Make a holiday cottage in Milford on Sea your home away from home

As a group of islands, the United Kingdom has always had a close relationship to the ocean, and nowhere is this more true than in Milford on Sea. Once known simply as Milford, the town was first settled by the Saxons and completely situated inland; over time, however, the coast eroded so that by 1900, Milford had become a prosperous village bordering the coast. Today, few holiday locations in the area rival the town for its blustery walks, fine selection of bars and restaurants, and proximity to south England's attractions. Holiday cottages in Milford on Sea place visitors well within easy reach of these, and HomeAway's range of accommodation generally sleeps between 4 and 8 people. If looking for a less-than-traditional seaside village, consider booking some time in a Milford on Sea holiday cottage.

Things to do

-Beaches: As with most seaside villages, the main attraction at Milford on Sea is the beach and the ocean. The pebbly beach is well equipped with facilities like beach huts, an ice cream kiosk and toilets, and the promenade is a good place for a leisurely stroll. Fishing and crab catching are great ways to bag something for a delicious supper!

-Family activities: The area around Milford on Sea offers plenty of scenic walks, especially along the coastline from which the Isle of Wight can be seen on a clear day. If tourists want to try something different, however, geocaching can be great fun. A modern-day treasure hunt where players use GPS to locate hidden containers known as geocaches, there are several hidden in the Milford on Sea area.

-Nature: Less than a mile from Milford on Sea lies the hamlet of Keyhaven. This is not only a popular spot for yachting but the marshes with their abundant wildlife are a bird-watching mecca.

-Historical attractions: Just a mile of two southeast of Milford on Sea, visitors will find Hurst Castle, one of the forts that Henry VIII built as a defence against the French. Tourists can walk there or take a ferry from Keyhaven. Many people do both, travelling to the castle by ferry and then walking back, or vice versa.

-Food: Gastronomes should be sure to book a holiday home in Milford on Sea for the beginning of April, to coincide with Milford on Sea Food Week. During the event, tourists not only get to indulge in all the delectable treats on offer, but can also learn how to make them at one of the cookery classes. Stock up on provisions at the food market while the kids are kept busy: there are many events aimed specifically at young foodies-in-the-making.

-Sightseeing: From Milford on Sea it’s just a hop, skip and short ferry ride to the Isle of Wight. The ferry leaves from Keyhaven and takes passengers to Yarmouth, the gateway to attractions like Yarmouth Castle, The Needles, Brading Roman Villa and the Isle of Wight Zoo. Tourists may even consider booking holiday cottages in Milford on Sea following the Isle of Wight Festival: it's a great haven in which to recover from all that partying.

Great 3-bed holiday home (allowing dogs) to rent in Milford-on-Sea (close to New Forest/Sea)

5 of 5
Hello! We stayed in Pine View Cottage (Milford-on-Sea) with our dog Milo. We had a great time - the cottage is situated in a quiet cul-de-sac and had everything we needed for a short stay. Milford-on-Sea is excellently placed for excursions to the seaside, walks in nature reserves and along the shore (eg Hurst Castle), to the New Forest and further afield to Bournemouth. The property was very well kept with a good kitchen (incl. washing machine/microwave/dishwasher), large lounge/conservatory, a large TV and wifi. There's a small patio area to the rear - which is great for quite times outside unwinding with an evening coffee. We stayed during the hottest of weather in July (2018). There's a brilliant local walk not 500yds from the cottage - it's along a valley path through a beautiful wood - shaded and cool with a gentle stream flowing down the middle. Given the 30oC temps in the open - this was ideal for Milo, even during a late morning walk - he really enjoyed the water! In sum, this is an excellent place to stay with so many local attractions to visit - many of which are dog-friendly! Very highly recommend. ***** ~ Paul Gabbott

Lovely, relaxing getaway

Perfect place to escape away to for a long weekend. Nice decor and appreciated the mini supplies in the kitchen to get us settled. After a day of walking and exploring in the new forest it was really relaxing to be able to lock ourselves away in the cinema room for a night in.
