Make a holiday cottage in Halwell your home away from home

Enveloped by the beauty of the South Hams, Halwell is an idyllic village offering the peace and tranquillity holidaymakers seek when they head to sunny Devon. As a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Halwell and neighbouring Morleigh sit at the centre of a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Scenic moorland, rivers, and stunning coastline are all within an arm's reach here, in addition to charming gastropubs, historic sites, and a wealth of annual events and festivals.

HomeAway has a lovely selection of holiday cottages in Halwell to suit couples, families, and groups. Halwell holiday cottages are priced from around £300 per week, and range from two to eight bedrooms. All come well appointed with everything a visitor needs for a comfortable stay. Most options come with convenient amenities such as internet access, a spacious garden, and DVD player. Families with pets will be happy to know that many of the cottages are also pet friendly.

Things to do

-Outdoor activities: Few places in the UK offer as much in terms of outdoor beauty as the South Hams. The area is an ideal place to take walks, as moorland gives way to trickling brooks and rivers. Along with rambling, visitors staying in Halwell holiday accommodation can partake in canoeing, sailing, and horse riding.

-Golf: The Dartmouth Golf & Country Club is less than four miles from the centre of Halwell. Open year-round, the well-rated club welcomes visitors and is home to beautiful fairways across two separate golf courses, including one par 72 Championship course. Non-golfers can enjoy a visit to the club’s spa for a treatment session.

-Food and drink: There are numerous pubs serving traditional home-cooked food in and around Halwell. Many inland pubs feature locally grown produce and are dog friendly. Closer to the coast in Dartmouth and Salcombe, holidaymakers can enjoy fresh local seafood. Tea rooms are another great place to sample the food made from local ingredients, including Devonshire’s famous clotted cream.

-Culture: There are many places of cultural interest in the vicinity of Halwell. Starting in Halwell itself, the local village church and churchyard are a pleasure to visit and appear as if they have been frozen in time. A little further up the road in Totnes, Totnes castle is a must-visit for any history buff. It is one of the best representations of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle and still stands proudly over the town.

-Beaches: Though Halwell is located inland, it still offers relatively easy access to the beaches of the South Hams. The seaside town of Salcombe and its beautiful beach are about a 30-minute drive away. Summer visitors keen to enjoy the beach may want to consider a holiday cottage in Salcombe to be closer to the water.

Weather in Halwell

Halwell can be enjoyed year-round; some families even choose to rent a Halwell holiday cottage for the winter festive season. Temperatures in the South Hams are mild, peaking at 20°C in July and August, and dropping to a low of 5°C in the winter. Rain is heavier in the winter than in the summer, but falls steadily throughout the year.

Travel to Halwell

Given its small size, Halwell is best reached by car. The village is located right along the A381, about 30 miles south of Exeter. From London, the drive to Halwell takes just under four hours. The closest rail station to Halwell is in Totnes.

Lovely House with Fantastic Sea Views

5 of 5
This is a large well equipped house, suited to families of any age, ours ranged from 1 to 70+ Our host Tony was very friendly, offering information on the local area. The views from most of the rooms were amazing, and eating breakfast looking out to sea was something special. The children particularly liked their own space in the attic room which was well equipped with toys and books. We all enjoyed using the spa pool and was especially good when the rain never stopped one day. We didn't use the gym and felt the space may have been better used for a pool or table tennis table. We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Tudor Lodge and would highly recommend for a great family holiday in Dawlish
