Make a holiday cottage in Dartmoor your home away from home

Dartmoor National Park is a region of Devon that is characterised by unspoilt moorland, inviting villages, and wonderful historic sites. Covering nearly 1,000 square kilometres, the park is a major visitor attraction that is home to a seemingly endless range of possibilities. In addition to walking, hiking, and cycling, Dartmoor is also a popular venue for canoeing, rock climbing, and other adrenaline-fuelled activities.

HomeAway has a wide range of holiday cottages in Dartmoor available for visitors to book. Scattered across a number of lovely towns and villages, all accommodation comes fully furnished. Most Dartmoor holiday cottages have one, two, or three bedrooms, and start at well below £300 per week. Catering to all types of visitors, many cottages come with added amenities like access to tennis courts, internet connectivity, and close proximity to popular walking trails. With holiday homes in Sticklepath, Moretonhampstead, Lydford and more, visitors can choose to be in middle of the wilds of Dartmoor, or on its fringes.

Things to do

-Outdoor activities: Walks in Dartmoor range from easy, family-friendly strolls, to challenging treks through varied landscapes. Guided linear and circular walks are offered in the warmer months, with a variety of trails accessible from many holiday cottages in Dartmoor. Cycling, both on and off road, is another popular outdoor activity in the region, as is horse riding. Dartmoor is also a haven for adventure sport. Kayak and canoe fans can take to the River Dart, whilst rock climbers have their choice between a number of prominent sites.

-Historic sites: Sticklepath is home to the Finch Foundry, the last water-powered forge in England. The historic foundry is open year-round with demonstrations held each hour. Over in Buckfastleigh is Buckfast Abbey, which holds many works of art and contains three separate shops selling unique products related to the abbey. Buckland Abbey is not far away and is also an interesting historic site to visit. The former Cistercian monastery is also the former home of Sir Francis Drake.

-Family attractions: Kids will love a trip to the Miniature Pony Centre in Moretonhampstead. There are several play areas on site, as well as the opportunity to groom ponies, feed ducks, and engage in a number of other farm activities. Voted the most beautiful place in Devon, Becky Falls Woodland Park is another great family day out option in Dartmoor. The park contains 50 acres full of family-friendly trails, lovely streams, and an interactive petting zoo.

-Food and drink: Historic pubs and restaurants are commonplace in Dartmoor. In the beautiful town of Tavistock, there is a 15th-century pub called the Peter Tavy Inn that is a must visit for any foodie. Visitors in holiday homes in Moretonhampstead and the surrounds are close to Gidleigh Park in Chagford, a Michelin-starred restaurant that specialises in modern European cuisine.

Excellent, wish we could stay longer.

Tucked away in the quiet, pretty village of Cornworthy, is this beautiful, comfortable barn that is tastefully decorated and very well equipped. On arrival we received a bottle of delicious local wine and cake that made us feel very welcome. The bedrooms are spacious and the open plan kitchen and living area make it the perfect place to be on a rainy day with loads of games, puzzles, toys, DVD's, internet and TV to keep the whole family of all ages entertained. Bring your wellies to go for a walk down to the creek and then to the local pub for a very good plate of fish and chips. From here it is easy to explore the South Hams with so many hidden gems to be found. Cycling is maybe for the more adventurous on these hills, although we braved the ride from Totnes to Ashprington despite not having been on a bike for more than a year!
