Bask in the shadow of Snowdonia in Llanberis holiday cottages

Llanberis is a small village which sits between the foot of Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales and the southern bank of Lake Llyn Padarn. Originally dedicated to the slate quarrying industry, the town is now best known for its access to the Snowdonia National Park where a wide variety of outdoor activities take place. Llanberis also offers a rich history and a number of listed buildings.

HomeAway offers a variety of holiday cottages in Llanberis specially selected and designed to be an ideal base for the outdoor pursuits of the local area. As well as offering ample parking spaces and laundry facilities, many include well-equipped kitchens and dining areas, making them an excellent choice for large groups. Many of the cottages also offer modern facilities such as dishwashers, barbeques and internet access, allowing guests to relax away from the many outdoor activities.

Although it is the vast countryside of Snowdonia which attracts visitors to Llanberis, Wales has a great deal more to offer to couples and families alike. Families looking for a traditional seaside break should consider a holiday cottage in Tenby. Alternatively, those looking for a quieter base might prefer the simple, traditional appeal of Abergavenny, the “Gateway to Wales” which has a number of delightful cottages and barns.

Things to do

Mountain Climbing: Snowdonia is the name given to a formation of mountains which were created by a series of volcanoes in the Ordovian Period. Of these mountains, Snowdon is the highest, and also the highest in Wales. Standing at 3,560 feet above sea level, there are a number of ways to climb the mountain. The main path from the holiday cottages in Llanberis is a gentle winding path stretching 4.7 miles. Snowdon is also home to the famed Snowdonia Railway which has been in operation for over 100 years.

Llanberis Lake and Railway: Stretching 2.5miles around the circumference of the lake Llyn Padarn, the Llanberis Railway has been in existence since 1971 when it was proposed that a section of the now defunct Padarn Railway (which had been used as a freight line) become a tourist attraction. The train journey takes up to an hour, travelling around the lake, and allowing visitors to take in the majesty of the local landscape.

History: Wales is full of historical buildings, local legends and noted places of interest, and Llanberis is no exception. As well as the fascinating Dolbadarn Castle, with a history dating back to the 13th-century, the National Slate Museum is a popular highlight. Visitors can watch slate splitting demonstrations and learn about the history and former conditions of the industry with a visit to the miners cottages.

Outdoor Pursuits: Nobody comes to Llanberis holiday farmhouses to stay indoors. The rolling hills of Snowdonia were made for sports and activities. Within the local area there is kayaking, canoeing, gorge scrambling, coasteering, rock climbing, mountain biking and pony trekking. In addition, there are a number of local businesses from whom tutoring and equipment for the many pursuits can be easily found.

Weather

Although temperatures throughout Snowdonia tend to be milder than some areas of Wales, there is a great deal of rain to make up for the lack of biting cold. July and August are the warmest of the summer months, with temperatures averaging between 12-19°C. October is the wettest month with an average of 15 days of rain and some 87.3mm of rain falling. Spring tends to be drier with March statistically being the driest month of the year. In addition, the hills tend to have a high wind chill factor and warm clothing is certainly advised.

Travel

Travelling to your Llanberis holiday farmhouse is a unique experience as most of the driving tends to take place through the stunning scenery of the Snowdonia National Park. The Llanberis pass is particularly inviting, and many view the journey as part of their experience. The main route through Shrewsbury to Capel Curig is the most scenic. Alternatively, there is a coach service to nearby Bangor and Caenarfon, a regular train service to and from Bangor and a local bus service to link to the larger surrounding towns.
