Make a self catering West Devon cottage or Dartmoor accommodation your home away from home

West Devon is dominated by the beautiful Dartmoor National Park, which covers some 950 square miles of beautiful granite moors, where wildlife abounds and the tors provide an enchanting scene. The Dartmoor National Park is one of the UK's favourite destinations, attracting huge numbers of nature lovers, historians and walkers each year to explore the wild and windswept moors.

Things to do in West Devon and Dartmoor

There is no end of possibilities for entertainment from self catering Dartmoor accommodation. The whole of the Dartmoor National Park is carved with walking, cycling and riding routes, which deliver you to some of Dartmoor’s most famous archaeological sites and attractions, as well as some of the more secluded, timeless Dartmoor cottages which are found deep within the Dartmoor National Park. Anyone with a mind for mythology and legend will be delighted by a Dartmoor holiday cottage, as the whole area is simply steeped in folklore. The Drewerstone, Branscombe Loaf and Cheese and Fitz’ Well are among the most impressive folklore sites, but stories of ghost legions and tales from deep in the mines mean that there is no shortage of interest from Dartmoor holiday lets.

Dartmoor cottages are a fisherman’s favourite too. West Devon is inundated with spots for fishing, whether you prefer river, reservoir or sea fishing, fly or coarse. Trout and salmon are the most common fish caught from Dartmoor accommodation, and permits are available from South West Lakes Trust.

There are also more than 10 exemplary golf courses in the area. Whatever standard of golfer you are, West Devon is an excellent region to take holiday accommodation. The beautiful mooreland scenery makes perfect golf courses, and the views are quite exceptional from the majority of fairways in the area.

If your feet are tired from all the walking on Dartmoor or the Dartmoor hiking, there is another way to see the region. The rivers that have carved the granite tors of Dartmoor are great fun on which to canoe. Another great way to discover more of the region from a Dartmoor cottage is to go letterboxing. Letterboxing is a traditional sport on Dartmoor, which is a type of orienteering, with small letterboxes stashed among the crags and holes or under boulders.

Places to visit on holiday in West Devon and Dartmoor

Anyone wishing to play golf or walk on Dartmoor National Park would be perfectly placed from a holiday rental cottage in Tavistock. Surrounded by moor, woodland and river landscapes, Tavistock oozes rural charm, and if you are on holiday with your dog, everyone will be blissfully happy!

Sitting on the northern edge of the Dartmoor National Park is Sampford Courtney, one of Devon’s most charming villages. Having changed little since the middle ages, Sampford Courtney could not be more peaceful or charming.

Great chilled out two weeks at the lovely converted barn

5 of 5
Had a great two weeks at the barn. Deborah and Steve were great hosts. Very welcoming and answered any questions that we had. Had a minor issue with the hot water but that got resolved very quickly. The barn has been very well converted to a high standard. The kitchen is well stocked and the lounge very comfortable. The bedrooms and beds are also comfy. The barn is in a quiet but beautiful part of Devon with Bude a 25 min drive away. If its quiet and relaxing your after then this is the place

Delightful cottage, lovely garden, wonderful setting

5 of 5
The photos simply did not do the property justice. The cottage is extremely pretty and had everything we needed. The garden is secluded and a sun trap. We had a lovely time and could not have wished for a more suitable place. Wonderful walking was just round the corner along the Stitches and then to the cliff paths with stunning views and dramatic cliffs. The local garage was stocked with all we needed and Boscastle was a delight. The neighbours were immensely friendly and at the end of our holiday I really did not want to come home - that's a first for quite a while!
