Make a self catering holiday cottage in Newlyn a seafood extravaganza away from home

Newlyn is a fishing town in southwest Cornwall. It is part of the civil parish of Penzance and the largest fishing port in England with more than forty acres of harbour. Newlyn was destroyed alongside Mousehole and Paul in 1595 during the Spanish raid and then rebuilt. Newlyn is well known because Pete Goss set sail from here in the Spirit of Mystery for his five-month epic voyage to Melbourne.

Places to stay in Newlyn

Very little of old Newlyn remains today but it is still a thriving port and popular destination for holidaymakers. Many of the granite cottages that are now used as Cornwall self-catering accommodation were due for demolition, but luckily were saved from this fate by the outbreak of World War11. It is these Cornish cottages which add character to the area and make an charming base for exploring Cornwall.

Although there are many guesthouses and hotels, they do not allow you the same amount of freedom as staying in a Cornwall holiday cottage, especially if you want to get up at dawn and wander the Quays. A good time to stay in Newlyn is over the August Bank Holiday when the Fish Festival is held.

The festival promotes fish landed at the forty-nine harbours, ports and coves around the Cornish coastline. Visitors are able to watch cooking demonstration and enjoy a large selection of seafood. There are children's workshops, fish auctions, arts, crafts and trade stalls, open vessels and a full programme of harbour entertainments and music. This is Cornwall's busiest time of the year and the festival in Newlyn attracts thousands of visitors, so make sure you book your holiday accommodation early.

Things to do in Newlyn

Sandy Beach is a cove just past the fish market and other beaches nearby include Tolcarne (below Newlyn Green), Wherrytown, Eastern Green and Long Rock at Penzance, Lamorna Cove and Mousehole. Nearby attractions include Newlyn Art Gallery, The Exchange Gallery, Trengwainton Garden, Trinity House National Lighthouse Centre, Mousehole Bird Hostpital and Sanctuary, Trewidden Garden, Morrab Garden and St Michaels Mount.

You can fly by Skybus from Penzance airport (St Just) to the beautiful Isles of Scillies or take the Scillonian III from the dock at Penzance. Paradise Park is an award-winning attraction at Hayle with tropical birds, otters and a farmyard, and Flambards at Helston is an award winning village theme park.

Coastal walks close to Newlyn's holiday cottages take you past the harbour, Larrigan and Wherry Rocks onto Penzance. Golf courses in the area include Cape Cornwall (Penzance), West Cornwall (Lelant), Tregenna Castle (St Ives), Hayle Golf Range and Mullion Golf Club. Newlyn and the surrounding districts have something for everyone whether its sports, sailing, horse riding, nightlife, eating out or just taking it easy and enjoying the view from your Cornish cottage.

Weather in Newlyn

Newlyn's climate is mild and it is this that led so many famous painters to the area, as they could sit outside and work and this is also the reason that tropical plants and palm trees thrive.

Travel to Newlyn

Newlyn is served by Newquay airport and Penzance is the last stop on the mainline railway in Cornwall and also a National Express Coach Stop. First Group buses operate locally and throughout Cornwall.

Holiday Cottages Newlyn - Self Catering Holiday Rentals (300+)

Just perfect! Couldn't have chosen a better place for our Pearl Anniversary!

5 of 5
Where do I start! Joan and Richard are a delight! Very welcoming; provided excellent recommendations of where to eat and what to do and couldn't have been more friendly or helpful while respecting privacy. White Cottage has everything, literally everything: the awesome view - rare to find a place where you can enjoy watching dolphins from the comfort of the sofa!; spotlessly clean; well stocked kitchen with everything you need for self catering; luxury bathroom with a powerful shower; lovely fluffy towels and the bed is so comfy too. And PARKING!! Not many places in Cornwall provide parking on site. Joan & Richard let you leave your car on their drive which is very handy anyway but a must for unloading and loading on arrival/departure. The welcome gift of Cornish biscuits and wine was lovely and very much enjoyed and appreciated. It's a perfect location to explore all of Cornwall. Places that are a must to visit: Lizard Peninsula; Land's End; Kynance Cove; St.Michael's Mount; St.Ives; Porthcurno Beach/Minack Theatre; Padstow & Port Isaac - take the coast road and view the beautiful beaches from New Quay onwards and of course, Mousehole and Newlyn that are within walking distance. Mousehole is a beautiful village. Places to eat in Mousehole: The Old Coastguard - the oysters are delicious; 2 Fore Street - the soufflé starters are just mouthwatering; The Ship - good pub food; Rock Pool - tasty breakfast and we were lucky to have been able to eat outside watching sea life, a perfect location for an eatery. Places to eat in Newlyn: Tunnicliffe's Tolcarne Inn - seared scallops in a squash jus/puree, lovely!!; Lewis's Fish & Chips - delicious. Richard also recommended Fraser's fish & chips on the way to Penzance just by the amusement arcade. It was lovely bumping into Joan & Richard every now and again as it was just nice to chat and they would always provide you with good advice and different things to do/places to see. And Maisie their beautiful dog is lovely too. This was my first time to Cornwall and we couldn't have picked a better place to stay or enjoy our 30th Wedding Anniversary, we're just sorry we didn't stay longer.

Great property in good location

4 of 5
The property has been nicely modernised and had everything we required for the two of us plus our dog. Parking is a bit tight but manageable with care. Good pub just round the corner plus a convenience store, which was handy and two supermarkets just a short drive away. The dog friendly beach is just a few minutes walk away, although you have to cross a railway line and we regularly had to wait for trains to pass. Also there is occasional noise from passing trains at night time. Nice walk along the front into Marazion, although we couldn't understand why the adjacent beach isn't dog friendly, as there was hardly anyone on it until you reach the Marazion carparks and main beach area near St Michaels Mount. Marazion itself is a really good holiday / tourist location with plenty to do and see.. The accommodation's location is also good for touring around Southern Cornwall. We day toured around both the Lizard & Lands End peninsulars, visited St Ives (using the train from St Erth for spectacular views), Falmouth for Pendennis Castle and the Seal Sanctuary at Gweek. Beachs and pub at Gunwalloe are also well worth a visit. Overall made for a really good week before moving on to elsewhere in Cornwall - thanks!
