Make a holiday rental home or cottage in Northumberland your home away from home

Northumberland is a wonderfully remote region of England, located in the far north of the country, sharing a border with Scotland. Holiday cottages in Northumberland offer the perfect escape from the hustle and noise of many parts of Britain, with glorious stretches of deserted beaches, imposing castles and some magnificent areas of natural beauty.

Things to do in Northumberland

It is hard to know where to start with a guide to things to do in Northumberland as there is so much on offer. Northumberland’s castles are renowned through much of the country, from the beautiful Alnwick Castle (the set for Hogwart’s School in the Harry Potter films) to the spectacular Bamburgh Castle. There are in fact more castles in Northumbria than in any other region of England. The amazing historic heritage doesn’t stop there. A holiday rental in Northumberland acts as a great base for day trips to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Hadrian’s Wall and Belsay Hall.

Northumberland accommodation is perfect for retreats into the great outdoors too. The wide open landscapes have been voted as ‘England’s most tranquil’, and upon arrival at a rural rental cottage in Northumberland, it is clear to see why. There are two separate Areas of Outstanding Beauty in Northumberland, one encompassing stretches of the castle strewn, wild coastline and the other in the green hills of the North Pennines. The Northumberland National Park is also well worth investigation from any self catering Northumberland accommodation, consisting of a patchwork of moorland, rivers and woodlands. The rivers that cross the area are perfect for fishing, walking and horse riding, with people flocking from miles around to enjoy a Northumberland fly fishing or walking holiday. And after a long day in the countryside, there are easily enough pubs in Northumberland to be able to have a refreshing pint and plate of heart food. There are even a rage of spas in Northumberland if just relaxing in a Northumberland pub with a drink is not enough!

There are a huge number of rivers crossing Northumberland. Fly fishing is sublime from a holiday cottage in Northumberland, as the rivers are among the purest in Britain. Northumberland fly fishing on the rivers of the River Tweed, Till and Aln are all excellent salmon and trout rivers, but it is the River Tyne, considered to be the best salmon fishing river in the country that really attracts people to go fly fishing in Northumberland.

Nature lovers will be right at home in a self catering Northumberland cottage rental. There are more than 60 nature reserves within the county, home to a huge range of rare and unusual animals including puffins, golden eagle and Atlantic grey seals.

Places to visit in Northumberland

Right in the heart of Northumberland is the town of Alnwick. Famous for its huge castle, known as the ‘Windsor of the North’, Alnwick is a wonderful place to visit from a self catering Northumberland holiday cottage. It is in an area of exceptional beauty, and the local villages are absolutely charming, many of which are home to excellent rustic Northumberland pubs.

Cheap flights to Northumberland

Reaching Northumberland accommodation is easy. There are excellent rail and road links from both Newcastle(NCL) and Edinburgh (EDI) airports, which makes a holiday cottage in Northumberland easily reached from anywhere in Europe. Taking a hire car or driving from home is recommended as this is a very rural region.

Lovely house with a fantastic sea view.

We had a fantasy couple of weeks in this lovely house. It is set within a quiet village within walking distance of a pub, a couple of cafe’s and a shop. Large sandy beach only a 5 minute walk. The owners were very helpful and were at the end of the phone if we had any queries. Would highly recommend.

Best holiday in beautiful house. Beautifully decorated throughout, fresh and contemporary furnishings. Masses of space for all of us. Excellently equipped, needed for nothing. Immaculately clean throughout, cannot recommend more highly. Perfect location for access to village and 5 minutes walk from the beach. You can’t beat the beaches, beautiful white sandy beaches, very clean. Crystal blue seas. Bamburgh is a gorgeous traditional Northumbrian village, steeped in history and the Castle is breathtaking.
