Make a holiday cottage in Hallsands your home away from home

The Devon village of Hallsands has spectacular sea views, is close to the old market town of Kingsbridge, and is just a short walk from pretty Beesands. In 1917, the original fishing village could no longer withstand severe storms due to earlier dredging, and it soon fell into the sea. Today, a safe platform is used to view this old ‘ghost’ town, but it's not – needless to say – where holidaymakers will be staying during their break! Rentals are located in the new village, which although has been built higher up, retains the character of the old remains. Just a few of the reasons this location is in such high demand are its beaches, cycling route, nearby island and quirky Hallsands holiday cottages.

Holiday cottages at Hallsands are a mix of the modern and historical. All are refurbished and decorated to the highest standard, particularly the Victorian houses which boast amenities and finishes to satisfy even the most discerning visitor. Weekly prices generally range from £284 to £600, but if guests really want to splash out, a large, top-end cottage may cost in excess of £1200. Amenities like Wi-Fi, Blue-ray players, iPod docks, gardens, BBQ areas and pet friendliness are featured in select properties. Sleeping as little as two or as many as eight, they also offer good value when compared to holiday homes in Salcombe, for example.

Things to do

-Scenic attractions: The walk across Bigbury-on-Sea Beach is a unique experience. When the tide is in, a one-of-a-kind tractor on stilts transports visitors to Burgh Island. The high point of the island is easily reached on foot and offers spectacular views of the Devon coastline. The island is home to the renowned Art Deco architecture of the Burgh Hotel. The island has been the backdrop for a number of novels by Agatha Christie.

-Beaches: Hallsands and the nearby Beesands (where Keith Richards and Mick Jagger made their very first public appearance at the still existing Cricket Inn) are beautiful shingle beaches. HomeAway also lists holiday accommodation in Beesands for those wishing to be right at the sea. Other nearby beaches to Hallsands holiday cottages include sandy Bantham Beach which is connected to Bigbury-on-Sea Beach and is popular with families, surfers and kayakers.

-Museums: The Overbeck’s Garden and Museum at Salcombe carries the name of its founder, Otto Overbeck. It appeals to both adults and children as it includes maritime displays, children’s toys and natural history offering an intriguing day out. The upper garden is exotic and has a pathway to Bolt Head with splendid views of the estuary. The garden is managed by the National Trust.

-Outdoor activities: The best way to stay close to the landscape of colourful rural roads, bridleways and verdant country lanes is the cycling route at Kingsbridge. Some effort is necessary as the terrain is varied, but the 12-mile route is generally circular and peaceful. There may be muddy patches in wet weather but going back to the comfort of a holiday home in Hallsands will make the cycle tour more bearable!

Weather in Hallsands

October and November experience breezy to gale force winds while April is the wettest month. July and August are the hottest months (13?C - 20?C). Generally, the climate is mild so Hallsands is a popular destination all year round.

Travel to Hallsands

The rural location of Hallsands holiday cottages means driving is the best option, although there is the Coleridge Community Bus that runs on Fridays. The best route is to head for Plymouth and then follow local roads. The nearest train stations are at Ivybridge and Totnes.
