Things to do in Glastonbury

Glastonbury was once an island in the reed swamps that covered the entire Mendip District. Today, it sits high above the plains of the Somerset Levels.

- Glastonbury Tor is the highest point of Glastonbury, and it is not difficult to see its islander roots as it rises above the fields. From the summit of the Tor the views of the surrounding areas are spectacular, and the Tor is a popular tourist attraction. The Chalice Well, a natural spring, flows from the foot of the Tor.

- Myths and Legend: The town of Glastonbury is entrenched in New Age culture due to its connection with the legendary King Arthur, the Holy Grail and Joseph of Arimathea. The graves of King Arthur and Guinevere were said to be in the grounds of the Lady Chapel of Glastonbury Abbey , and Joseph of Arimathea allegedly brought Jesus to Glastonbury as a child, returning with a cup of his blood (the Holy Grail) after his death.

-Glastonbury Abbey:, as well as having incredible architecture, is supposedly the location of the Holy Grail. Historians date the Abbey to the 7th century, however many believe that it was built in the 1st century in order to house the Holy Grail. Regardless of its true date, it is the oldest Christian church built above ground in the world and can be seen from your Glastonbury rental accommodation, as well as being well worth a close up visit.

- Shopping:: The town centre is a short distance from your holiday cottage in Glastonbury. At its heart is the octagonal market cross where the main streets of the town converge. Here you can sample the delights of the town’s cafes and independent shops, as well as the market, which is held every Tuesday, and the farmer’s market, which is held on the 4th Saturday of every month.

- Festival:: The name Glastonbury is inextricably linked with the Glastonbury Festival. Since it first began in 1970, it has grown to become the pinnacle of British music festivals. If you want to visit the area at the end of June, it is wise to book your holiday farmhouse accommodation in Glastonbury well in advance as the festival attracts tens of thousands of revellers to the area. The festival has music stages, theatres, cinema tents, children’s areas and relaxation zones, and is a major event on the New Age calendar.

All was exactly as expected, sparkling clean and well provided with everything needed for comfort, cooking etc. Judy and Paul are very pleasant and helpful and the property is warm and cosy. We would return again if visiting the area again.

We stayed for a week in August with two grandchildren and a dog. The cottage was small but perfectly formed! We particularly enjoyed Cheddar the caves are well worth a visit. Also went to Glastonbury, Wells, Burnham, Weston super Mare and the Clarks Village, plenty to see and do and loads of walks for the dog! The owners are on site and are very helpful and obliging - highly recommend this cottage.
