Visitors to self catering Lostwithiel cottages will quickly understand why Lostwithiel is commonly referred to as the ‘fairest of small cities.’ Located in Mid Cornwall, Lostwithiel accommodation offers a fantastic base from which to explore the many attractions of Cornwall.

Places to holiday in Lostwithiel, Cornwall

While a plethora of historical places are reason enough to enjoy life in a Lostwithiel cottage, there are a great variety of outdoor activities to enjoy too. Bordering woodlands and meadows make a stunning backdrop for the pursuit of any outdoor activity. Cycling and walking are popular pastimes with a great range of footpaths, cycleways and bridlepaths in the area. Canoe trips are also popular down the River Fowey. Guest houses and Lostwithiel self catering cottages are well located to explore the whole region.

There are also a great range of quaint little shops and galleries to explore whilst wandering the streets of Lostwithiel. A produce market has become a popular stop for those on holiday. Delicious restaurants and a bakery only add to the pleasure of this community, as well as its tea rooms and pubs.

Things to do in Lostwithiel, Cornwall

History is alive in this parish, and anyone who enters will be enriched by a nice offering of different fascinating locations. Though many of the original structures, in the community, were destroyed after an uprising in the 1700’s many original ruins remain. A look up the River Fowey is the first reminder of Lostwithiel’s medieval past. Edward the Black Prince built the Restormel Castle where ruins of the original structures circular walls remain. Though the ruins are reason enough for a visit, a pleasant walk up the path to the castle gives a stunning view, on top of a large hill.

Another plainly visible architectural gem, in Lostwithiel, is St Bartholomew’s church reaching high above the skyline of the community. This 12th century church was built centuries ago, in the same location as the original church which was built in 542AD. This church has served many purposes, including everything from a place of worship to a stable for horses during the country’s civil war. Another significant place of worship of equal interest is St Winnow, an ancient church known for its beautiful stained glass. Further historical reminders of Lostwithiel’s past are housed in the Lostwithiel Museum which tells the story of the community’s history found by the Normans many centuries ago, and its later history as the chief port of the area, as well as its mining trade and agricultural history.

A 17th century estate is another must see. Lanhydrock is located a short distance outside of Lostwithiel. In addition to the architectural beauty of the estate are gardens of rare shrubs and trees, as well as over 400 acres of woodland. Several wings are open for public view which gives visitors a better understanding of the opulent lifestyle of its 16th century and 17th century inhabitants. Majestic murals and unique plaster work are only a few of the many beautiful characteristics of this home.

Weather in Lostwithiel, Cornwall

Beautiful property with beautiful view!

5 of 5
A wonderful spacious, comfortable and warm apartment with a glorious view and walks literally on your doorstep. The hosts were very helpful and at the end of the phone should we need them. The apartment was very well equipped and the only thing i missed was a teapot! Had Sunday lunch at the Lewinnick Lodge, which was excellent. Sadly no surf on the doorstep for my husband but he managed to find a spot that was working! Highly recommended and we hope to be back. Thank you.

Amazing house, very well equipped. Hospitable and helpful owner. Perfect!

5 of 5
We shared the house with 2 families of 4 and it was perfect. It was a great location for exploring southern Cornwall. The house is amazing, very well equipped, lovely and warm, with every convenience. We walked to Par beach, which was beautiful, the Par Inn, at the bottom of the road, is great for a quick refreshment and the local shops and take-aways very handy! Paul the owner was helpful and almost instantly answered any questions, but left us to enjoy holiday and was very hospitable. We would definitely recommend to others and will likely return!
