The town of Fort William offers plenty of amenities for holidaymakers, including a lovely pedestrianised high street filled with excellent restaurants and shops. Just outside of town are mountains, lochs, rivers, and a whole lot more for outdoor enthusiasts to explore. Things to do

-Museums: The West Highland Museum is situated in central Fort William, right in the heart of town. It’s a fascinating destination that has numerous exhibits covering the Jacobite Cause, how life in the Scottish Highlands has evolved over the centuries, Scottish military history, and much more. The museum is just a short drive away from holiday homes in Fort William and is open daily from Monday through Saturday.

-Natural attractions: The Nevis Range can be found just outside of Fort William and is the region’s main attraction. The town sits right at the base, but keen hikers will want to visit the top. At 4,406 feet, Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the British Isles. The Nevis Range is home to a wealth of hiking and sightseeing opportunities. Guided tours and other excursions are widely available and cater to many different fitness levels.

-Historical attractions: Inverlochy Castle is a short drive away from holiday cottages in Fort William. Originally built in the 13th century, the castle played an integral role in the first and second battles of Inverlochy. As a result it is considered one of Scotland’s most important castles. It remained intact until the 17th century when it was abandoned in favour of a fort further down the river. This fort eventually developed into modern-day Fort William. Though Inverlochy Castle is in ruins today, it is unique in that it has remained relatively unchanged since it was first constructed nearly 800 years ago.

-Family attractions: The Jacobite Steam Train is a vintage steam engine that takes passengers on an 84-mile round-trip journey from Fort William to the fishing village of Mallaig and back. The route begins under the shadow of Ben Nevis and winds its way through 19th-century villages and remarkable geographic features. The train runs twice daily from mid-May until late-October and is one of the most relaxing ways to take in the scenery of the Highlands.

-Outdoor pursuits: The Great Glen Way is a popular walking and cycle path between Fort William and Inverness. The path is 65 miles long and passes Loch Lochy, Fort Augustus, and Loch Ness en route to Inverness. As one of Scotland’s most famous hiking trails, detailed information is available regarding each leg of the trail. Generally speaking, the first half of The Great Glen Way is fairly flat and suitable for novice hikers and cyclists. The terrain gets progressively more challenging past Fort Augustus and into Inverness.

Weather in Fort William

Rain is the predominant characteristic of Fort William's weather. The annual rainfall average is roughly 1900mm; more than triple the amount London receives! May and June are the driest and two of the warmest months to visit, but bring a raincoat and any time of the year will do. Temperatures peek at 18°C from June through August and cool considerably from there. Winters are very wet and cold: sub-zero temperatures and snowfall are not uncommon.

Travel to Fort William

They might be remote, but getting to holiday cottages in Fort William is a fairly straightforward affair. Many visitors choose to fly to either Glasgow (a three hour-drive away) or Inverness airport (a 90-minute drive away) and hire a car. It’s also possible to reach the town by train. Direct overnight sleeper trains are available from London. Trains also depart Glasgow for Fort William several times daily.

Review of No. 10 Ardrhu Cottage Onich

5 of 5
The cottage was easy to find and when we arrived the setting was stunning. The cottage was very clean and tidy and had all that you would expect from a holiday cottage and more with those fantastic views over Loch Linnhe. Joanne and Adrian were very welcoming. The location was an ideal base to explore The Isle of Mull and the Isle of Skye as well as trips to Mallaig, Fort William and Oban. We will definitely have another stay at this cottage and would highly recommend it to anyone thinking about holidaying in this area. Barty & Tracy Barnsley South Yorkshire
