Self-catering holiday cottages in Scotland

Enjoy your Scottish break from the comfort of your own cosy cottage

Scotland is a beautiful country, steeped in history and culture, but it also offers endless activities: from fishing for wild salmon and trout in Argyll and Perthshire; to visiting the many Scottish castles and whisky distilleries scattered throughout the Highlands; to sampling the sensational mix of history and nightlife in cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh, Stirling and Aberdeen. Indeed, wherever you head, the landscape alone may be enough to tempt you to retire permanently to a self-catering holiday cottage in Scotland! Scottish holiday cottages are perfect for weekend breaks or regular holidays. They're easy to reach and offer fantastic value for money. That way, you have more time and money with which to really get the most from your stay, and by using the HomeAway search service, you can also save time and money when finding your perfect self-catering cottage, log cabin or even Scottish castle.

Holiday cottages in Scotland: Edinburgh

Edinburgh is an international city of the highest calibre, with galleries, museums and attractions as far as the eye can see. There's also a bustling nightlife, ranging from cosy neighbourhood pubs to up-scale cocktail bars, whose unique and delicious potions are made my 'mixologists'. The Edinburgh Festival brings visitors – and acts – from across the globe, and of all the Scottish castles, Edinburgh Castle, which towers majestically over the city, is the undisputed jewel. There might not be many cottages in the city itself, but there are plenty located on the outskirts from which you can travel to and from the centre each day.

Holiday cottages in Scotland: Highlands and Islands

The Scottish Highlands are the perfect place to get away from it all. Here you can enjoy the finest walking, climbing and fishing holidays – all framed by swards of heather and that stately sombreness for which the Scottish countryside is renowned. Certainly, then, the Scottish Highlands are the most spectacular place to rent a holiday cottage in Scotland; choose one in Inverness, and find yourself within reach of Ullapool, and the ferry to Isle of Lewis, or simply sample the beauty of island life with a cottage on the Isle of Skye.

Holiday cottages in Scotland: Perthshire

The green heart of Scotland, Perthshire, is a magnificent – and often underrated – region to visit. With 30 top golf courses, fantastic fishing holidays and a vast range of terrains perfect for everything from climbing to river rafting, sailing to skiing, Perthshire is sure to please those who long for outdoor activities without, perhaps, wanting to dare the quietude and isolation of the Scottish Highlands.

Holiday cottages in Scotland: Fife

The wonderfully peaceful Fife, blessed with miles of golden beaches, many top class golf courses and thick, unspoilt woodlands is a great place to take a self-catering Scottish cottage, especially for golfers, walkers and beach lovers. But should the desire for a night out – as it so often does on holiday – strike, Edinburgh's only about an hour away!

Holiday cottages in Scotland: Argyll and Stirling

Scotland's West Coast is a fantastically rugged, natural, wild region where Gaelic culture continues to thrive. Filled with historic monuments, Argyll and Stirling also boast such totemic Scottish wildlife as otters, puffin and eagles – it's little wonder that cottages here are in such demand.

Perfect base in a perfect place.

Four nights in Cellardyke sets you up for the winter. Narrow streets tame the traffic and you leave the buzz behind. The flat is within staggering distance of The Haven - nice food and splendid pints. After good nights sleep we marched through Pittenweem and on to St. Modens. Soup and a sandwich in The Diving Gannet fuelled us for our return along this section of the coastal path - wildlife ranging from snails to seagulls in abundance; huge horizon and generous amounts of sun - sore feet, but well worth it. Saturday was lobster day. We walked along the shore to Crail and bought our lobsters from the hut on the harbour. We had our cool bag prepared with an ice-pack for the walk home, bought sandwiches from the Co-op and devoured them on the harbour whilst watching a man paint the end of his house in the pouring rain. The lobsters were to die for. Sunday, we drove into St Andrews and enjoyed free parking till 1pm. The Butterfly House in the Botanic Gardens is well worth a visit. The Dolls House gives a good value lunch. The Boathouse in Anstruther provided us with free sunshine in their beer garden before enjoying our farewell dinner in The Waterfront. Fife- The East Neuk - Ye Cannae beat it!
