Make a holiday cottage in Porlock Weir your home away from home

Porlock Weir is an amazing little coastal settlement, situated approximately 12 kilometres west of Minehead, overlooking the sparkling waters of the Bristol Channel. With a plethora of great outdoor activities such as sailing, cycling and hiking on offer, Porlock Weir is the perfect getaway location for active couples or families, who are interested in spending their holiday exploring the amazing Somerset coastline and associated waters.

Unlike other seaside holiday destinations in the region, Porlock Weir holiday cottages offer unrivalled exclusivity and privacy, in addition to amazing sea views (or in some cases direct ocean frontage). Accommodation is priced from around £300 per week, which when compared to larger and less private coastal locations such as the popular resort of Minehead, proves to be great value for money. With all mod cons, holiday cottages in Porlock Weir are ideal for a traditional British seaside holiday.

Things to do

-Sailing: Porlock Weir is a perfect destination for sailing enthusiasts, with a number of boat charters dotting the region. Visitors may even like to try some sea fishing while they’re on the water. Holidaymakers more interested in relaxing on the shore however, may enjoy spending their time relaxing or fishing on the beach, before strolling back to their cosy Porlock Weir holiday cottage for a glass of wine in the evening.

-Walking: Porlock Weir is popular with avid hikers, with a number of great, long-distance coastal walking paths snaking through this part of Somerset. One fantastic trail in proximity to Porlock Weir but even closer to holiday homes in Dunster is the well-known South West Coast Path, which stretches roughly 1,013 kilometres along the coastline of the Southwest Peninsula.

-Bird watching: Porlock Weir’s location in relation to the coast and Exmoor National Park make it the perfect destination for bird watching. There are numerous coastal walks for spotting a wide variety of avian species or there’s the Exmoor Owl and Hawk Centre for seeing birds of prey in action.

-Natural attractions: Star Gazing may sound like a strange activity to undertake as part of a coastal getaway, but Porlock Weir is the perfect location for it: Exmoor has been designated an “International Dark Sky Reserve”. This basically means that the region around Porlock Weir holiday homes provides some of the most exceptional night sky viewing in the world.

-Museums: The Porlock Museum and the Allerford Rural Life Museum are two very interesting cultural destinations situated near Porlock. Both Museums are designed to provide visitors with a great deal of information regarding the history of the local area. If travellers only have time to visit one of these establishments, however, the collection of 19th-century artefacts displayed at the Allerford Rural Life Museum are certainly worth prioritising.

Weather in Porlock Weir

Porlock Weir enjoys a typical temperate climate, which results in warm summers and cool, damp winters. The most popular time to visit the region is consequently during the summer months, as most travellers are interested in pursuing the area’s many great outdoor activities. Holidaymakers more concerned with relaxing, however, may find that a winter getaway in a Porlock Weir holiday cottage is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Travel to Porlock Weir

Porlock Weir may be a little of the beaten tourist trail, although its proximity to the A39 makes it extremely easy to reach by car. Holidaymakers travelling minus their own vehicle need not worry however, as Porlock Weir is serviced by regular buses from larger towns such as Minehead (except on Sundays).

Delightful barn in a picturesque and peaceful location

5 of 5
We really enjoyed our stay at Meadow Barn. The barn is one of the best we've stayed in and is fitted out to a very high standard. The children really enjoyed playing table tennis in the adjacent barn and the Playstation in the playroom was also a hit! Jackie, the owner was very friendly and helpful and we must compliment her on the lemon drizzle cake which we were presented with on arrival. Would recommend this barn to anyone planning a family holiday in North Devon.
