Things to do in County Durham

The North Pennines are a huge attraction in County Durham. The huge swathes of wild countryside, carved by gushing streams and teeming with wildlife make County Durham and the North Pennines a hugely popular destination with walkers, hikers and mountain bikers looking to enjoy the wildest of English landscapes first hand. From the wild moors of Upper Teeside to the huge woodlands of the Castle Eden Dene National Park, there are always more routes to explore from self catering County Durham accommodation. England’s largest waterfall, High Force can also be found in the North Pennines, and makes for a wonderful picnic spot on a walking holiday.

The coastline is equally spectacular. The 11 miles Durham Coastal Path is a particular highlight, taking visitors along dramatic cliff tops, down to delightful little sand beaches and to some of County Durham’s most impressive historical sites. County Durham is awash with wonderfully well preserved historical sites, including Durham Cathedral, ‘the best cathedral on Earth’. There are monuments from the Saxon, Norman and medieval periods, including the dramatic Durham Castle, Raby Castle and Auckland Castle, all of which are well worth exploration from houses to rent in County Durham.

There are a huge range of days out available from County Durham properties. Sedgefield Racecourse offers a magnificent day of entertainment, and the evenings are a riot of music and fun throughout the county. Whether you are interested in a theatre, comedy, gourmet restaurants or top class musical events, you will be wonderfully entertained from any of the houses to rent in County Durham. The Beamish Mary Pub is especially renowned for its live music, especially folk, and there are annual Blues, Film and Comedy festivals to enjoy from County Durham accommodation too.

Comfortable cottage with a beautiful countryside view

4 of 5
This cottage had everything we needed. We were greeted by a very generous welcome pack. The cottage was clean and decorated tastefully and there was plenty of space for my four children to explore. The garden was also very nice and had a nice view of the countryside. We enjoyed staying in this cottage and would recommend to others. Thanks June.

Spotlessly clean, peaceful barn conversion 3 minutes drive from picturesque village of Sedgefield. Well equipped kitchen and some antique furniture. Lovely hosts who couldn't have been more helpful. Would stay again.
