Make a holiday cottage in Devon your home away from home

Devon is a traditional UK holiday destination lined with sunny beaches on its north and south borders, and filled with beautiful countryside in between. Holiday homes in Exeter are in the largest city in the county, a hub for cultural and historic sites. The stunning Dartmoor National Park and the majority of Exmoor National Park also lie within the border of Devon, attracting outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers from across the UK, and holiday homes in Torbay take advantage of the gorgeous English Riviera. A wealth of fun family attractions and a long list of golf courses round out the region, making it an attractive spot for all kinds of holidaymakers.

Whether it’s exploring the countryside or hitting the beach visitors dream of, HomeAway has a diverse range of holiday cottages in Devon located near a whole host of attractions. Catering to visitors of all budgets, small cottages start at under £150 per week, whilst luxury holiday accommodation can be booked for upwards of £1,000 per week. Regardless of the price, all holiday cottages in Devon come fully furnished, with select accommodation offering added amenities like tennis courts, swimming pools, and internet access.

Things to do

-Beaches: Devon benefits from beaches on two coasts. In North Devon, visitors will find a number of spots that are well suited for surfing, concentrated between Bideford and Ilfracombe, particularly at Croyde Bay. The north coast is also home to two family-friendly Blue Flag beaches: Westward Ho! and Tunnels Beach. In South Devon, some of the top beaches for families and watersports are at Bantham, Dawlish, Teignmouth and – of course – all around Torbay.

-Outdoor activities: Temperate weather makes outdoor adventures possible for most of the year in Devon. Dartmoor National Park is an excellent hub for outdoor activities, with numerous country roads and trails for walking, cycling, and horse riding. Dartmoor is also popular with rock climbers and kayakers. Visitors staying in a Devon holiday cottage closer to the coast can also enjoy the beauty of the South West Coast Path.

-Family attractions: Families choosing to stay in Devon holiday homes up north can visit the Milky Way Adventure Park, which has lots of theme park rides and play areas for children of all ages. The Crealy Great Adventure Park offers similar attractions and is located closer to Exeter in East Devon. Over in Combe Martin, the Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park is yet another great place for kids offering a multitude of animal encounter experiences.

-Golf: Located on the north coast of Devon near Barnstaple, Saunton Golf Club has the highest rated golf course in Devon. Its East Golf Course offers 18 challenging holes over varied terrain. The course at the Royal North Devon Golf Club, just north of Bideford, is one of the oldest outside of Scotland and is unique in that sheep and horses frequent the course. East Devon Golf Club near Exeter also has a highly rated course that is a convenient drive from the city.

Weather in Devon

Devon covers a rather large area, but weather in the county can generally be characterised as temperate. Temperatures along the coast are milder and vary more further inland. July and August are typically the warmest months, when high temperatures near 20°C are not uncommon. Spring and the rest of summer see moderate amounts of rain. Along the coast, winters are mild and rainy. Frost is common further inland, though snow is uncommon.

Travel to Devon

The easiest way to reach Devon is by car. Drivers can take the M5 straight to Exeter. From there, a series of A-roads cover much of the rest of the county. It is also possible to take the train into Exeter or to several other major towns in Devon. One final option is to fly into Exeter International Airport and hire a car from there.

Something to tantalise everybody's taste buds!

5 of 5
We arrived at The Shippen, after a very long drive, to lovely scones, jam and clotted cream that had been left for us by the owners Janice and Jon! The accommodation was first class, clean and well-kept with everything you needed for your holiday but it was its surrounding reserve that we were really looking forward to, the woodland, meadows, river and pond. As the weather was very hot everything looked a bit dry but having an interest in all fauna and flora that didn’t deter us walking through the meadows in the mornings to see which butterflies, moths and other insects were around. We were lucky enough to spot the first 2018 silver-washed fritillary on our second day there – not in the meadow however - it nearly flew in through our French doors! The woodland is lovely and it has many accessible pathways, some running along the edge of the river that runs through the reserve. We managed to see the kingfisher as it darted past and an amazing number of demoiselles, damselflies and dragonflies but unfortunately were not able to see the elusive otter that frequents the area. On the other edge of the woodland is an old disused railway line which you can walk along, with a couple of stone bridges still arching over it. The highlights of our holiday was my husband’s first encounter with a glow-worm, kindly found by Jon’s sister and the opportunity to experience seeing the bats emerging from The Shippen and Jon’s property - that was fantastic. The variety and number of birds that came to the feeders in the garden was brilliant and they didn’t seem to mind if you were sat outside. The Shippen is such a comfy cottage and the reserve is an oasis for everyone to enjoy, whether it’s the wildlife you’re looking for or just a place to rest, relax and recuperate. Jon and Janice will make you welcome and are happy to help you enjoy the best the reserve can offer with their enthusiasm for everything ‘wild and wonderful’.

A spacious well equipped spotlessly clean apartment within walking distance of beach .

5 of 5
We received a warm welcome from the owner on arrival who left us with a very generous welcome pack of groceries. The apartment was clean light and spacious and had everything we needed even beach towels and bathrobes. The furnishings and fittings were all high quality .The view of the sunset from the balcony was an added bonus. We have stayed in many places in North Devon and this was by far the best and we will definitely be booking this again.
