Make holiday rental accommodation or a holiday cottage in Northumbria your home away from home

Northumbria in the north east of England, is often cited as the ‘most exciting, beautiful and friendly region in the whole of England’, and the claim is quite possibly true. There are a whole range of bustling towns and quaint villages which adorn the wild, rugged terrain Northumbria is known for. Whether you are taking self catering Northumbria accommodation in a town or a remote log cabin in Northumbria’s wildest region, you will almost certainly be completely endeared to the region after just a few days of your holiday.

Things to do on holiday in Northumbria

Northumbria’s attractions are almost endless. The vast expanses of wild countryside are a real haven of activity, allowing visitors to really escape the hustle and bustle of their daily routines, getting far into the wilderness with just the wind in their ears and the sun on their faces. The Northumberland National Park and the Cleveland Hills are perfect for walking, cycling and riding holidays. There is a huge range of landscapes in Northumbria, from the woodland of Rothbury to the exposed hills of Durham Dales, from the seabird rich cliffs of the Cleveland Way to the wide beaches of the Northumbrian coast. Wherever you take a self catering holiday cottage in Northumbria, you will never be far from exceptionally beautiful countryside, rich in wildlife and perfect for walking, cycling and riding.

During the summer months, Northumbria’s beaches are a real treat to visit. With many miles of unspoilt coastline, finding an idyllic, dune backed beach is never difficult, especially from the more remote log cabin accommodation in Northumbria. Much of the coastline has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Kielder Water and Forest Park is a particular favourite for those visiting the coast.

Northumbria’s long history has meant that there is an enormous wealth of historical attractions in Northumbria. Attractions range from the Darlington Railway Museum, documenting the start of the industrial revolution to the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site, from the 25 imposing medieval castles to many important battlefields of the English-Scots history.

Northumbria’s urban centres are awash with entertainment, culture and attractions. Northumbria is home to the famous cities of Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Durham, offering superb shopping, monuments recognised around the world and a calendar full of events. The Centre of Contemporary Art, the Alnwick Playhouse and Durham’s Gala Theatre are three of the finest places to find culture from self catering Northumbria accommodation.

Places to visit on holiday to Northumbria

Northumberland is a wonderful county which marks the border of England and Scotland. Containing the whole of the Northumberland National Park, Kielder Water and many of Northumberland’s finest beaches, not to mention a wonderful stretch of Hadrian’s Wall, Northumberland is a fantastic place to take a Northumbria holiday cottage for holidays in the great outdoors.

County Durham is a small county, but filled to bursting point with fantastic Northumbria attractions. Durham Cathedral, famously cited as the ‘best cathedral on Planet Earth’ by the author Bill Bryson, is well worth investigating from any Northumbria holiday cottage, but the castles, museums and the beautiful beaches of the Heritage Coast are huge assets for those in Northumbria accommodation in County Durham too.

Travel to Northumbria

A holiday cottage in Northumbria is fantastically easy to reach. As long as you have not taken a really rural log cabin in Northumbria, you can reach your self catering accommodation within just 3 hours of leaving London by train, or just 40 minutes by plane, landing at Newcastle Airport (NCL), which is connected to airports throughout the UK and Europe, and Durham Tees Valley (MME) which receives flights fromLondonand Aberdeen in Scotland.

Lovely, comfortable and cosy cottage on a beautiful setting

5 of 5
A very well equipped and comfortable cottage. Delicious welcome basket from the local bakery-cafe. Also near a great pub with fantastic food. Great base from which to explore Northumberland.

Amazing stay at Stonyfield!

5 of 5
We've just returned from our amazing Easter weekend at Stonyfield, the cottage is so lovely, the photos do not do it justice. We were a party of 6 adults and 2 children and had so much room! We could all be together playing board games, or all be apart doing different activities (or napping!). The cottage is so quiet and the views from all the rooms are beautiful. The large kitchen is well equipped and the tassimo machine went down particularly well. The bedrooms are all gorgeous and my nieces loved playing with the rocking horse in their room. I stayed in the French room and the bed was so comfy I didn't want to get up in the morning. The upstairs bathroom is spacious and the shower is hot and powerful. My sister in law had a bath and said it was amazing. There's also an extra shower and loo downstairs so no fighting for the bathroom in the morning. It was a bit cold / wet to sit outside but there was a nice view over the fields and my niece got to see some very new-born lambs. There were so many nice touches, from the fresh milk in the fridge, the board games, book and DVD library and even a wii with games! Plenty to do if you get rained in and a great way to connect as a family! I can highly recommend a stay at Stonyfield, our experience was fabulous. We did venture out, if you stay here I can recommend a trip to Housesteads Roman Fort and Hadrians Wall and also Kielder Water. Both require a 30-40 min drive but are great for some fresh air and exercise. We also drove up to the border with Scotland, 15-20 min drive, just because we could, really!
