This is a lovely and relaxed cottage in a delightful situation. To the front are the ruins of Egglestone Abbey (which can be visited at any time) and to the rear there is pasture and woodland with plenty of walking from the door and the River Tees close by. In the day there may be cows and rabbits in the adjoining fields and at night you can see the stars. The house is good value for money and the contacts for the property were responsive and very helpful. Just two of us stayed and we had plenty of room although the kitchen is small and has no storage space for food other than the fridge freezer. Our two Shih Tzu dogs also loved it. The garden is dog proof for small dogs although larger ones may be able to leap over the wall. Recommended activities or visits include Kynren, Beamish, Locomotion, the National Glass Centre in Sunderland and nearby Seaham, and the lovely walk from Low Force to High Force. The cottage could perhaps do with a little more attention to small details but if you are looking for somewhere delightful to stay near Barnard Castle then you have found it.
Set in beautiful countryside and hills of the North Pennines, this property could not be situated better. It is more or less equidistant for the Tyne Tees region and the Lake District and the Borders area.
We visited Hadrian’s Wall, Vindolanda Roman excavations, Durham, Sunderland & Newcastle, Holy Island of Lindisfarne & Bamburgh Castle, Killhope Lead Mine, and Beamish open air museum, and we would recommend all of them.
The house is small but cosy, and has a lovely balcony to sit out at night watching the stars, feeling the fresh air , and having a glass or two.
The WiFi is a big plus and makes planning each day much easier.
There is a log burner, but we didn’t need it.
Slightly limited on kitchen space, especially for washing up, but the owners have made good use of the limited space.
Overall, we would be very happy to return, and we may well do so.
