Golant near Fowey – Cornwall

Golant's location makes it ideally situated for touring the south and north coasts, as well as wonderful places to visit and numerous pubs and restaurants for food and drink. Close by are golden sandy beaches, coves to explore, scenic coastal paths to walk, beautiful Cornish gardens, gastronomic restaurants, National Trust properties, quaint fishing villages, river trips, surfing, riding stables, boutique shopping, castles, steam railways, cycling, fly fishing, sailing, ample golf courses and the famed Eden Project just 10 minutes away.

Golant has around 120 dwellings with a population of circa 220 people. There is an excellent riverside pub (Fisherman's Arms) to enjoy lunch or dinner or a quiet drink as the river ebbs & flows. Or bring your boat as there are facilities for boat launching. The village offers an Art gallery displaying local artists work. The Saints Way Path is located in the village of Golant which provides spectacular scenery for walks along the river Fowey and leads to all the coastal paths. Along the path you will find a 13th century Parish Church dedicated to St Sampson.

Golant offers wonderful opportunities for sailing, boating, walking, hiking and nature enthusiasts. It is only 3 miles from the picturesque harbour town of Fowey, which can be reached by road (3 miles) or by boat (2 miles) along the beautiful River Fowey. The well known books "Tales of the Riverbank" & "The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Graham were scribed by inspiration of a scenic boating trip from Fowey to Golant. Today you can take the same breathtaking trip from Fowey to Golant then onto Lerryn. Self drive hire boats, sailing, sea fishing, canoeing can all be arranged from the Town Quay at Fowey.

Golant is known for its river birds and is home to cormorants, egrets, mallards, swans, Canada geese, kingfishers and herons. Take a scenic river trip and see the wildlife or Daphne du Mauriers home, which is a mile down river from the village.

Beaches, sand castles and damming streams are a child's dream with Readymoney cove, Polkerris, Par Sands, Charlestown and Porthpean beaches, to name but a few, within the local area. Sunsets and stormy seas are spectacular. The stunning coast line is the finest in Cornwall, with numerous paths for walkers; or you can just stroll along the cliff tops with your binoculars for some bird watching.

If you’re lucky you might see a train that runs parallel to the river transporting cargoes of china clay to the waiting ships on the quays at Fowey.

Today most places are touched by the commercial world, yet Golant remains beautiful, quaint and antiqued to ensure and offer escapism.

No issues for the facilites, except needing the manual to use the cooker and m.wave! (but we re not technical bods- so personal issue there). Used the oven but didn't use the microwave. Nice to have adequate pans to cook with as we do nt eat out often when on holiday. Ideal for two or two and a baby toddler. Nice to be in the village community. Bathroom lovely en-suite to bedroom.

Hi Paul and Yvette, Sorry for the late review, as i thought i had sent one, must have done something wrong. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for a truly wonderful stay in your magnificent house. Your property was far and away above my expectations, with so much room for our party of seven plus dog . We hope we left your home in the same condition as when we arrived. Now for an honest review - Upon arrival of the property we were amazed at the size of the house, it looked bigger than in the photos, once inside wow! All the rooms were of great proportions, the kitchen is large and very practical with appliances galore including dishwasher, fancy microwave, built in fridge and freezer basically everything you need, the cream teas were a nice touch Thank you. The utility room also included a self dispensing washing machine and is a great room for housing the dog cage. To finish downstairs their is a large conservatory with lovely views over the local countryside, a dining room off the kitchen with large family dinning table and finally a comfortable lounge with sofas and smart t.v etc etc. Upstairs continues with the same wow factor, with four double bedrooms, two with large en-suits and one bedroom with two singles. To finish off upstairs there is a large family bathroom including roll top bath and shower enclosure. The garden is huge, with decking area accessed from the utility including rattan dinning table and chairs, my only negative comment would be that the garden is unsecured, so dog owners be mindful. Par is a very good base for exploring the beautiful county of Cornwall. It has a chip shop, Chinese take away, Italian restaurant with views over the bay and the Ship Inn also deserves a mention with some great special boards, their are also convenient stores within easy reach. The Market every Saturday, Sunday and Wednesdays is worth a visit and is only 5 minutes away by car. Our family feel very privileged to have holidayed at this lovely large property and we would highly recommend to anyone without hesitation. Thanks Steve Robinson and Family
