Make a holiday rental home or cottage in Dawlish, Devon your home away from home

Dawlish is a town on the south coast of Devon and twelve miles from the City of Exeter. The railway route from Plymouth to Exeter is one of the most spectacular coastal routes passing through Totnes, Newton Abbot, Dawlish Warren and Teignmouth. Dawlish is situated at the outlet of Dawlish Water and has conspicuous Permian red sandstone cliffs fronted by Dawlish sands.

Places to holiday in Dawlish

Dawlish is one of South Devon’s much-loved holiday destinations boasting an award winning beach and five hundred-acre Nature Reserve, which takes in the Exe Estuary. Naturally this means that there is a vast choice in holiday accommodation including holiday park, bed and breakfast (b&b), caravan park, camping and self catering.

However the best type of accommodation to see all that Devon has on offer is to rent a self-catering holiday cottage. Cottages are like having a home away from home and you don't have to worry about set meal times or vacating your room by 10am. Dawlish has narrow streets, welcoming tearooms, impressive villas, bustling shops and comfortable seaside cottages.

Dawlish local produce markets are held monthly on the Lawn and Dawlish has several clubs open to visitors such as the Camera Club, the Dawlish Art Group and the Teignmouth and Dawlish Ramblers Association who have weekly short and long walks along the coastal path, Dartmoor, the river and through fields.

Things to do in Dawlish

Dawlish has a number of attractions for those interested in the usual seaside resort type of entertainment and the two main amusement arcades have the latest gambling machines and video games. There is a miniature fairground with Grand Prix go-kart racing, dodgems and slides. The Sun Burnt Arms offers a peaceful public house atmosphere with beer, excellent food and an enormous garden. Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve has a visitor centre accessible from the promenade and a range of birds, wildlife and rare flora.

Ashcombe Adventure Centre is set in more than two thousand acres of countryside and hosts a range of activities including paintball, archery, shooting and fishing and a variety of games include Mission Impossible, Hostage Rescue, Bunker Attack, Crashed Plane and VIP. The Dawlish Museum collection is at Knowle House and includes collections of nature sciences, crafts, local industries, Victoriana and war.

Powderham Castle is one of England's well-known stately homes and it is situated in a beautiful deer park alongside the River Exe and holds many live events such as concerts by Busted, Westlife and Elton John. The Paignton Steam Railway runs along the Torbay coast to Kingswear past the River Dart, Britannia Royal Naval College, the Butterwalk, Bayard’s Cove and on to Dartmouth Castle. Other attractions not to be missed include Babbacombe Model Village, Paignton Zoo, Buckfast Abbey and the House of Marbles.

Weather in Dawlish

Dawlish is known for it's mild climate and the numerous sub-tropical plants growing in the surrounding gardens confirm this.

Travel to Dawlish

Exeter and Plymouth airports serve Dawlish and National Express coaches have a direct service. Dawlish railway station is situated in the centre of the town next to the beach and buses operating in the district include Devon General, Tavistock CT and Dawlish Coaches.

We had good weather and used the local no2 'bus to Dawlish town gardens and river. Another day we walked to the beach via footpath and bridge over railway and then on to Dawlish and returned on 'bus. Another day we went by 'bus to Starcross then ferry to Exmouth returning by train, and lots of other things. Good facilities in kitchen so we always cooked our evening meal, lots of very hot water for the washing up. Kitchen tap a little stiff but quite manageable. Best short break we have had for a long time.

We've just come back from a 2 week stay at the Watchouse, and to be honest we could have stayed for another 2 weeks! It's the most perfect place we've ever stayed at in the UK. A proper home from home in every way. The location is sublime with ever changing views which we never got tired of.The icing on the cake though, was we saw a pod of dolphins on 2 different days, absolutely amazing. we're already planning our next visit to this magical place and can't wait to come back.
