  • Gem of a place to stay quiet but with all you need

Just back from a wonderful stay at the Annexe. Fiona and Alistair couldnt have been more welcoming. Accommodation was first rate plenty of room and all the facilities that you ever need a home from home, in our case better we where thinking of squatting. Apart from the inside access to large garden out the back, the property is built amid an old orchard so apple, pear and plum trees in garden, plenty of wild life including a squirrel, who we christened Cyril which we sat and watched. Fiona also has a couple of lovely dogs who often play out in the garden, when Alison is with them, both very friendly. Bus service Number 41, to town is every 15 minutes during the week, would recommended going after 9a.m. in morning as bus can be busy earlier. Cafe, pubs supermarket and a few shops just over 5 minutes away in Main Street, decent pint and pub food in the Ye Olde Inn in Main Street. Plenty to do in Edinburgh and round about outside of the festival period and a good base to travel from, the new Forth Road bridge for instance is only about 15 minutes away by car from Annexe. Would highly recommended the Annexe as a place to stay will be back.

We spent ten days touring Scotland by car, turned in our vehicle, and took a train to Edinburgh, where we stayed an additional week. PRO:The apartment is located <10 minute walk from Haymarket train station, making it convenient, as all trains stop there that are inbound to Waverly (principle station) or outbound from Waverly. Since all of our train trips were between the two stations, it was VERY convenient to simply buy a pass for the duration of our stay. This saved time and money. Prior to arriving, we were emailed detailed instructions for contacts and how to obtain the keys. There were additional instructions inside the apartment with some "How tos", local restaurants, etc. The apartment, while not large and in an older building, was well furnished. Our plans were to be able to fix breakfast and some dinners there. There was a suprisingly well-stocked kitchen, with a large supply of plates, glasses, utensils and cookware. While there was only a washer, the drying rack provided an easy way to dry our clothes. Cable television and wireless internet were included. The furniture in the apartment was in good repair. CON: The first thing we needed to do was laundry. No instructions on how to make the washer work. For unknown reasons, at some point the switch for the outlet had been turned off. However, the outlet for the washer was located AT THE BACK of the undercounter area where the washer was located, and the switch was ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE PLUG, completely hidded from view. Management needs to review the kitchen utensils, as some were worn out and in poor condition. Also, the shower is equipped with an instant water heater, but the switch for it is via a pull cord, on the ceiling OUTSIDE the bathroom. Again, no instructions telling us this. There was a bad kitchen bulb, and the bath shelves tilted down, allowing personal items to slide to the floor or into the toilet. YUCK! Be careful of the shower-scalding hot or icy cold. No instructions!
