Discover the stunning countryside with holiday cottages in Brecon Beacons

Powys is the largest county in Wales, with a rich history and many monuments dating back to the Bronze Age. At its’ heart is the Brecon Beacon Country Park, an area of 520 square miles of stunning countryside, mountain ranges and natural lakes and pools. The area is hugely popular with tourists who delight in the walking, cycling, climbing and sporting activities which are lent naturally to this beautiful countryside.

HomeAway has a wide selection of self-catering accommodation set in the heart of the Brecon Beacons, suitable for families, groups and couples. Holiday cottages in Brecon Beacons tend to be hugely popular as they allow the guest the freedom of the local area. In among the selection are both converted barns and farmhouses. Visitors can select from modern or traditional decor, well equipped dining areas and beautifully kept gardens and conservatories from which they can enjoy views of the local landscapes.

Although the main reason for visiting the Brecon Beacons is to enjoy the countryside and all its’ pursuits, there is a lot more to Wales than hills and valleys. Nearby Cardiff offers a wealth of cosmopolitan shops, restaurants and attractions with city centre accommodation for visitors after a more lively atmosphere. Alternatively, if you’re visiting during summer, HomeAway offers a variety of holiday homes in the popular seaside resort of Abersoch.

Things to Do

Climbing and Walking: One of the main reasons for visiting the Brecon Beacons is for the mountainous landscape. The Brecon Beacons boast four mountain ranges, with Pen y Fan being the highest at 2,907ft. For the less experienced hiker, there are signposted paths and flatter walks where the countryside can still be fully appreciated.

Cycling: The hills and valleys also lend themselves spectacularly to cycling. Novices and those with experience and a lack of fear are catered for in equal measure with a selection of hire shops for bikes and equipment, including harnesses, seats and pulling trucks for younger family members.

Golf: The local area and terrain is the ideal setting for golfing pursuits, and within the county of Powys there are over a dozen golf ranges to choose from. From the convenient locations of many Brecon Beacons holiday cottages, golfers can select from a variety of lengths, course difficulty and setting as they peruse the many ranges on offer.

Caves: the Brecon Beacons are host to a number of cave systems, including Ogof Agen Allwedd or Agen Allwed, which is known to be 20 miles long. There is also the National Showcaves Centre which, in addition to guided tours, plays host to a dinosaur attraction.

Adventure Sports: The high peaks, rolling valleys and natural water formations in and around the Brecon Beacons make them the ideal location for a variety of adventure sports including hand-gliding, para sailing, archery, canoeing, boating and kayaking. Within easy reach of the many holiday barns in Brecon Beacons are sporting and activity centres where equipment, organisation and tutoring is in plentiful supply.

Weather

Wales has an average of 15 days a month of rainfall, equating to an average of 75mm falling within a month (compared to the national UK average of 49mm). In the winter, the average temperature is around 5°C, with an average of two to three days of snow, but in the summer months temperatures rise to between 10-20°C and enjoy highs of around 30°C. Although the winter months have a higher average wind speed of eight miles per hour compared to five miles per hour in the summer, visitors should bear in mind that winds may be faster and stronger at higher altitudes.

Travel

Holiday barns in the Brecon Beacons can be easily located by car or by public transport, making them a viable option for the majority of travellers. By car, the area can be approached via the A49 from the Midlands, the A470 from the South and the Home Counties, or via the A483 from the West and the coast of Wales. Alternatively, travellers may prefer to travel in by train. The largest local train station, Merthyr Tydfill has regular trains in and out, connecting with Cardiff and Pontypridd which in turn connect with stations and networks across the UK. There are also regular bus services from Cardiff and Swansea, as well as coach tours from numerous operators.

Bank Cottage - Beautiful Cottage

5 of 5
To say the owners David and Anthea we fantastic hosts is an understatement, they made us so very welcome into their beautiful home. The cottage was so quirky everything was a delight!! The beams, the fire, the door catches everything just perfect and made for a very relaxing time for my mom sister and myself. There was complimentary flowers, wine, and tea coffee and milk, just fantastic! The logs burnt beautifully on the fire, the water was constantly hot and the shower was brill!! An ideal please to stay for a total relax or if you are more adventurous there are plenty walks all around, from steep hill climbs to the monument to leisurely strolls to Montogomery or visit Powys castle. All in all a fantastic stay, thank you o much Yvonne Melanie and Jean xx

Little taste of heaven

Property was clean and with all amenities. We had a wonderful week - lots to do in the area - waterfall walks and caves. Lovely and peaceful - life at a relaxed pace. Our 7 month beagle puppy loved the garden. I would definitely recommend and we hope to return.
