  • A magical week in an incredible house

My family and I (6 adults, one small child) absolutely loved Newman House. It’s large, beautiful, filled with lovely objects which have clearly belonged to generations of the same family. The rooms are large and have fantastic views. You can see and hear the waves from the whole front of the house. It’s extremely peaceful, without being a long walk from the town, just about five minutes to the quay, if you’re fit. (There is a short section which is steeply uphill.) We felt we were in the most important house on the island - it was quite something to be able to see the house from the ferry or a sailing boat. The bedrooms were nice, there is the best equipped kitchen you can imagine for a holiday house. There are so many interesting books (don’t bother lugging your own out there). We really liked meeting Helena, the owner of the house, who now lives next door. She was so sweet and kind. I don’t think I’d ever want to go on holiday anywhere else ever again! NB I found the house’s age and beauty very charming. It’s very comfortable (and clean), but it isn’t slick and modern. Things aren’t all new. It’s not like being in a fancy hotel, it’s like being in a family’s charming, somewhat quirky home, in the most fantastic spot imaginable. If you’re anything like we are (and all sensible people), you will love it.
