-bedroom cottages able to accommodate up to ten people. Prices for Shillingstone holiday cottages start at around £250 for the week, and all come furnished with the comforts of home. Additional amenities such as DVD players, washer/dryers, and the ability to bring pets are available.

Things to do

-Outdoor activities: Guests at Shillingstone holiday cabins will find themselves enveloped in the greenery of Blackmore Vale. Walking and cycling are both very popular here, as quiet roads and lovely scenery make the area around Shillingstone a wonderful place to explore. A prominent path is the circular trail from Shillingstone to Hanford, which is only a few miles long. The path takes visitors through both historic villages and boasts views of the River Stour.

-Historic monuments: There are plenty of historic sites within Blackmore Vale. The parish Church of the Holy Rood is a must-see for Shillingstone holidaymakers and dates back to the 12th century. Also in Shillingstone is the historic Shillingstone Railway Station, which first opened in 1863. Several other notable historic monuments are located in Shaftesbury, including St. Peter’s Church and the ruins of Shaftesbury Abbey.

-Family attractions: Families have a lot of options to choose from in the area surrounding Shillingstone. Nearby Blandford has a well-rated leisure centre with a waterslide and other fun features, laying claim to its own fair share of holiday cottages. Over in West Knoyle, families can spot bison, elk, prairie dogs, and other interesting animals at the fun and educational Bush Farm Bison Centre.

-Culture: There are a number of wonderful museums within reach of holiday cottages in Shillingstone that cater to a wide range of interests. Children will love the Dinosaur Museum in Dorchester, which is home to an excellent selection of dinosaur bones and fossils. Other popular museums in the area are the Tank Museum in Bovington and the Royal Signals Museum in nearby Blandford.

A wonderful little haven!

5 of 5
The hosts, Hilary and John, are both very friendly and helpful and on hand should you need help with the property or advice regarding the surrounding area. The property is beautifully kept, inside and out, and has all the home comforts (and more) that you would wish for during a stay away from home. An absolute little peace haven, and ideal location to relax and enjoy. Our party of 4 thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and returned home very much refreshed and relaxed. Thank you for hosting us and sharing your wonderful cottage.

Just as described. Peaceful accommodation in North Dorset

5 of 5
Cosy cottage accommodation with enough equipment for two. The weather was wet and cold while we were there but the owners thoughtfully provide Electric blankets and additional heating appliances so no problems indoors! Nice bathroom with large bath and separate shower cubicle. Bread, butter, milk, tea and coffee provided on arrival which is a nice touch. Washing machine and tumble drier provided. Friendly welcome from the owners. Free wifi, good O2 and BT Mobile signals. Note that this cottage is attached to the owners house, as stated in the details. Would definitely use again.
