Sherborne is an historic little gem of a market town on the border of Somerset and Dorset. It is a popular holiday destination, desired for its beauty and tranquil surroundings. Many of the antique buildings in the old town are built from distinctive ochre coloured ham stone including the Abbey, the manor and 2 castles (1 built by Sir Walter Raleigh). HomeAway has an excellent collection of holiday cottages in Sherborne that will suit everyone. Sherborne is an ideal base to enjoy the gloriously green rolling countryside of Somerset and Dorset, and is only 26 miles from the sea at Weymouth and 39 miles from Poole. Sherborne holiday homes can accommodate small or large groups in charming stone cottages, beautifully renovated barns and sweeping country homes. Tucked away in rambling cottage gardens or amid lovingly manicured lawns, some of the holiday accommodation in Sherborne also offers guests their own swimming pool, perfect for the warmer months. Historic accommodation in the most breathtaking untouched areas is the perfect romantic destination for couples, with cottages for two also available.

Things to do in Sherborne

The known roots of Sherborne go back as far as the year 705 and the town was once capital of Wessex, one of the 7 Saxon Kingdoms of England. The picturesque Old Town features many medieval buildings but some Georgian ones too. History buffs will certainly love Sherborne.

-Sherborne Town and Abbey Trail is an absolute must see for visitors staying in Sherborne holiday cottages. The trail takes in the major buildings of the town including the abbey. This historic building has breathtaking architecture and stained glass windows designed and made by Whistler. Dating back to the 8th century, it is the oldest grand scale church of its kind in Britain. 2 Saxon Kings are buried here and the Abbey still operates as a church with regular services. The trail also includes Sherborne Castle: built for Sir Walter Raleigh in the 16th Century. The huge manor house is still owned and lived in by the Digby family and is a massive manor house with luxurious furnishings, sweeping manicured lawns and gardens.

-Cadbury Castle is a hill fort that dates back to the Iron Age and among other things had associations with King Arthur. Now an ancient monument, Cadbury Castle is a fascinating historic site to visit, with a rich history found in many of the Saxon, Roman and Iron Age artefacts that were discovered during excavation of the area.

-The Sherborne Museum is a small and friendly museum that is well worth the visit. It is small but deceiving because it is packed with a fantastic showcase of interesting artefacts depicting the life and times of the people and the town, along with some beautiful original artwork from local Edwardian artists.

-Mapperton House and Gardens: in nearby Beaminster is an excellent example of a large romantic house and gardens set in a beautiful valley. Dating back to Elizabethan times, the house and outbuildings are set amid beautifully sculptured and landscaped grounds including an Italianate garden, croquet lawn and ornamental fishponds.

-Lulworth Cove is probably the most glorious destination on the coast within easy reach of holiday homes in Sherborne and is about 25 miles away. Part of the Jurassic Coast, the rock formations known as the Stair Hole and Durdle Door are among the most well known of all Britain’s coastal features. As well as the beautiful cove and pretty town, there’s Lulworth Castle which is open as a museum.

lovely family home in great location

5 of 5
On entering the property we were overwhelmed how lovely, comfortable and welcoming the property was set out. All the facilities we required with full briefing and description in the folder supplied. There was an array of cooking facilities which in some s/c can be limited. The garden was well set out with lovely outside/shaded seating. A selection of toys and games for the children. Completely dog friendly and well supplied for the four legged friends with lots of walks nearby. A great base for exploring Dorset. Definitely recommended.

Lovely, spacious house

5 of 5
We had a fantastic couple of weeks in this lovely house. It was extremely comfortable and there was plenty of room for 3 families. The location is fantastic. It's in a beautiful, peaceful rural location but only a short drive from Bridport and the coast. There were also lots of really nice walks straight from the door. We would happily go back again as there is so much we didn't get chance to see and do!
