The Lizard (Lizard Point) with its lighthouse is a peninsula of Cornwall and the most southerly point of England apart from the Scilly Isles. This area is famous for a distinctive metamorphic rock, Serpentine. Lizard Point has had a lighthouse since 1751 to warn shipping about this attractive but dangerous coastline and its "Man O' War" rocks. There are many quaint coves on the Lizard including Mullion, Church Cove, Kynance Cove, Coverack, Cadgwith, Kennack Cove and Gunwalloe. Poldue Cove is where Marconi sent his first radio signal in 1901

The face of tourism in Cornwall is changing, especially the types of accommodation available and this applies equally to South and North Cornwall. Several nature spots exist on the Lizard including Mullion Island, the nature reserve at Predannack, Gweek National Seal Sanctuary and Goonhilly Downs. The Lizard is also home to the Cornish Chough, one of Englands rare breeds of bird. Cornish cottages are a perfect base for birdwatching, walking, getting close to nature and Cornwall beaches.

A holiday rental on the Lizard Peninsula is close to the Helford River and its numerous hamlets that evoke an atmosphere of past times. There are several inlets and creeks like Frenchman's Creek where Daphne du Maurier was inspired to write her book about romance and smuggling.

Very quaint old railway carriage with lots of character in a beautiful area.

We stayed in the old Egyptian railway carriage for 2 nights last week (end of April). It looked lovely on the outside and inside. A few minutes after arriving the owner, Paula came over to have a chat with us. She then told us where her house was so if we needed we could just knock on the door. We didn't need to so never saw her again, which was fine as we had booked the short break with peace and tranquility in mind. The area in which the holiday homes stand is certainly that. The carriage had everything we needed , including electric heaters which we needed as the weather was quite cold and windy. Once we parked our car we didn't use it again until we left as we walked in the day and went to the village pub in the evenings for lovely food. It is very hilly but we liked that as it gave us plenty of exercise. I would definately recommend staying here but if going at the beginning or end of the season and staying in one of the railway carriages then take warm clothes. We weren't cold as we kept the heaters on and had warm clothes. On our way home we visited the Lizard seal sanctuary which even though seemed quite expensive was really worthwhile. It costs a great deal to keep it running. Adults and children alike would enjoy a day there.

The property had recently been modernised inside with new kitchen & bathroom, which, made the stay more enjoyable. The cottage itself is full of character & charm, which fits a property of this age. There is a superb front garden as well as a large back courtyard/garden, which was fantastic for "Charlie", my Cocker Spaniel, to explore. We were there to walk the coastal paths of the Lizard Peninsula & had a great week of weather to accompany us. In addition to the stunning local scenery & excellent coastal walks, it was always good to return to such a beautiful cottage in serene surroundings & relax in a steaming hot bath. A good sleep was had every night in the well decorated & comfortable bedroom, with stunning views of the fields & Lizard Lighthouse. The property is very well equipped to a high standard & we felt at home from the time we walked through the front door. Our favourite places which "Charlie" was well photographed in were Lizard Point, Kynance Cove, Cadgwith, Poltesco, Porthleven, St Michael's Mount. We also found the local nature reserve & renovated Windmill, just outside the village of interest due to it's history & local wildlife. Overall, a fantastic cottage as a base to explore the Lizard in all it's glory & dog friendly. Thanks Lisa & Lorraine for the unique experience.

                              An absolute haven for us...

Our stay in Poppy at The Coach House was a special, beautiful break. The drive up the hill to the property was stunning in itself, but when we arrived and pulled in, we were pretty much gobsmacked at how lovely the setting was. We were greeted by the lovely Paula, who is such a lovely host - we immediately felt at home and settled in - we did not want to leave! The cottage itself we beautiful, cosy and homely and the scones, cornish butter, cream and jam on arrival was amazing. We plan on coming to stay again in the near future and have found our special place to visit again and again. I highly recommend it to anyone. Ben & Tracey
