Enjoy picturesque Devon with Salcombe holiday cottages

Salcombe is a seaside town in South Hams, Devon. It lies on the South East coast of England and is part of the area known as the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In the past, Salcombe was known as a fishing and shipbuilding port and although much of this has now ceased, the marina continues to be busy with moorings and trips as well as local commercial fishing vehicles. Salcombe shellfish is well known and highly commended whilst the warm welcome given by the local villages and businesses make Salcombe a must-do experience.

HomeAway has a number of holiday cottages in Salcombe available for visiting groups of all sizes, from larger groups of ten or more people to couples and small families. Traditional architecture meets sleek and modern design in Salcombe and therefore there is a diverse range of rental property on offer. Small thatched cottages disguise comfortable, well equipped living space whilst sleek modern buildings offer a luxurious stay. Many of the holiday apartments in Salcombe feature well equipped kitchens with laundry facilities, microwaves, dishwashers and wi-fi access whilst large baths, powerful showers and comfy beds are also in plentiful supply. Children and pets are welcomed in selected cottages and some luxury villas also have their own swimming pools.

Salcombe is the ideal destination for those seeking a boating holiday with a flair. However, throughout England there are hundreds of idyllic locations for families and couples alike. From holiday cottages in Christchurch there is a great deal to explore, from the famed Christchurch Priory to the busy marina, whilst holiday apartments in Camden Town are the ideal base from which to discover the iconic market, destination nightlife and Regents Park.

Things to do

Sailing: The port and marina at Salcombe has been operational for hundreds of years when the shipbuilding industry was at its peak. Nowadays there are just a few commercial fishing boats whilst the rest remain purely for pleasure. Boats of all sizes are available for hire manned or unmanned, whilst marina facilities are also open for visitors. Bookings are recommended, especially during the summer months.

Fishing: Whilst sea fishing is extremely popular, visitors can also fish in the Salcombe and Kingsbridge Estuary which is also located within easy reach of holiday cottages in Salcombe. There are a number of angling societies in the local area from where advice, licences and equipment (including recommended bait) can be purchased.

Beaches: Devon is home to some of the country’s best beaches and Salcombe is no exception. Whilst the South Sands Beach remains the most famed and popular, the North Sands Beach is just as delightful. The South Sands however is a Blue Flag awarded area with a commendation from the Marine Conservation Society for 5* water quality. There are numerous facilities including toilets and refreshments within easy reach and access for dogs in certain areas.

Walking: Devon was made for walking and within close proximity of Salcombe holiday apartments there are a number of options for walkers of all levels of experience and ability. Whilst coastal and beach walks tend to appeal to those seeking a simple stroll, Dartmoor offers a more bracing experience with hill walking and hiking routes also widely on offer.

Weather

Salcombe is often considered the ideal place to retire thanks to the many activities and the extremely pleasant year-round climate. During the winter, temperatures tend to stay between 4 and 8⁰C whilst in the summer they can rise to almost Mediterranean temperatures of over 19⁰C. Rain, as with anywhere in the UK, is common throughout the year but during the summer months the area experiences on average seven days of rain in a month.

Travel

Travel to Salcombe is relatively simple and straightforward by a variety of means. Therefore, whether a visitor is arriving by car or public transport, they are likely to find Salcombe to be very accessible. By car, leave the M5 at the junction with the A38 and follow this until reaching the A381. From here follow the road until it reaches the junction with the B3204 (Devon Road) and follow this into town. Alternatively, there is a train station at nearby Totnes from where a taxi or bus can be obtained.

Absolutely brilliant house. 2 families loads of space

5 of 5
We spent a week at Reef Point in July 2017. The house is absolutely beautiful. Kept to a fantastic standard from the garden furniture, to the bbq to the cleanliness. It had all the mod cons that we could have asked for. We had four children under 5 and the house was absolutely perfect. We changed the occupants to 8 adults half way through the week and it was even more perfect as the location is quite hilly for little ones to walk into Salcombe or the the beach. All the rooms are of a great size and the master suite is just stunning. The views are breathtaking as is the garden. The kitchen was fully equipped and the lounge and play areas were huge for the kids. Even with 8 adults at no point did we feel cramp. We were lucky with the weather. Alex, the owner, was an absolute gent throughout and sorted any issues we had with speed and a smile. Thanks for making our holiday absolutely fabulous. There were a couple of incredibly minor points. To make it an even more perfect stay (if it is possible) it would have been nice to have some basic toiletries e.g shower gel and some shampoo or soap in the bathrooms, as we didn't bring any of our own (we did buy some!). The only other thing we could think of to improve it would be an umbrella for the table on the balcony. If it is super sunny we found the kids couldn't sit out there for too long as it got the sun all day and we really needed some shelter! The last point for those with small children (under 5's), it is a very steep walk to and from Salcombe and our 3 and 4 year old were ok going down but didn't manage it back up. Therefore location was beautiful but about 15 min walk from Salcombe. We ended up pacing back up the hill, getting the car and picking the little ones up from town. No great shakes but something to consider. We will come again thats for sure. A beautiful house, in a beautiful village with beautiful beaches. What more could we ask for. Thanks again. Ali

One of the best!

5 of 5
My family and I have just spent a delightful week in Trebor which couldn't be more conveniently located for all the activities Salcombe has to offer, especially sailing as the boat park is a very short walk away and we brought our Laser 13 with us. The town too is just around the corner so you are never that far away from a delicious Salcombe Dairy ice cream! The house itself, although close to the harbour, is in a quiet road with very little passing traffic. We were incredibly lucky to have a week of hot weather so all our meals were taken outside making use of the well designed seating area. It is very well presented, comfortable, extremely well equipped and perfect for a family holiday. We were six adults but it can equally well accommodate small children too. We hope to return next year but possibly with a new addition to our family! Pippa is a great communicator and any queries were promptly dealt with. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this lovely holiday home.
