Make an Okehampton holiday cottage your home away from home

Nestled in the centre of Devon, Okehampton is a lovely rural town rich with natural beauty. Its proximity to Dartmoor National Park makes it a hit with nature enthusiasts and its temperate weather makes it a great place to visit year round. Okehampton is a quiet place where city dwellers can get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, relax and enjoy their surroundings. In addition to the national park, the town is also close to a number of historical attractions and other places of cultural interest.

HomeAway has a diverse selection of holiday cottages in Okehampton to choose from. They range from cosy 1 bedroom accommodation perfect for a couples retreat, to a luxury 3-5 bedroom cottage furnished to a premier standard with added amenities such as a garden and proximity to leisure facilities.

Things to do in Okehampton

Okehampton is a dream destination for nature enthusiasts as the region is full of lovely walking and biking trails, which take visitors through a series of rolling green pastures, ancient rock formations and historic sites. The town of Okehampton itself is a quiet, rural destination with everything from 16th century pubs to modern cafes and restaurants.

-Dartmoor National Park: Most holiday rentals in Okehampton are just a few kilometres north of Dartmoor National Park, which is full of amazing sights and activities. Hiking, walking and biking trails are open throughout the year and reveal the surrounding landscape in all its beauty. Scattered throughout the park are the ruins of castles and estates built centuries ago. It is also not uncommon to spot deer, cattle or small mammals in the region.

-Okehampton Castle: Once the largest castle in Devon, Okehampton Castle is now mostly in ruins, but is still a sight to behold. The scenic ruins date back almost a thousand years and sit serenely on a hill overlooking a river bed. The nearby river is an ideal place for a picnic or to begin a walk around the region.

-Finch Foundry: The Finch Foundry is the last working water-powered forge in all of England. Now maintained by the National Trust, it is located in the tiny village of Sticklepath just a short distance from Okehampton holiday homes. The foundry offers a firsthand glimpse into what life was like for 19th century English villagers. In the 19th century, this foundry would have been a key component of the village, where farmers could make the tools they needed for survival.

The Weather in Okehampton

Whether you’re looking to relax in one of the many rural retreats or countryside cottages in Okehampton offered on HomeAway, or are using Okehampton as a springboard for exploring Dartmoor National Park, chances are the weather will cooperate with you.

Very comfortable cosy cottage.

5 of 5
the cottage was very clean, comfortable and well equipped. The owners Trish and Steve, who live next door were very friendly and helpful. The location is good - easy for walking cycling and it is possible to get to North or South coast. No pubs in the village which is very small but there are some nice ones within a short drive.
