Discover Welsh history and culture with Hay on Wye holiday cottages

Hay on Wye is a Welsh market town based in Brecknockshire. It sits on the River Wye and is at the north-easternmost tip of the Brecon Beacon National Park. Steeped in a rich history which can be traced back almost 1,000 years to 1135AD, the town is home to two castles and is famed for the Hay Literary Festival which takes place annually attracting some 8,000 visitors.

HomeAway has a large selection of holiday cottages in Hay on Wye. Guests travelling in groups of family or friends can look forward to private gardens equipped with BBQ facilities. Wooden floors, thick carpets and sumptuous bed linen are all staples of the many cottages and holiday apartments in Hay on Wye and the idyllic setting is ideal for both a romantic or eco tourism escape.

Lying at the entrance to the Brecon Beacon National Park, a holiday apartment in Hay on Wye makes an ideal base for a variety of outdoor pursuits. It is however at least an hours drive from the coast, so beach lovers may want to consider a seaside cottage in the traditional setting of Llandudno, or alternatively a chic city break in one of the many holiday homes in the urban retreat of Cardiff.

Things to Do

Shopping: For many years, Hay on Wye has been considered a hub for bibliophiles. It is the home of several new and used book shops, and many of these have been in existence for decades. Authors from around the world recognise Hay on Wye as being a focal point for their craft and it is not unusual to drop upon a signing or reading from a bestselling author.

Horse Riding: The Brecon Beacons make a marvellous location for hacking and riding as the result of the changing and unconventional landscape. As a result, there are many riding clubs, hire shops and trekking leaders within easy reach of the holiday cottages in Hay on Wye, where novices and experienced riders alike can find the perfect pony, equipment and route for their needs.

Canoeing: The location of the town, sitting on the River Wye, makes it the ideal location for canoeing, and many visitors are attracted to the area purely for this purpose. The river has a number of areas of faster current where experienced boatpeople might challenge their skills, but also some serene areas offering the ideal setting for novices too.

Fishing: In addition to the watersports which take place on the River Wye, the river is an excellent spot for angling. In fact, one of the largest pikes on record (a huge 39lb specimen) was caught in Hay on Wye. Local fishing tackle shops can supply rods, nets and bait in addition to expert advice on peaceful spots to seek out a bite.

Stargazing: The Brecon Beacons have been officially named as a ‘Dark Star Reserve’ as the limited light pollution makes them the ideal location for astronomy and star gazing. If the conditions are right, a visitor might happen upon an event such as a comet passing or a planetary movement.

Weather

Visitors to the area may need to pack protective clothing for a variety of weather conditions as Welsh weather is known for being temperamental. Temperatures can fluctuate between averages of 10-20°C in the summer months, falling to as little as 1°C during the winter. Whilst the rest of the UK enjoys an average monthly rainfall of 49mm, Hay on Wye can expect up to 75mm a month, with December and January statistically being the wettest months of the year.

Travel

Although the main travel into Hay on Wye tends to be by car, it is also extremely accessible by bus and train. The easiest way to drive into the town is by following the Severn Bridge to Newport, and then taking the A40 to Abergavenny. Fabulous House

4 of 5
Fabulous clean house in a great location, just what we wanted.Very comfortable lounge, the best we have ever experienced. Very well equiped in the kitchen. The rayburn was a real bonus to dry wet clothes and boots on the rack above.

Beautiful property and surroundings. Clean and relaxing.

5 of 5
This property is quaint, comfortable, clean and cosy. We had a lovely 2-night stay but wished we could've stayed longer to explore the surrounding areas much more. The woods behind the property were perfect for walking the dogs who enjoyed exploring. Marilyn and Peter were very hospitable and were around if we needed them. The property was well stocked everything we needed. Plentiful numbers of birds adorned the balcony, feeding throughout the day, making this property feel like a world away from city life. We would love to come back and enjoy a long weekend.
