Salcombe is a seaside town in South Hams, Devon. It lies on the South East coast of England and is part of the area known as the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In the past, Salcombe was known as a fishing and shipbuilding port and although much of this has now ceased, the marina continues to be busy with moorings and trips as well as local commercial fishing vehicles. Salcombe shellfish is well known and highly commended whilst the warm welcome given by the local villages and businesses make Salcombe a must-do experience.

Things to do

Sailing: The port and marina at Salcombe has been operational for hundreds of years when the shipbuilding industry was at its peak. Nowadays there are just a few commercial fishing boats whilst the rest remain purely for pleasure. Boats of all sizes are available for hire manned or unmanned, whilst marina facilities are also open for visitors. Bookings are recommended, especially during the summer months.

Fishing: Whilst sea fishing is extremely popular, visitors can also fish in the Salcombe and Kingsbridge Estuary which is also located within easy reach of holiday cottages in Salcombe. There are a number of angling societies in the local area from where advice, licences and equipment (including recommended bait) can be purchased.

Beaches: Devon is home to some of the country’s best beaches and Salcombe is no exception. Whilst the South Sands Beach remains the most famed and popular, the North Sands Beach is just as delightful. The South Sands however is a Blue Flag awarded area with a commendation from the Marine Conservation Society for 5* water quality. There are numerous facilities including toilets and refreshments within easy reach and access for dogs in certain areas.

Walking: Devon was made for walking and within close proximity of Salcombe holiday apartments there are a number of options for walkers of all levels of experience and ability. Whilst coastal and beach walks tend to appeal to those seeking a simple stroll, Dartmoor offers a more bracing experience with hill walking and hiking routes also widely on offer.

Weather

Salcombe is often considered the ideal place to retire thanks to the many activities and the extremely pleasant year-round climate. During the winter, temperatures tend to stay between 4 and 8⁰C whilst in the summer they can rise to almost Mediterranean temperatures of over 19⁰C. Rain, as with anywhere in the UK, is common throughout the year but during the summer months the area experiences on average seven days of rain in a month.

Travel

Travel to Salcombe is relatively simple and straightforward by a variety of means. Therefore, whether a visitor is arriving by car or public transport, they are likely to find Salcombe to be very accessible. By car, leave the M5 at the junction with the A38 and follow this until reaching the A381. From here follow the road until it reaches the junction with the B3204 (Devon Road) and follow this into town. Alternatively, there is a train station at nearby Totnes from where a taxi or bus can be obtained.

We (3x couples) have just returned from a long weekend in Salcombe. The accommodation was perfect for our needs and exceeded our expectations. Mel was really helpful and answered all of our questions very quickly. It was clean, tidy and comfortable, and the balcony was a massive bonus considering the great weather we had. The location is great and everything we needed was a walkable distance. We would all highly recommend this property and will hopefully return in the future.
